Los Angeles: Are people really transient and plastic there?

I'm considering a move there, and I'm currently living in Miami... I can't STAND it here because the people are just so crap.... Is it that bad there too?

Just like the grocery store, there are two types: Paper or plastic.

One thing I've found to be true: If you have bad neighbors where you used to come from, you'll probably have bad neighbors where you are going. Funny how that works...

You will find all kinds here. There are many places where you'll find regular people, doing what they do. I happen to live in a neighborhood of good folks, people who are real. You just need to get to know them. Sure, there are a couple of plastic-types in there, but I just keep an open mind, and keep the hand of friendship out there.

I love the diversity here. You'll see more kinds of neighborhoods, more kinds of cultures, and the best part: more kinds of FOOD! Food is never boring here in LA. If you're bored, it's your own fault.

I can agree with some of the answers people have given you... I used to live in LA and i can say that i miss the city a lot! .. It is so diverse in cultures, nationalities, beliefs... etc.. that it gives you the opportunity to be yourself and find people like yourself.. Of course if you want to see people that are materialistic, then live in Beverly Hills and Bel Air.. if you like surfing and relaxation.. move to Hermosa Beach or Santa Monica... or if you just want to live in LA.. just pick the right apartment and area for you... just be open minded!

And please remember one thing.. most people are not fake in LA, we are just nice!

Let me say it like this, don't take offense.

The people who are plastic and transient are the ones who come from other states.

Angelino's are aren't like that at all. most are calm and easy going, i mean who wouldn't be if you have the beach and the mountains close to each other

1. Note some of the answers are from people who don't even live here. They are a victim of the stereotypes, just as you are.

2. Remember, they only show extremes on TV. Never the vast majority of people who are just average working stiffs. It will all depend on what crowd you run with. In other words, if you are going to hang around Phil Spector's house, don't be surprised if you get shot.

3. Everyplace has it's good and bad points. If LA where all bad, a bazillion people wouldn't be living here.

4. It is very expensive here. Don't expect to come out here, get a job making $8.00 an hour and think you'll be able to get by. Unless you are planning to be "a transient" and live in Uncle Antonio's Sidewalk Hotel.

I'm not too sure about being "plastic, but some of them are partially "silicone". Wink, wink.

(I may be old, but I'm not dead)

depends who you associate with the plastic people are all over!

jusfloein
Basically, I think its ignorant to label one city as plastic, paper, poser, or whatever. Of course there are fake "plastic" people in Los Angeles, but there are also smart, real, down to earth people there too. There are too many different nationalities, genders, races, and classes of people to define or classify such a large city (and county) as one word. I lived in LA and LA county for many years, and i loved some parts, and hated others. It can be a good and fun place to live. It really just depends on where you go.

Like 2pac Said:
"To live and die in LA, it's the place to be,
you've got to be there to know it, what everybody wanna see"

Its really not that bad out here

Traveling girl
la is not full of "plastic".

but if you go to like beverly hills and new port beach, bell air etc... then you will find one. :D

hopes this works!!! :)

I live in Los Angeles and I can tell you that Los Angeles is nothing like that. I'm not plastic or transient and looking around neither are alot of people here. It's just a sterotype of Angelenos. You get crap people where ever you go. A change of scenery doesn't really equal happiness because there are weird people everywhere. Los Angeles is a great place and there are alot of wonderful people here. I mean not everyone walking down the street is a Paris Hilton you know. It's just portrayed like that very negatively. Just like everyone in Miami aren't Cuban, everyone in LA are not plastic dolls.

Good Luck

Joe
There is deffinately that element. Los Angeles is diverse, more diverse than any other place in the Union I can think of.

EinsteinsReal
ohhh yes.....very much so....I will never go back to LA, not even to save my life.

voodewchile
Miami and LA are pretty much one in the same when it comes to being shallow.

Why don't you move to a REAL part of the US, like the midwest. Straight up American Hillybilly Pride around here!

So my question to YOU is, why move to a crap place to live in an even crappier place?

Even the dogs get plastic surgery in LA. If you are looking for real people-don't go there.
