Nope. DC is its own little entity, or District, I suppose. It's not quite a state, but it's definitely part of the US, if that's what you're asking. |

No, it is a federal district.
It borders the State of Maryland. If you look at a map, you'll see that it also has borders with the State of Virginia.
It was established as a Federal District so that no one State would have the right to impose State rules upon the home of the Federal Government. |

No, it is on to itself, but it was carved out of Maryland |

Washington, DC is a seperate district and was set aside for the Nation's Capitol. It is not a state or part of a state.
It is the District of Columbia. The seat of our government is
there and it was the greatest town/city to grow up in, that you could imagine! My family moved there in 1930 when it was just a sleepy little country town. As a child I could travel from one end of town to the other alone, with no fear. It cost three cents for a school child to ride the streetcar or bus and the movies cost a dime! I've been back for visits, but little remains of that country town. But all the spectacular buildings and monuments remain. I hope you are able to visit there yourself someday. |

No, it is not. It is a federal district. The founders did this on purpose to prevent any state from imposing state laws on the nation's capital. It was founded in 1790 using land voluntarily ceded by Maryland and Virginia. The land from Virginia, however, has since been returned to Virginia, so the modern District of Columbia consists entirely of land that was once part of Maryland. |

Washington is the only city in the District of Columbia, previously a section of Maryland. The District of Columbia used to be divided equally between the borders of Virginia and Maryland hundreds of years ago, but Virginia withdrew its part of DC for its own reasons (now modern day Arlington County, VA). Georgetown, now a neighborhood in Washington, used to be a seperate city in Maryland but was incorperated into the City of Washington when the District of Columbia was established. Technically, Washington is NOT a state, it is a Federal District in the United States, and therefore does not have state rights like Virginia or Maryland have (like representation in Congress), but does have some level of autonomy and self government (like Puerto Rico and Guam). There have been proposals in the past to make DC a semi autonomus city in Maryland so that the District could have representation in Congress, but many of these plans failed or were turned down by congress. Washington, DC is an individual district within the United States, making it part of the union, but is not a state. |
