I lived in San Diego for nearly 30 years & I'm still homesick for it. Some people say it takes a little getting used to, but I think it's a wonderful place. Other than the climate & maybe a little culture adjustment I can't imagine it'd be much ifferent than NYC. |

Big Apples and Oranges. You know NYC, be prepared for a much smaller city in San Diego.. But, this is not bad ( my daughter lives in NYC, and I lived in San Diego). San Diego brings mild weather year round - without a doubt the best in the country. It has great beaches, and is close to the mountains and dessert. You can literally be at the beach in the warm sun, drive to the moutains for snow, and continue on to the dessert in all of 3 hours. San Diego has great restaraunts (not like NYC, but still good). |

Both are great - for what they offer, but you couldn't have chosen much more opposite ways of life to compare against each other.
It's like trying to decide which is better; driving a car or riding a motorcycle. It's a very personal choice based on many different things. |

move to San Diego, no winters no grouchy people, plenty of sun and fresh produce, you will be happy! |

As others have said, they are two very different cities. If you are looking for the fast paced, urban lifestyle of NY then SD isn't really a good fit; LA or SF would be better. But if you want a change then it might be good. San Diego is a lot more laid back and easy going than NY. We dress more casual, you'll see 40yo lawyers wearing board shorts and flip flops, and are not in a rush as much, except on the freeeways, we drive kind of fast here. It's a big city with kind of a small town atmosphere, but there is still plenty to do all the time. I'm grew up in the Bay Area and feel there is just as much to do here as there is back up there eventhough there are twice as many people in the Bay Area. The weather is great year round so you can always be outside doing something. There are a lot of transplants here, especially from the New England/Boston area and I think most people are pretty outgoing and friendly here; I think when you have a lot of transplants in one city they will tend to be more outgoing b/c you want to meet new people all the time.
There are many places to go close by too. If you want to go to a big city LA isn't that far away. Orange County and Mexico are right there too and Vegas is about a 4.5 hour drive.
If you want a laid back, beach culture type of lifestyle then SD would be a good fit. But if you are looking for that fast paced, urban NY lifestyle then you probably wouldn't enjoy it so much. It all really depends what you are looking to get out of San Diego on whether or not you should move here. |

San Diego's great. Are you tired of the hustle bustle of a huge city like new york? San diego has so many great things! |

I moved to San Diego from Wisconsin 2 years ago. I'd say go for the move! I work with a bunch of former New Yorkers and they love it. One thing though...a woman I work with is from New York and she misses people who are down-to-earth and up-front like New Yorkers are. Out here in San Diego, people kind of need their space. And everyone is from somewhere else here...you'll find people from Washington, Northern California, Idaho, Wisconsin, New York, Florida, Texas. Basically everywhere, I guess, but those are common places.
If you do love NYC, you might be a little disappointed with the people out here. There isn't really a bar scene and people don't really drink that much. People are pretty laid back and less angry than in cold weather parts though. |

Public transportation is a joke in San Diego and it is very spread out so you need to situate yourself carefully when you move down here. Still, if done right, San Diego can be an incredible place to live.
One can live in New York and never get bored. There's really much more to do.
Like someone said - apples and oranges. |

I lived in San Diego most of my life and loved it..Now Im in Texas..Homesick too....San diego has everything you could ever want...The weather is a plus all year round..Nice places to shop, nice beaches, and plenty of things to do. Your about 30min to snow covered mt, 45 to the desert, and 20 to the beaches..You can have it all in San Diego..Except the realestate is expensive, but then again New York is even more expensive...So I guess your in... |

San Diego definitely has NYC beat for the weather, but you have to really determine what is important to you in life. San Diego is a very laid back town compared to NYC. Real estate is a little more expensive in NYC, but not by much.
I guess I consider NYC to be the center of the universe, and if you enjoy a comfortable life there, I would stick in NYC. |

Wow! I am from the Bronx and loved being in Manhattan, it is a huge change in lifestyles. Everything is a trade off, no pizza at 3am, but then again no snow, you must drive mass transit sucks, no more 63 tracks at Grand Central the San Diego has 2 tracks one south, and one north, NY no beach, CA, beach. Hard decision, it is time for you to visit. |

experienced both many times and san diego has the weather and the outdoors. nyc has the food. and you don't have to take the car. that's if you're in manhattan. think of most if not all california big cities as nyc but spread out. |

If you love NYC, moving to Southern California will be a challenge. I left NYC after 15 yrs and headed to SF (which is more urban than SD) and found it very hard. However, after being west now for a few yrs, I am thinking of headed to SoCal... and am still quite nervous!!!
You should decide what you really need and want out of your lifestyle: do you like to walk? Prefer to drive? will you miss the change of seasons? do you have kids? do you want to have kids? are you renting or ready to buy? are you cool with being so close to la frontera? do you want everything right outside your door 24 hrs? NYC has TONS to offer; what do you actually take advantage of on a regular basis? Are you an HM freak (I don't think it's in SD yet)? What NYC boroughs and neighborhoods do you like?
Best of luck to you. |

If you love NYC, you might find San Diego too boring! It is usually a place for retiring couples.
I had stayed there for 2 months last year and it is a very quiet place which I love! New York is a busy city in which you will find many activities to do. Lifestyle in San Diego is slow compared to the fast lifestyle there in NYC.
Why dont you try going for a short vacation first before finally thinking of finally settling in San Diego permanently.
There are places in San Diego not accessible to public transportation. I had bought 2 maps before going to San Diego, both were incomplete. I bought a 3rd, more complete one, however, it is too small to be seen by the naked eye! you need a magnifying lens! I had appreciated the whole of San Diego after riding all the trolley cars. The reason for this is that San Diego is so spread out. There are bus stations in most trolley stations. Comparing to New York where subway is very accessible to everyone. There are places which is too quiet! It is just fine with me, i just dont know if you will like it ! |

I would totally stay in NYC! Other than the weather, SD doesn't have much to offer. NYC has batter job opportunities, and as far as I'm concerned is much more centally located in terms of getting to other places...it's easier to get to Europe from there or any other place, for that matter. SD has no culture and you have to have a car...which means you spend a lot if time sitting in your car in traffic. It sucks! It's over crowded, and the people are sooo rude! New Yorkers are tons nicer than everyone says. On holiday weekends you really can't go anywhere because you'll spend hours looking for parking. |

I say stay in New York. San Diego is a spread out city that is boring, lacks culture, horrible food and public transportation. The only thing San Diego has going for it is the weather. It is very expensive here although I know that New York is really expensive too. The people here are fake, at least in New York people are honest and I disagree with the guy who said that the people in New York are grouchy. Also don't know if you are single but the guys here in San Diego are also lame. |
