I love New York, love the energy and love visiting there. HOWEVER, Chicago wins hands down. It's got a big city feel but offers so many areas to escape. New York is a great bustling city but it's SO overbearing. You can get lost there, both physically and emotionally. In NYC, it's lead, follow or get the fcuk out of the way. Chicago allows you to be yourself. You want the hustle and bustle, the gung-ho lifestyle, you can find it easily. You want laid back, slower pace, you can find that just as easily. And it's still a mecca for the media, so aspiring actors, musicians, writers, etc. can find notoriety here. Major musical acts, plays, etc. HAVE to come through here. And, have to admit, Chicago's a lot cleaner. NYC can be a filthy city. I was there a year ago and still can't get used to the sight of garbage piled up high in FRONT of a house. Who wants to see that first thing in the morning when you head out for work? Depressing... Chicago, while it still has its problems (the Mayor could spend a dime or two to improve the West Side instead of planting more flowers on michigan Ave.) is pretty clean for a city of its size.

If you haven't been to both, do NYC. If you have been to the states before and you plan to come back, do Chicago.

I live in Chicago and I love it, but NYC is the largest city in US. If you have to live once, live it up in NYC.
