Hi,

Are you moving here alone? I think that would be tough at 18, but people are different. I know it would have been hard for ME, anyway. :)

It can be difficult to get a job when you're still on the mainland. A lot of businesses won't hire someone who doesn't have a local Hawaii address because so many people think they want to live in Hawaii, apply for a job, and then reality sets in and they end up not moving here. So local businesses are leery of hiring people who don't already live here. That being said, it CAN be done. I guess it all depends on what kind of work you're looking for. $13K is more than enough to live on for 2-3 months until you find a job and get stable, but you might not want to use up all your savings that way. It's up to you.

If I were you, I'd look on www.craigslist.com for a roommate. It's obviously cheaper to share a house or an apartment than it would be to live on your own, and if you click with the person, you'd have a built-in friend already! Craigslist has listings for the major islands (Hawai'i, O'ahu, Kaua'i, and Maui) so you could look for jobs and roommates on all of the islands and see which one might be your best fit. Maui is growing pretty fast and there will probably be lots of job opportunities there...and on O'ahu as well. O'ahu is the most populated island and has the most tourists, so there are always jobs available in the tourist industry: at hotels, etc. There is also the most nightlife, shopping, and dining on O'ahu. As a young person, that might be the most appealing to you.

The public transportation on O'ahu is pretty good, but I would want my own car unless you're living really close to where you work. It's expensive to ship a car over here, so your best bet would be to find a used one somewhere (again, look on Craigslist...and you can also look in the local paper) for a few hundred dollars. You can figure that out after you get here and you find out what your specific needs are.

Good luck! Hawaii is a great place to live and you'll probably enjoy it. Try to hang onto as much as your savings as you can, just in case you need it. Try to get a job before you move, if possible, and look for a roommate.

ETA: Please don't pay much attention to the other posters. I doubt any of them have ever lived in Hawaii, based on their answers. #1 - Hawai'i is not the "main" island. That is O'ahu, which I have already mentioned. Hawai'i is also known as the Big Island. It is mostly quite rural. It's growing, but not as fast as Maui and O'ahu are. #2 - you can not live on the beach in a tent! We do have some homeless people here in Hawaii and many of them live on the beach in tents and catch their own fish, but most people here live with family if they are having financial difficulties. It's illegal to sleep on most beaches without a permit and those are just for camping, not long term. You could probably get away with it for a while, but it doesn't sound to me as if that was an option you are considering anyway.

Oahu is the best because they won't be all mean to you because you're haole (term meaning white, which basically means youre from the mainland). It is easy finding a job if you know where to look. You seem to have enough money. As long as you are not spending more then you're making. Try and monitor your account. Renting an apartment or townhouse is very popular especially with todays high cost of living. If you are just living and working very close in the downtown area, then you will not need a car. Hawaii is probably the easiest place to make friends (at least in America).

I thought you were moving to England? Hawaii is just as awesome. You're best bet is to look in the tourist industry, you could work at a hotel/resort doing any number of things including being one of those hott bartenders all the guys flock to just to flirt with. You could also be waitress anywhere or anything along the lines of dive assistant, surf pro, deck hand anything like that if you like the water.

You have enough money saved to get a start don't worry. And no you shouldn't need a car... if it comes down to it you can get like a motorbike or something if you really need to get around. Alot of resorts have on-site housing for their staff. Jobs are kind of hard to find at the moment however... there is a fair bit of unemployment (and subsequently crime) especially since one of those airlines shut down less people are going to visit Hawaii.

What are you interested in? That should help you find a job. I don't know about making friends because many of the islanders are kind of exclusive but you seem nice and hott too so it shouldn't be hard and the boys will likely be all over you. Good luck and I will tell my friend who is from Hawaii to help you make friends if you need it he is a good guy who won't try to mack on you like I would.

I wouldn't go untill I had 5-10 interviews lined up. That's just me though. Use the web as a tool and line up 5-10 of them in a 2 day period that way you won't lose your money as quickly

You could live on the main island (Hawaii)

It will be easy to find a job there. There are many small businesses looking for employees.

You should probably save up at least $20,000 just to be safe.

You should live with a friend if you can so you can save up more money for a house.

Yes, you need a car. It will take a long time to walk places, and there isn't much public transportation.

It is extremely easy to make friends there. I went there and I met many nice and friendly people.

