New York Trip? |
My school is offering a 5 day trip to new york to see all the famous art galleries, the statue of liberty, the empire state building etc. The only problem is that it is £750 - my mum said I can go if she starts saving now (even though we are skint)! I feel really guilty that she is being so nice, even though we dont have a lot of money.
The trip is next February 2009.
I live in the UK by the way so its a long way. Would you go? PLease tell me what you think about this.
Thanks :) |

I think you have a great mum and you should do everything you can to help around the house and make it known how much you appreciate her. |

My feeling is that we save money so that we have it to spend it on life's pleasures, and this is certainly one of life's pleasures.
That's what my family has done as well; it may take a long time to pay off the bills, but we have taken trips that we will have memories of for a lifetime. Those experiences are priceless.
I am certainly a bit biased, but I'll go on record as saying that NYC is one of those places that people just have to see.
If this is something that you really want to do, I say take the trip, and give your mom a huge thank-you. She has given thought to this, crunched the numbers, and found that even if it means a bit of sacrifice, you can pull this off. It will make her happy to see you happy.
Maybe you can help out as well; if all of you find a way to save a total of about 2 pounds every day, that will cover this trip. If it's possible, maybe even find a part-time job, or do a few little odd jobs along the way.
Maybe one of these years, when this is done, you'll find a way to take the family on a trip, bring them over to see all of the great things you saw when you were in school.
Do it; I don't think anyone involved will regret it. |

I think you should go, I would.
It is a great opportunity for you and it is really sweet of your mom to want you to go. Try to get an after school job so that you can earn some money to contribute towards the trip. Saving money wherever you can will also help you will be surprised to realize how it all adds up. Try to eat at home instead of out, invite your friends for DVDs instead of going to movies, don't buy anything you don't need. Your mom will appreciate the help and you won't feel as guilty. |

I would most definitely go! New York City is a wonderful place to go, and I think it is worth every penny. Maybe you would feel less guilty if you helped out around the house or got a job to help pay some of it. |

I think you have a fantastic mum, who obviously wants to give you the very best. You are SO lucky!
I wouldn't presume to tell you how you and your family should spend your money, but I will say this: The price you quote is VERY good; particularly if it includes airfare. As far as the worthiness of the trip itself goes, it sounds like your school is targeting some of the very best New York has to offer: We are home to some of the best museums in the world, and the other site you mention are iconic parts of the world landscape.
It's a fantastic trip to make, and one you definitely want to make in your lifetime . . . everyone should go to NYC at least once! Is this the time to do it? Show your mum the question you've posed here, and all the answers you've gotten. I think she'll know what a thoughtful daughter she has in you, and she'll give you an honest assessment as to whether or not she can afford for you to go.
Good luck, and happy travels!

Yes. You wouldn't want to miss this experience because it's probably only once in a lifetime you get to see such wonderful things! If it was a city that didn't have a lot to see, it wouldn't be worth it but New York has so much to offer and it's well worth the money. |

NYC is Great! I suggest you to go to the Rockefeller Center. It is really cool and fun to be in there, you would enjoy the shops, ice skating rink, museums, and the city itself. I also would suggest you to visit Time Square, and Broadway Theater. There are awesome areas and places in New York City. You will love it! Enjoy! |

Yes, you should really go.
For Statue of Liberty, you should consider taking free Staten Island Ferry but it does not stop on Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island.
Right now, Statue of Liberty only has ground open, and above remains closed unless if you're with tourist.
Metropolitan Museum of Art & Cloisters has famous art galleries and it is same day admission. |

You should definitely take the opportunity to go to NYC. You never know when you will be able to go again so go now while you can. try to get a part time job to help out with the cost of the trip as well. Your mom seems like a wonderful mom. Make sure she knows how much you appreciate her. |
