kudos to you. i couldn't have said it better myself! all we want is for peple to understand that we feel like we where left to find for ourselves. i was NOT in the city during katrina. i left the day before but alot of my family was still there and friends. my aunt was stuck working inside charity hospital with no food and very little to drink. the people were treid like animals. like they didn't deserve anything. and i can say for a fact that not everyone who was stuck in the city was poor, or on welfare or whatever. they had people just as well off as people who live in huge homes in LA, out there in the dome. i believe they city should have had a better than of evacutation. i cna home form school that friday, wel left that saturday, and katrina hit that monday. that last thing on my mind that friday was a hurricane comeing. me and my friends were planning what we where gonna do to hang out the next week. we taught the hurricane was going to florida then back out into the ocean just like everyone else did. i barley took any clothes with me caus ei taught oh we wll be back in a few days like any other time. katrina changed my life forever. never in a million years would i think i would be were i am now. but i think katrina was a way of tell some people to wake up and do something else with there lives. no matter what peoeple say they are not doing the same things they were before katrina. if they are then they learned nothing from this. i learned to appreicate my family and friends more. to stop being so selfish. i lost my faith in God there for a while before katrina and while some people lost there faith after katrina i got mine back. now i pray every night not just for myself family and friends but for everyone in the world that they will be safe and blessed. i don't get why people think we just want a hand out and goverment money. we just want what we were promised. insurance says they pay us if soemthing happens to our homes. well they lied. i know people havn't gotten a dime and payed there insurance faithfully for years. if they did get money they automaticlly had to pay off there morgage, which left them with little or nothing. they had no options. road home is like a road to no where i don't know anyone who got money from that, but just about everyone is waiting.

Not everyone hates you, but people (including many other black people) are increasingly frustrated that many black people refuse to educate themselves, and then blame that lack of education on whitey. You could at least hit the "check spelling" button conveniently provided by Yahoo!, yet, perversely, you did not. The most surefire way to remain in the ghetto, to ensure a derisive response from others, and to make sure your children remain in the ghetto, is to remain uneducated. Go to the library. Learn things. Don't attribute all injustice to racism. By the way, here's an excerpt from your question, corrected.

I don't hate the people that have suffered through Katrina. I couldn't care what "color" the people in New Orleans are or were at the time of Katrina. I cared that people were displaced from their homes. I certainly don't hate people that were victims of Katrina.
I am aware of how the insurance companies are trying to renege on the coverage you and others in New Orleans had. I certainly don't hate anyone who is waiting for funds to be able to rebuild.
One thing you might want to know is what was presented to people in other areas of the country. I am not far from NYC. What I saw on TV at the time were alot of people not doing a darn thing to help themselves get out of New Orleans but rather they were sitting on their butts complaining that the government didn't come and get them or didn't come get them fast enough for their liking.
My area gets alot of flooding at times - - the communities help eachother and people get out of their homes, they don't sit back and wait for the government to pick them up and take them to safety - they get up and get out (walking if necessary).
If I was poor and didn't have a car or money, I'd have packed my bags and be walking the opposite direction of the hurricane if I had to.
I think that what you perceive as people hating people in New Orleans is actually a backlash from what we saw on TV. Now I happen to know that is not representative of everyone in New Orleans, but some people take what they see on TV as gospel!

"Everyone" did not and does not say this. It is the lack of the attempt to help oneself that "everyone" does not like. That holds true for ALL people, red, yellow, black or white no matter where the disaster lies. It is the sitting around waiting for help because they think it is due. I don't mean just New Orleans and I don't believe for one second that the majority of their people were/are like that.

Unfortunately, Americans are fickle and at this point want to
"move on" to a new disaster. Sad, but true. Please don't try to make it a racial issue when that is not really the case.

It's like, for example, assuming that Detroit is bad because there are drugs and murders there. It is all mind games. It is the same with New Orleans. It is the perceptions people have of the over all picture of it. Detroit is not all bad nor are it's people. I am sure that New Orleans people for the most part are hard working and deserving. There's always a few that spoil it for everyone else.

Economically things are bad all over and blaming a city for this is ridiculous! Turn a deaf ear and do what you know is right and know that you DO deserve the help and hopefully will get it.

