It is a wonderful place to raise a family. The islands are alot more mellow then most places in the mainland. The prices are high though but at the very least most of the wages compares with the cost of living. A move to Hawaii would make you wonder why you had ever lived elsewhere.

Just a friend.
Hawaii is a wonderful and very unique place to raise a family. There are a lot of selling points but keep in mind some drawbacks.

For all of it's diversity, it's a very provincial location. If you move there, you do not instantly become one of them. You will be an outsider for quite some time before being accepted.

It's a very expensive place to live as everything is imported, even the chocolate macadamia nuts. There are not a lot of great job opportunities, and even less for outsiders. You better have a very good set "needed" job skills or you might be moving back rather quickly. There is a reason most kids leave the islands to find a living, because there are not many on the islands.

The last big one is "island fever". Most people who move there get it early and have it for a long time. You are very isolated on the islands and you get a "alone" feeling. Believe it or not, you can easily run out of things to do and you can't just run off to Vegas every other weekend. Your extended family is far away and it can be hard on a person. You might be in Paradise but it sure won't feel like it after a couple of months.

Raising a family in Hawaii is a great idea! Hawaii is the melting pot of the Pacific and kids here learn to grow up with every color of people with prejudice.

As far as prices go, things are expensive here. It's the price of living in paradise. For example, a gallon of milk costs $6 and gas has been known to go over $3/gallon for regular gas.

Also, since we live on an island, the cost of housing is high because there is only a limited number of houses to own/rent. A studio apartment is renting for close to $2K/month (if you can find it!).

Hope this helps.......

The locals will tell you YES and the Mainlander's will tell you NO. Your best bet is to visit the islands first & do your homework on them before making any decisions like this.

Raising a family in Hawaii is awsome. Sure if your comming from the mainland the price of living is CHEAPER compair to HAWAII, but people have to realize most of the products are shiped over to Hawaii so of course things will be expensive. Plus your place of emploment will = out with the price of living. The last time i was home (North Shore Oahu) the price of a gl. milk was about $4 or $5 bucks. and gas prices is the same with Cali. prices. Fresh air free beaches less crime then anywhere i know. Have fun!

it rocks!!!! it's nice and sunny, people are diverse, aloha spirit is prominent. it's a lovely place to live. i've lived here all my life, and i wouldn't have it any other way. it's a nice place for a family, and living costs are rather similar to the u.s. mainland. i think.....

its a little on the expensive side, dont know where yur from but i live in san diego and the prices are very similar, if you can afford cali you can afford hawaii. but its so worth it. ive been there a few times and i plan on moving there.

bob
Living here is pretty expensive like some people said before, gallon of milk is around $5, gas right now is high 2's chepeast bob has seen is 2.82 for the regular unleaded and at the highest place bob seen it was 3.02 for regular unleaded a gallon, keep in mind this is in oahu and bob is pretty sure oahu has the cheapest gas, if not its either oahu or the big island.

Property is expensive depending on the neighborhood and island, generally a decent 1 story 3 bedroom 1 bath house goes for 500,000 at its lowest on oahu. On the big island the lowest is about 450,000 and thats in shitty *** neighborhoods you wouldnt want to be in in the firstpalce or a pile of crap house. The richer the neighborhood the more the price, anywhere on the beach is basically at a 1 mil minimum just because its at the beach. Bob has seen a small 1 story, 3 bedroom 1 bath house in a decent neighborhood go for 750,000 and the house was a piece of crap. Apartments, are generally 800-1500 depending on the area for a single bedroom apartment, they get into the 2000's for bigger ones.

Someone has said, keep in mind bob does not know if this is true and it is not proven in anyway, that it cost an average 3000 a month for a single person to live in decent area. Keep in mind that was for one person, who had a car, bought groceries for themselves and rented a apartment in a decent neighborhood.

As for raising a family, Hawai'i is a odd place, bob is going to tell you straight up right now, local people(you need to remember it is not just hawaiians here, infact hte largest ethnicity here is asian) who were born and raised here do NOT like it when someone from the mainland comes and acts like everybody needs to move over for them. The key to fitting in is to be respectful to everyone elses culture, there is just about every ethnicity here and each one generally has its own culture, however it all melds into one culture taht all the local people generally live by. It is pretty much in the locals culture and way of thinking that they do not like white people, its not liek where they see a white person on the street they gonna go and lynch them, but a lot of locals will tend to be more aggresive and more quickly to judge just because you are white. This is because those assholes from the military base come to our islands and are disrespectful to the culture and way of life people here live and expect everyone to move over for them, thats why you hear on the news couple whtie people get beat and their skull crushed, but thats a different matter. As for kids, bobs intermidiate was hostile for white kids, it was a school that like 10 elementry schools dumped in and all the base kids and locals mixed, that is why we had the riot fight where all the locals attacked the base kids.

all in all, yes its expensive here both everyday living and property. It is a good place to raise a family if you and your kids are respectful to everyone else, a example of how we are different here then the mainland, is the cars, people here dont tend to drive around on the road as fast as they and look like they in a rush to go everywhere and if they see someone at the intersection or coming out of a parking lot they will usually let them go, if you speeding around and being a asshole you gonna end up on the ground with your skulls cracked and on the news like that one military couple.

It is really expensive. To rent a house alone is about 2-3 thousnad depending on the area.. But if you want to raise a family here, I think it is safer and better.

Aloha,

Oahu living is no more expensive than most other places I have ever lived. Groceries, gas and housing are high, but no higher than in any big city. My wife & I are retired & we bought a condo for around $200,000, just minutes from downtown Honolulu. Salt lake area is very nice place to live.

If you shop & buy what's on sale, food is not too bad. Although I do admit we sneak onto the base to shop at the comissary when we can.

Good luck to you. It is a major change unless you have lived on an island before. As for this "Island fever" thing, it's all in your head. We have been here for years and will never be able to see everything on this island, let alone all the other island.

Mahalo!
