Name the absolute best beach towns/cities in America to both visit and live in?

What coastal towns in America, centred around beach life have the best quality of life? By quality of life I mean safe and relatively crime free environment, with good schools and a decent standard of living. Those things are important, but it must also have a picturesque village like atmoshphere with great shops, restaurants and bars all within walking distance to the sea. But most of all, it has to have a fabulous beach! In other words, I'm looking for a beachside community anywhere in America that is just as nice to visit as a tourist as it is to live in as a permanent resident. I'm looking for a place that's is both great for singles as well as a family; a place that has jaw dropping beauty, convenience, and is downright fun to live in. It doesn't matter what part of the country it's in either. Does such an idylic community actually exist in America?

starting west of me
Dauphin Island and Orange Beach, Alabama

Pensacola/Gulf Breeze/Pensacola Beach, Florida (my town)
Navarre Beach, Florida
Fort Walton, Florida
Destin, Florida
Sandestin, Florida
Seaside, Florida (The Truman Show - Jim Carrey was filmed there)
Seagrove and Grayton, Florida

These are all located on the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle. I think Destin has the most beautiful water.
I'm a little biased to Pensacola though.

San Diego, California for sure! I've lived here my whole life and there's nothing like it. I've traveled the world and still can't wait to get home to the beautiful sunsets, gorgeous beaches and nice clean air. It's very safe here, I never feel uncomfortable walking down the street at night, even in downtown. There's lots of little beach towns along the coast. It's a very fun city and very family oriented. There's also a younger crowd. Very good schools and even better colleges. I plan on raising my family here and living here for the rest of my life.

Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Generally safe, clean beach, lots of nice stores for window shopping on Arnold Avenue. As with all shore communities, better to visit in the off-season.... or, slightly off-season.

Newport Beach CA. Less posey than the N.LA beaches.

Mystic, CT; Cape Cod, MA; Wilmington, NC

Try Wildwood, NJ! It has the biggest beaches in the state, all free. The boardwalk is fun and it has a nice downtown shopping area.

St Augustine, FL. This town is the oldest continually populated settlement in the US, therefore there are many of things to see and do. There is also Castillo de San Marco, which is a fort from the days of the Spainards. There is a strip called St George Street that is for walking only and lined with shops with lots of things to do. It also is home to Flagler College, which was built by Henry Flagler long ago as the "Flagler Hotel" and is beautiful even today. They offer tours to show the whole campus and you can get a small insite as to what a grand hotel it was. St Augustine is a beach city on the north east coast of FL. Also, less than 20 miles south there is Fort Matanzas (another fort for sightseeing) and Marineland. About 20 miles north is Jacksonville, FL. where you have a big city and everything you need, such as airports, naval base, and all the shopping your heart could desire. Even with all the attractions the town, while it has grown quite a deal, still has the feeling of a small community. Take it from me, I grew up there! It's great.

What you just said sounds like Mission Viejo, California....down to the very last sentence...but the beach is a small drive away, not RIGHT NEXT to the city.

Pensacola, FL is a nice place to live. The cost of living there is very reasonable too.
