OK so if I moved from Kansas to Hollywood how long would it take to become a star??? |
I am willing to work hard but only have about 7 1/2 weeks of unemployment left and will need to get a new or good used car because I know you need a car there. Also any ideas on a cheap safe place to live near the beach would be appreciated. Thanks
BTW I did have a role in the Senior class play so I hope that will be a "leg up"...

The Thunderbird Mobile Home park sounds like your kind of place. That is just off the 101 freeway and 23 interchange. The freeway entrance is just outside the park entrance so you have easy off and easy on. (one time somebody got arrested for DUI when they ran off the freeway into a mobile home park ...but you still can just get on to go to all of your early am auditions. Sometimes the freeway noise can get a little load but I do not think that will matter because you will be so busy on location in France.
Unemployed? Not to worry! The welfare office, food bank and mental health services are conveniently located a few bocks away. John Robert Powers is also located close by so I am sure you can use those offices for getting a few TV AD gigs.
Do not forget that no matter how broke or starving you are get your head shots on the best photographic paper available.
Please do not be discouraged. After all your high school acting experience proves what a high powered talent you are. And just remember break a leg.
Good luck and welcome to california. |

I once saw a car in Hollywood with Kansas plates and a bumper sticker that read, "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore."
It's a lot easier to become infamous than famous in LA.
Try shooting somebody. |

Well you know what they say about acting in high school in Kansas.
If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
Its up to you KC, KC.
My that sounds like a great song. |

Just keep clicking your heels, Dorothy...
The sad part is, I actually had a roommate - a Mormon girl from Park City, Utah - who really thought like this. It took her a year of waitressing, and $100 highlights that made her hair look like straw, before she gave up and went home |

You're too much. (lol)
To quote from "Do you know the way to San Jose?" by Dion Warwick:
L.A. is a great big freeway,
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two they'll make you a star.
Weeks turn into years, how quick they pass,
And all the stars, that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas. |

That is a good laugh. Cheap place near the beach in California ? Are you sane ? Don't bother buying a car. You could just get a bus ticket in to hollywood. I imagine anyone can be a star within a week. Oh, I have a really nice beach place I could let you have for.......... |

It sounds like you have a rediculously unrealistic view of what it's like to live/work in Hollywood. First of all a high school play isn't worth squat, in fact the only thing that would get you is someone laughing in your face b/c it's so worthless. Second of all cheap, safe and near the beach? I don't think so beachfront property is primo real estate because of course everyone wants to live near the beach so you're charged a rediculous amount of money for the privelege of doing so. So unless you want to share a one bedroom apartment with four or five other people, or you have a crapload of money I would forget about that. Lastly the chances of you becoming a star by moving out there are about .00003%. You don't move to L.A. to become a star, I'm sorry but that's just a fantasy perpetuated by the old hollywood. It sounds to me like you're a bit too naieve to be ready to go make it on your own, let alone make it in LA. People "in the know" know that if you want to make it in LA, you get invited there by someone. My suggestion to you, if you really want to be an actor, is to go to college as a performing arts major, they can help prepare you for the harsh life of acting, get you in contact with some agents and get you better prepared in genearal to deal with life. I know you probobly want everything and you want it all right now but that's not how life works, it takes time and work, go to school, even if you don't make it to LA, you can still use that experience and education to work in the business on stage in NY or Minneapolis or wherever. Sorry if this sounded harsh but it's nothing compared to what you would hear out there in the real world. Some suggestions for colleges. Ithica in NY or Millikin in Illinois. Good luck. |

Thousands of people do that same thing and very very few make it. Good luck to you, but and odds are that you'll never be a star (it's just the math). |

You're joking, right?
It could take you 3 weeks to 15 years to become a star. It is totally unpredictable. Being "hot" seems to help.
There are very few cheap places to live near the beach. You might find a studio apt. for maybe $600 to $800 month, if you're very lucky.
I don't think the Senior class play will count much. They will not be impressed by that. |

Poor Icarus, doesn't know it was Paris' Friday 'joke' question, combining several of the dumbest questions from past weeks into a real super-dumb one.
Paris, I think this one should go in the Hall of Fame. |

Unfortunately, there is no set answer to that question. I moved to here from New Jersey about 3 years ago, and although I'm acting steadily, I'm nowhere near a star...I have a B.A. in Theater, graduated from a theater conservatory in London, and I've been acting in plays for over a decade...and it still hasn't happened yet.
That's the bad news.
The good news is that you could "make it" just like that! You're moving to a place where there are hundreds of auditions every day. If you stay on track and don't give up (yes, it may take a while), eventually you will find some work.
Some advice:
Get a job as soon as you can. There are lots of temp agencies, restaurants, and even offices that will be sympathetic to the fact that you want to be an actress. You may have to get two part-time jobs to make ends meet. You may be really tired for a few months (or years). But apartments, food, headshots, and gas here are EXPENSIVE.
Get headshots as soon as you can, and get good ones. Don't settle for any shot just because it's cheap. If you've got a birthday or something coming up, tell you friends and family you want them to donate money for your headshots. The better the shots, the fewer times you'll need to get new ones, which in the long run will save you money.
There are no cheap places near the beach. The closer you get to the beach, the more expensive the housing gets. I grew up in a beach town in New Jersey and wanted to be near the beach here. To me, the expense is not worth it.
However, Craig's List is your friend! They have everything from people looking for roommates (exercise caution, because some people are crazy!), to jobs, to furniture, to used cars. I suggest you go to www.craigslist.com as soon as you can.
I hope that helps. Good luck! |

Most people end up being waitresses. Not everyone makes it "BIG" in Hollywood. |

I think it takes about a week. But you must have a side kick or friend.
There needs to be a friend who doesn't make it. Usually they find a guy and get pregers. |
