You need to think about what skills do you have to compete with the islanders that came here to the US to get education and skills and then go back to their own island to be successful. In those countries you do not go there poor and hope to become rich. you go there with money to become richer. almost any island cost of living is cheaper...you just need to make sure that you will always be able to generate income. Can you take your current job there? if you have good skills and money saved up? Go anywhere....Jamaica, Martinque, Barbados,.Guayana, belize, mexico...
Think about what you have to offer that Island and the people of that Island.
Try the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico - at least you can still be an american citizen..so that way it will be easier for you to come back...
just go on a long vacation then come back... |

Key West is great, but the cost of living is high
Bali is beautiful with a low cost of living, but English is not the native language.
What could you do there?
Host tourist trips. |

There are some good tropical places to live in. But the only kind of immigrants they accept are those who have lots of money.
If you have enough money to start a small business in Thailand and employ a few local people there. Then you will be allowed to live there and earn your keep from your business. But of course, you need lots of money to start a business. And you have to be good at doing business too. Or else you will loose your money.
There are many tourists visiting Thailand from USA, UK, and other european countries. It's possible to start a tourist-related business there. And your knowledge of English would be good enough for that. |

St. Thomas Island!
It is a US possession in the Caribbean (so English will be fine!), and it is absolutely gorgeous. I went there on a cruise, so you can be sure that tourism is a major industry. Pretty much that is the way it is going to be anywhere you go that is tropical: tourism is the major industry.
Could you be successful in something related to tourism? |

What do you do for work?
Are you willing to leave the US?
The only place in the US where the cost of living is higher than NYC is San Francisco. That leaves you with a pretty open list of possibilities. |

Tropical (almost always) = $$$$$$
Florida is going to be your best bet. But it matters what your doing in life. Taiwan may be cheep, but very new language. But I'm not sure how warm they always stay |

You could go to Florida, the cost of living will be slightly less but then again it's full of old people waiting to die and hurricanes. Or maybe Australia, it's more so a desert but the cities are very nice I hear and there are a few tech center living areas that have major career opportunities. And as a plus both areas speak English. |
