Is this enough spending money for one week in New York City? |
Hi all,
Firstly sorry for posting yet another question about spending money in New York, but I've looked through as many of the existing questions and answers before posting this one!
I'm travelling out to New York on 28/08/2008 until 04/08/2008. I'll be staying at the HI Hostel on Amsterdam Avenue/W 104 st.
Before I leave I'm trying to think of anything I might need when I get there as I'm on a pretty small budget, so I don't plan to buy any electricals or anything expensive, just eat & drink and get about and see the City.
I'm planning on buying a 7 day unlimited Metrocard for $25 to get about but how much am I looking at for food? I'm more than happy to eat at Deli's etc for the week and buy food to cook in the Hostel.
It looks like I will be able to take around $700-800 with me for food, attractions and maybe some other bits and pieces.
What do you lot think?
Thanks alot. Additional Details Hi all, I've set the money for flights, transfers to/from airports, travelcard and hostels aside already. So I'll have at least $100 a day with me.
Although it is my birthday a few days before ;) |

You may want to come with a couple a hundred more. NYC is an expensive place. If you plan on getting prepared foods, buy them early in the day, lots of places adjust prices at dinner time. Bring your own toiletries. Do not take taxi's, use the subway or even better, walk. Get breakfast at local bakeries instead of places like Starbucks. Look for supermarkets in the area that have buffets. Pizza is abundant in NY and it's cheap. If you venture into the midtown Broadway area, watch for the tourist traps like bus tours and such. You can experience these things on foot at your own pace and you'll spend less money. Enjoy New York. I love it here.

If you're really into planning your way around the city. Go to a travel website and look up things to do in NYC. From there you can kind of get an idea of what you want to do and how much it will cost to do those things. |

although 700-800 should be enough for a week i always recommend you travel with at least 1000 since you never know what can happen, you always need extra emergency money |

I am not sure.New york City is VERY expensive. If you don't plan on eating out alot of buying alot then yes its enough but, otherwise you may need more. |

NYC is outrageously expensive for tourists, but not bad for natives. Except rents. Watch where the working people go, and avoid tourists. You have easily enough. |

If you really watch your money, that should be enough. As everyone else said, New York City is expensive...but if you're careful it's possible to not spend a lot. You just have to look in the right places.
Having enough money always helps, because you never know...so if you can save up even more, it would be good. |

New York is expensive! A burger, fries & Coke at McDonalds's will set you back about $8. In addition to prepaid round-trip plane ticket and the hostel fees (are you sure the quoted price includes all taxes?), you need to get from the airport to the hostel and back with your luggage, get the Metrocard, at least $30/day for food. There are admissions charges for all the museums, entertainment -- like a couple of drinks at a club can set you back $20-50. If you only have $100/day in addition to plane, hostel, Metrocard, you are in trouble and are really limiting yourself.
NYC has a great deal to offer, but you have priced yourself out of obtaining the best of the city -- no Broadway or off-Broadway show, no ballet, opera, concert, no interesting restaurants, clubs, World Cruise around Manhattan. Last I checked, it was $9 just to take the elevator to the Observation Deck of the Empire State Bldg. |

Yes it is enough, but sit down and determine further what you'll spend on food first and stay on budget.Breakfast burritos and hamburgers, deli sammies, and you may even be able to have a nice restaurant meal too. |

I was in Manhattan earlier this month and spent a lot more than that, but I usually ate in the Broadway district or Times Square where I'm sure food was more expensive. A sandwich at Stage Deli was $19.95 and ice tea was $3.50. Junior's was $28, Carmine's $40, John's Pizzeria $21, Stardust Diner $27, even Burger Joint was $12. However, the hot dogs from the street vendor weren't bad at all for $2.
The 1/2 price Broadway shows are $55+.
Empire State Building is $17
Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island is $14.
Top of the Rock is $18.
2 day pass for Hop on/off tour bus is $50
Bike taxi is $60
Harbor Cruise is $28
Honestly y'all, it was worth every cent. |

I think the amount of money you've set aside is good. There are cheap places to eat and drink- just depends on the area you go out in. There are other discounts too- TKTS for 50% off most Broadway shows the day of, for example. |

hello - $100 a day can do you well in ny if you really are here to site see and not eat at some of our great restaurants. I suggest that you look up the museums first to see when they might have free entry (a number of them do that one night a week), and plan accordingly if you are interested in seeing them. the location you are going to is actually a fun part of town, and you will be close to central park for lunch one day etc. if you are from Europe (your dates above make me think you may be) you will be surprised at how little our stuff costs compared to Europe. the euro and pound are very strong and you may be tempted to buy clothes etc here as well.
enjoy our town, its a great one. |

very reasonable amount! have fun and just keep track of where it goes - have a budget and stick to it you can make it all the way through; NY a day is anywhere from $20 to $2M a day ha ha |

Food is pretty expensive in NYC, and if you want to take in the sites you'll need a lot for cab fare. You'll need about $150 to take in a broadway show. You'll probably need at least $100 for prostitutes. And you'll want to have some extra cash for souvenirs.
I think you should bring a bit more. |

well attractions might be a bit expensive
and parking is a killer (but i see you're taking the subway =] )
