Very safe. You don't need to be afraid .Fires don't come that close, they are mainly in the hills. And,if they do,the fire department evacuates way before it gets close. As for earthquakes, the one the other day was only a baby one.The news stations had to go out looking for anything that had even the slightest amount of damage because they had nothing to put on the news about it. I live five minuites from the epicenter,Chino Hills.By the time I realized it was an earthquake,it was over. We had no damage, but the water in the pool splashed out a little.I'm not saying they can't be real scary, they can. The Northridge Quake in 1995 was the worse, and I live almost two hours away.My Mother in Law lived right there and I have never seen anything like it.That was real, real, real scary, but they are doing alot of retrofitting since then. I would rather have an earthquake then a hurricane,or what I fear even worse,a tornado. You will be fine, everyone around will take care of you if something should happen. That is the way California People are.We ignoor you ,until something happens. Then you can't get rid of us! We are there for you! Byee |

Fires are usually up in the hills away from the main part of town.
Earthquakes (one's you feel, at least) come about once every 10-15 years. Even w/that, the building codes in CA or so strict it would take a huge one (like 7.5+) to make a typical structure fall down.
Tornadoes, hurricanes, snow storms, etc in rest of the US happen every season. Go figure.
CA has great colleges. UCLA (actually, anything in UC system is pretty good), Stanford, Berkeley, Cal-Tech, you name it.
Don't let the Earthquakes scare you away, you get use to them. $4.50 gas on the other hand is way more scary....
BTW,
We've got the Governator....he protects us all..... :P |

yep - and California is great.
You don't want to live on the San Andreas fault, or the Malibu coast.
but, as a college student, you couldn't afford to live in Malibu ( no insult intended.)
the fires are usually in the hills around LA.
============
Truthfully, wherever you live is either going to have earthquakes, fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods - SOMETHING.
So pick your major, and a good college for it.
wherever you go, if they have something regularly ( like earthquakes) they will teach you how to cope and react properly. |

It is as safe in California as it is anywhere. I've lived here for most of my 46 years. Yes, we have earthquakes, but we also have the strictest building codes when it comes to earthquake safety.
Depending on what part of California you'll be living, you'll find like every one else that most earthquakes don't amount to anything and are nothing to be afraid of. They are just a part of life.
I lived through "the big one" and many others; sometimes I didn't even notice them when other people did.
As for the wildfires, they are mostly in the forested regions; if you're planning on going to UCLA or somewhere in the city, you're going to be fine. Wildfires don't rage through cities.
Now, the smoke, on the other hand, has been a problem for many this year, but there have been an unusual amoung of fires this year.
Anywhere you live, you'll be susceptible to some force of nature be it earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, volcanoes, etc. I admit that while I laugh at people who panic when they feel the ground rumble here, I would probably react the same way during a tornado. |

The fires usually don't reach to Los Angeles. And I have lived here over 8 years and only had the one earthquake the other day which wasn't even that bad of a quake. Come on over we can hang out! |

Nah...I haven't been affected by either of those things (fortunately) and think about it this way, maybe california has had it's fill of those kinds of natural disasters for a while. It's a wonderful place to live. Good luck to you |

No, earthquakes occur only like every 10 years, and the big ones do. And fires, occur maybe a lot, but you really don't need to worry about it. My house was like 1 mile away from a fire about a week ago, and they took care of it. My house wasn't even threatened basically. |

well, instead of being intimidated by overpowering influence of the media in to-day's society, i suggest you worry more about the smog and heavy air pollution.
depending on which school you plan on attending, i suggest you go somewhere else.

I have been in California my whole life and the fires and earthquakes have never bothered me. Living in California there r always small earthquakes everyday most u don't feel, but you will get used to it. The larger earthquakes, these days, don't make that large of an impact since everything is now made earthquake proof. It might be scary at first but you will be just fine. The fires are mostly all under control so that doesn't have a big threat anymore since all of the damage is done. Also california doesn't normally have all these fires. California is a beautiful state and u should still go to college here :D |

I live in Northern California and go to school near Los Angeles.
I've never felt an earthquake in my 20 years of life that I can remember,
and while there have been some big ones it does depend where
you go to school and where you live. So you might never be affected by one. As for the fires, as long as you are not living in a home in a dry hilly area, the fires will pretty much just affect the air quality for a while.
I wouldn't let the fires and earthquakes stop you from coming here to
study. California is a wonderful place. And we don't get the hurricanes and tornadoes that other regions of the US get :P Now those look scary! |