- I hope this helped

Also look at this site.

i'm glad you're deciding to move to Hawaii. i suggest you live on the island of o'ahu.. which is the most commercialized island and has many more things for you to do as a young adult. you definitely have enough money saved up to start your life out there, but I suggest, like another person suggested, that you have interviews lined up before you even get there.. go to various career websites, such as indeed.com (my favorite website to look for jobs) and apply online to as many places as you can and see if you can have interviews lined up before you reach the islands.. that way, you save time and money.. but all in all, it is pretty easy to find a job in hawaii.. i also suggest that you just get a room, it's the cheapest way to live since you're only 18 and will be living by yourself.. a room is all you need.. unless you decide to have roommates.. craigslist.org is an AWESOME tool for finding a place to live.. if you live on the island of o'ahu, you probably won't need a car.. at least just yet.. you'll eventually have one in the future, but to start off, you probably won't need one yet.. the transportation system on oahu is very convenient.. the bus system is awesome.. and it also runs 24 hours, so you'll always have transportation, no matter what.. do extensive research on what you're getting yourself into.. and have everything planned out, because relocating is very hectic.. as for the other islands, maui would be my second bet for you.. it is the second most commercialized island, but defintely more relaxing and laid back.. not as fast paced as the island of o'ahu.. so you might want to look into that.. i wish you the best of luck and when you get there, remember to hug a coconut tree for me because i miss the islands so much.. wait, never mind, i'm going to be there in a week and a half!! YESSSUUH!! lol.. e-mail me if you have any more questions.. i'm born and raised in o'ahu, i know the whole island in the back of head.. i know the good places to live, i know where all the jobs are at, i know how the people are, i know everything about the island of o'ahu, so feel free to contact me if you have any more questions..

For a start, I think $13,000 is ok. You could make it for about half a year with this amount of money (pay for rent and food). The average price for a studio on Oahu is about $800. You can have it cheaper if you find a roommate. Check craigslist.org to find apartments or roommates.

I have lived on Oahu for 5 years now. If you're looking to find a job, Oahu is the best island because there are way more jobs and opportunities here than on the other islands. The other islands are more laid-back and quiet and jobs are limited. Also, you should look for a job when you're already here. It's easier this way. You can find many jobs in the tourism industry and in hotels and restaurants. The salary here is often times lower than on the U.S. mainland, and yes, it's more expensive here. That's why people often times have 2 or more jobs to make a living in Hawaii. You have to work hard here, and often times there isn't much time left to go to the beach or do what tourists do (activities, tours, etc.).

Also, if you pick Oahu, you should first live somewhere in Honolulu because this is where most of the jobs on Oahu are. Later, when you've settled in, have a stable job and some more savings, you can always move to the country.

No, you don't need a car if you choose to live on Oahu. The bus system is great here. You will probably need a car on the other islands. There, buses hardly run or not at all.

go online...there are sites about living in Hawaii...and you can write or contact each island's chamber of commerce for more info...
...each island has different things to offer...Ohau is one of the ones most traveled...for tourism...maybe that would help in getting a job?....maybe you could contact local businesses before you move there and get some information on job opportunities...
the other islands are less developed...and have more natural beauty...but that might mean less chance of jobs....

Yea u good go for it. Start off in Honolulu over in Waikiki. What kind of jobbie you trying to get. You can easily get timeshare jobs like 2min of being there. It works for some peeps for most it doesnt. You can try and get a bar job or work at a restaurant.

You have plenty saved. You might have to get a cheap hotel when you first get there till you get a place. Get the Sunday Honolulu Advertiser they have a Rental Section that will greatly help you. Check on craiglist.org Check places over at the Kuhio Village they have rentals for like $1000 a month.

You wont need a car. You can get a bike or maybe buy a moped($1300) to get around. Hawaii is very easy to make friends its really easy going out there.

Sounds like a dream come true,K,but I hope you realise something;living in a place is not like vacationing in it.You can't live in the vacation resort, you would be living in the REAL place, and, hate to say it,but Hawaii has never had a great economy.Another thing, also hate to say it;you're not going far,in Hawaii or anywhere else, without some higher education, the hs diploma isn't worth much all by itself anymore. You could pick a field, and get a degree in a year,or 18 months, and it would be paying for itself for the rest of your' working life.

Sorry if I'm pooing on your' parade a little, but it's SO easy to screw up everything in this world,I don't want to see you bite off more than you can chew.Good luck :)(:

oh boy

Oahu

the money - ya just barely enough imo

jobs - i dunno ... i thought i heard they were hard to find

there is a cheap hostel there, but the one good thing about hawaii is you can live off the land if you want .. eating berries, fruit fish etc, and sleep on a tent on the beach as well

friends ... there's easier places in the world to make friends, but it's not as bad as france lol