People are mostly judging the black race for the outrage that took place during and after katrina's devastation. I am a New Orleans resident , lived in the uptown area all of my life. I watched people die day to day waiting for help to come, never came. For me to sit and listen to media state that " blacks were poor ", " blacks were the renters" and all of this other crap pisses me off. I lived one block away from Magazine Street which is known as the " Garden District". I watched blacks and whites LOOT... food, stores, cars, breaking into houses near the St Charles Area.. you name it .

But as I said, everything was blamed mainly on blacks. I can care less what others may say or think about the black people of New Orleans. During a time like that , who wouldnt steal food or water? Come on lets be real about the matter. Electricity was off, No food because it was probably spoiled, No water, No air, Nothing . And yet we have people that want to judge. Put your selves in our position, then JUDGE.

I watched elderly people die in my apartment building on a daily basis. It was sad, the memories are haunting. Its something I dont want to experience ever again. People heard things on the News and read articles and BELIEVED IT. Truth is - some of it was RUMORS. Never Happened.

I joined the army , and I had just got home from training and AIT in June. 2 mths later , Katrina hit . As you stated, media and others stated that blacks were on gov. assistance, and lived in " poor areas". Its all bull sh*t, excuse my french. I ignore it. I know better so it doesnt bother me.
My mother was a single mother of 2 . NO gov. assistance, worked 2 damn jobs never asked for any hand outs. I joined the army in 2004, and my sis just joined this year . My mom is married, and owns her house in NEW ORLEANS.
Then people are making judgments saying what New Orleanians should have done . I just dont understand why is there so much hatred, and ignorance in this matter. A disaster that made history as the most devastation, and the most expensive . Katrina has changed many people lives, be it the evacuees, volunteers, EVERYONE. I admit Houston stepped up to the plate and let the evacuees come to the city . I admire the mayor Bill White a lot. But I see that Houston residents took a survey this year and said that they want the Evacuees to return to New Orleans. They stated that the evacuees are the reason for the high crime rate. Like I stated before, its so much hatred. Every one needs to open their eyes and realize that some people are still HOMELESS, still trying to rebuild their lives and move on, it will take a while. It may seem that 2 yrs is long enough, but honestly, It seems like a few months to me. Assistance is somewhat scarce, and if there is any going around many new orleanians dont know about it . Perfect example RED CROSS MEANS TO RECOVERY . There are so many people that were told that this program DIDNT exist. Yet this program is for HOME OWNERS only, or so I have heard. So much going on and I feel that the Government, the State of Louisiana, and The City Of New Orleans have failed. 2 years and seems like nothing has been accomplished. Wonder what Bush will announce today?

I always wonder if there was no IRAQ war...could we be sending relief and rebuild funds to New Orleans????

I think it's funny how people say they would walk if they didn't have the money to leave. Would you REALLY start walking from a storm that is moving faster than you can walk? Would you REALLY? I don't think so.

If these people actually KNEW what happened instead of lecturing about grammar and poor education, they would realize that a lot of people that stayed behind were the elderly. A lot of older people cannot drive due to poor eyesight, health issues, and therefore would not be able to walk. So let's just put that aside.

It's amazing how those that were born into a relatively good situation (good family or opportunity to go to a better school) so easily judge those in a completely different situation. People have obligations or things holding them back that are beyond their control.

You cannot judge until you've been in someone else's shoes. The local government was "whining for help" someone said.That's nice. Also very mature. They were asking for help because they KNEW they couldn't handle something this big on their own. The federal government had a fail proof plan ready right? OH WAIT! BUSH (in all his glory) hired someone with experience in raising horses to take care of emergency planning. He also denied help from other countries.

Why people hate New Orleans? It's the ignorance of never visiting a unique city. It's also a great way to judge our nation. How we treat those in need really says something about us. It's disgusting and sad.

I know personally I went to New Orleans to help my grandparents rebuild their house. I donated as much as I could to the Red Cross and also found water, clothes, etc to send over. I did what I felt was necessary and it's sad that others didn't help a little bit more. Not that I'm a saint or to be commended but it doesn't take a lot to help someone.

People would not understand until it happens to their city and they will feel differently. Our city lost everything and it's still not together yet. It's a damn shame!!! I live in Shreveport, La. with my family and I don't know if I will come back to New Orleans because of the conditions and who says if this might happen to us again!!! I thank God that my family was saved from the storm; but it depressed me so much to see my city go through such a terrible thing. No matter if I come back, New Orleans will always be a part of me and I'm proud to be part of the culture. People that don't like us are just " Haters drinking H A T E R A D E !!!!!

