New York is not for everyone. I was born in New York and live in New York
The pro's: There is always something to do, never a dull moment
You don't need a car
Very diverse
The people are not rude, that is a myth
The cons: VERY expensive. Movies are $10-$12, clubs cost $20+ to get in and once your in 1 drink is at least $10. A bottle of liqueur is a few hundred.
Rent is gonna run you over $1000
The subway is convenient but very very gross
Oh and you have 24 hour access to just about anything (food, laundry etc. Thats a def. pro
In conclusion............New York is not for everyone but its wonderful.no place like it..Good luck |

My brother moved to New York and he can't stand it, he said visiting is fun, but living there is a complete different story. He always thought about the big city and trendy places, exciting people and interesting places to go, but after all that fades you get stuck with rude people, hustlers, constant noise, and head splitting traffic. On a positive note, I've been there and I think its nice, My cousin lives in NYC near Brooklyn. she loves it but doesnt spend the entire year there. |

i love new york. but keep this in mind before deciding to move here: a trip to new york is waaaaaaaay different than life in new york. it's not that glamorous and exciting really. |

My cousin lives there. You will probably like it if you know what it is like... but you should really try visiting the area if you haven't already. Rent is really high for small places. Most people don't own cars cuz its easier to walk everywhere. You should visit the area for at least a week to experience it. |

I agree with Eug B. As much as I like New York, I'm ready to get out. I've lived here three years and it gets expensive.
BUT, when you first move here, it's amazing! Just make sure you'll have enough money to live here--otherwise seeing the great nightlife, shopping, etc is torture for someone on a budget. |

Depends on how much money you have.... |

Unless you are rich or prefer paying $2000 a month for a closet then look into the outer boroughs to rent an apartment. Astoria,Queens and Bay Ridge,Brooklyn are two great places for younger people. Great restaurants, bars, coffee shops and easy access by train to Manhattan in about 20-40 minutes depending on what part of the area you choose to move to. You get more for your $$$ outside of the city and with the few hundreds a month you save on rent you can go into the city and go shopping or see a show. |

I live in NY.............Well NYC is fun and all but it can get pretty expensive, if you have the money to live in Manhattan then that is definitely the place to live. That's where everyone from NYC go to hang and meet up. |

It probably wont live up to your expectations. But besides that, you're going to go to school there? I could tell you thats its great to live on the upper west side, but you will most likely have to stay in a dorm. Apartments in manhattan, even small studios are 1500 a month. And forget about having a car...public transportation like the rest of us. And clubs arent like they are portrayed on tv...once you turn 21 you'll probably end up at clubs in the village, which are just old man bars with good music and younger clientele. |

College should be a lot of fun here, as you probably won't have to provide for yourself, and while school CAN be stressful... it won't be as stressful as working full-time for an insane Manhattan boss.
After college, GOOD LUCK living in Manhattan, you'll need at least 1 stable, well-paying job in order to afford the tiniest studio. A good friend is living in the East Village in a small one-bedroom, rent-stabilized apartment, and his rent is $1800 a month. And that's a GOOD deal. Can you afford that on your own?
Aside from that, New York is a cold, lonely place. Cold because it snows for half of the year, and lonely because all the people you see running around town really don't want to have anything to do with you. But if you have that 2-3 best friends as most of us in New York have, you'll be just fine. And, you'll be too busy working our 60 hour work weeks to hang out with your friends anyway.
You'll find out more once you get here for college... |

I love Ny too! I´ve always wanted to live there. I went there on December and it was freezing cold!!but I still love it. There is so much to do in NYC everyday and at whatever hours, 24/7. The best place to live in Manhatten is depending how much you can afford, Manhatten is really expensive and the place where the rich and elite people live is the "Upper East Side". also the "Upper West Side" is really nice and elite and a little less expensive. The "Chelsea" district is where the gay population hangs out and there is located all the cool nightlife and the hottest nightclubs. "Tribeca" and "Soho" is where all the art galleries and museums are located, that is for the more artsy/bohemian kind of people. Then "Harlem" is the most affortable place in all Manhattan and is where a lot of the african american population lives. |