I agree, although I'm hispanic and my family comes from lower St. Bernard, well you know how people are stereotyped if they come from the parish lol. Anyways, the insurance problem wasn't that we didn't have any, it was that one company wouldn't pay because they blamed all the damage on water, and the other company wouldn't pay because they blamed all the damage on wind, now tell me how wind leaves water marks above my windows? The fact of the matter is that the government wasn't prepared for this kind of disaster and honestly neither were any of us. I mean the last hurricane to hit was Betsy and people sat around saying oh I survived Betsy, this one will be fine, but it wasn't and that's how it all happened.

i agree - it wasn't just blacks that lost everything. my cousin lives in new orleans and he lost everything he had. he did have insurance, but they didn't pay for hardly anything he is retired from the Navy and bought a house there 6 years ago. now his house is completely gutted, he doesn't have the money (even with the insurance - it barely paid for clean up) and he is living in a fema trailer with no idea when or even IF he will ever be able to live in his house again. i tried to convince him to move back her since i have a house he could live in, but he said he cna't afford to walk away from it all either. he really is in a sad state of affairs. he did evacuate, he was lucky enough to have someplace to go, he came back here to Illinois. put what he could in his car and drove. his stuff is still here, because he said his trailer has been broken into twice and he doesn't want to take any chances.

Nobody “hates” New Orleans or it’s residents.

Obviously you think playing the “race card” and/or “victim card” is somehow supposed to invoke sympathy. It’s way past time to use race as the issue, as one poster stated your “English” leaves allot to be desired. Lack of education is not a issue,, only an excuse for poor grammar and spelling.

“Money problems” is only an excuse for NOT leaving when everyone had the chance. No transportation?? Then WALK! Do whatever it takes to get yourself and loved ones out of harms way!

It’s not like you weren’t told to leave,, you choose not to, are living with the consequences of NOT leaving, and don’t like your decisions !!

I’m not from N.O.,, a completely different part of the Nation but what we were shown and told in the media was allot different than you may suspect.

Your local Government failed you miserably !! Your Mayor knew of the pending disaster yet he did little to NOTHING, besides whining N.O. needs more “help” before the flooding. Thousands of people knew the dangers and stayed anyway and don’t like the consequences of their choices!! Post flooding your Mayor still did little to nothing besides whine LOUDER that N.O. needs MORE HELP. He sounded like a “whiny where’s our entitlement guaranteed for us” Mayor!! Mayor Guilani he is NOT !! Mayor Guilani STEPPED UP and WAS THE LEADER of N.Y.C. post 9-11, he didn’t sit around whining “help us”,, “we need help”,, etc !! Mayor Guilani mobilized whatever was at his disposal and LEAD NYC out of the darkness of disaster !! Your Mayor failed to learn by Mayor Guilani’s example !!

N.O. is NOT the first City to endure a Disaster many cities have had equal or worst disasters and came back bigger and better. But, those cities at least started the process on their own,, they TOOK the INITIATIVE to help THEMSELVES !!

The response N.O. received post flooding was staggering/awesome !! A nation-wide disaster response was immediate and never has a City in the US received so much assistance so fast in history!!

When N.O. learns to stand up on it’s OWN two feet and starts helping it’s self it will regain it’s own dignity and self esteem,, and the rest of the Nation will feel less like just feeding a “whiny baby” incapable of doing anything for it’s self.

Granted,, I was not physically there,, so my judgment is based on ALL the information in the news etc. But seeing the overwhelming evidence N.O. did little and the rest of the Nation did more than has ever been done before in such a few hours, sympathy for lack of personal responsibility and collective responsibility for actions before and after the flood is pretty low.

(since everything but what Barry says is bs…) UH,, if you don’t like the possible answers,, don’t ask the question. BTW.. Alot of America wasn’t there and have the same understanding based on the same information. (which is available to all)

I researched my answer’s very carefully and provided just a few link to the information I based my answer on. It is still a mystery why the Mayor failed to move every public-school bus, emergency service vehicle (ambulances-fire trucks-etc) to higher ground so they would be available after the flood. Why did the LA Governor fail to act ?

Last thought,, having been through several disasters I have an excellent understanding of what happens,,, And I’ve been flooded out of my home twice and I wasn’t whining to the Federal Government,, “I demand you come save me,,, I’m entitled”
