Great fun and really cheap, I even got picked up by a really cute Canadian girl out of NY which made the whole Bus trip a great deal more fun. It is the Real America so you get a cross section of people but I never found it scary although arriving late into some destinations can leave you in a bad part of town. Completely recommend travelling Grey Hound and riding Canadian girls :-) |

I've travelled all over the U.S. MANY times by Greyhound- & found it to be a perfectly acceptable experience... Exactly HOW it could be "dangerous"- I can't imagine... And it certainly IS alot cheaper & less hassles than Driving is- or as Flying has become... AND, the "Dog" is pretty good at being "on time" too! So MAKE your Plans, and have a good trip! :) |

Just get on the bus and enjoy the ride to your destination because unless you are in a position to hire private transportation to get there you will have to deal with the public which will include many clean decent and upstanding citizen... |

Check to see if you have to switch to another bus or wait because this is where you may see trouble if it is in the middle of the night. I have been told that having a waiting period is dangerous at the bus station |

i traveled as a teen from Memphis to Shaw, MS. It was clean and they made frequent stops, so it took longer than if i had driven. Just watch your stuff and be cautious of the people around you an sit right behind the driver. |

It's less dangerous than riding in a car, where your chances of getting in an accident and horribly mangled are quite a lot higher. I rode the bus from Winnemucca, Nevada all the way to Toledo, OH. Don't expect any luxuries but if you want a simple and cheap way to travel, and aren't taking a lot of luggage with you, it's not bad at all. There are many more normal people than freaks and wackos. Not once on the entire ride did anyone bother me; everyone keeps to themselves, but if you want you can easily meet and talk to some interesting people. They stop often enough to let people stretch their legs, use the toilet, have a smoke and it's pretty much always at a service station, so you can buy what you need. In all, I would definitely use the bus. |

i have travelled greyhound, the creepiest people ride the bus. also alot of of the stops are in the middle of nowhere or in really bad parts of town. i had a problem with delays as well. not the worst way to travel, not really dangerous though. once you ride it you will see how it could be dangerous |

It's not dangerous, it's just because it is so cheap, you deal with low-class wackos. |

I went back and forth on a greyhound hundreds of time. The rid was 5 hour long, or its be 8 with a 3 hour delay in a city. But a big mall was right across the street so the wait wasnt really that bad. I usually slept. Put my purse behind my back, take 2 seats and lean against the window. However, i have to say you do met/see alot of interesting people. This girl (im pretty sure she was a girl) was chatting my ear off. She looked pretty butch for a girl and she was talking about how she had magical cats that would Meow chant and form wierd groups. And I had seen this one guy that I am pretty sure had Terets. He was sitting in the fetal position on the floor between his seat and the ones infront of him. He was mumbling under his breathe and occasionaly yell loud noises or words.
Haha but it really isnt a bad trip. I did alot when Iwas young and never had any problems with safety. |

I agree with the opinions of the majority here. I rode from Memphis to a small town in middle Tennessee, and it was CRAZY. Most of my fellow travelers seemed to be homeless, as all their worldly belongings were in garbage bags next to them, making me wonder how they could afford to ride the bus in the first place. My bus left at three in the morning, and was in the scariest place in downtown Memphis, which is one of the scarier places in the continental U.S., in my opinion. A crazy shirtless man came out of the bathroom with headphones on, singing "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits. So basically, yeah, it was interesting. If you don't scare easily, by all means, take the bus. It's safer than hitchhiking, or tying helium balloons to a lawn chair, but that's about it. |

not the most comfortable ride.. but they are cheap.
I havent heard about them being dangerous.. I dont see how a bus could be any more dangerous than any other form of roadway transportation either?
The bad thing is that greyhound buses stop at pretty much EVERY stop on the way.. even tiny little towns that you wouldnt even think would have a bus stop! This makes for a loooong trip.
ADDED:.. Ussually the "middle of nowhere" stops are not very long... 15-20 mins or so. The long delays are ussually in bigger cities. |

Depends on what kind of travel experience you're looking for!
I took the greyhound from Chicago to Philidelphia this spring. The buses were pretty clean, the stations were passably clean (some were better than others), and most of the greyhound personal were quite helpful. I did however experience one big delay becuase the bus I was on was late arriving, making me miss my second bus. An all night layover on the floor of a city bus station. Needless, to say, I didn't get any sleep.
I took the bus because for me it was cheaper than driving... so just keep in mind that those riding with you probably have similar reasons. Keep your wits about you and be smart about it, and you should do just fine. :) |

well the last time i rode on a greyhound bus, i think that the driver might have been drunk, b/c he kept on swevering the bus, and other people wer getting nauseous b/c it smelled so bad....but that was just one time..i gues it just kinda depends on the driver...if you get a good one, then you willbe fine, but ifyou dont...well now your screwed. |

Make sure you label your stuff, don't take too much crap on the bus with you, don't leave the bus stations when they stop for breaks, and don't get too friendly with fellow riders or give them personal information. The bus is only as dangerous as you want it to be. Just like you wouldn't sit at a city bus stop with your laptop out, listening to your IPOD with your wallet sitting on the bench next to you, you wouldn't do that at the bus station or on the bus. :) Don't put anything expensive in the suitcase you will "check" for placement on the bus - I have never had one search or stolen, but there is a first for everything. |

Look up Weird Al Yankovic's (sp?) video " Another one Rides the Bus" to see what it is like.
Words:
Another One Rides The Bus
by Al Yankovic
Lyrics:
Ridin' in a bus down the boulevard
And the place was pretty packed
Couldn't find a seat so I had to stand
With the perverts in the back
It was smellin' like a locker room
There was junk all over the floor
We're already packed in like sardines
But we're stoppin' to pick up more
Look out
Another one rides the bus
Another one rides the bus
And another comes on
And another comes on
Another one rides the bus
Hey
He's gonna sit by you
Another one rides the bus
There's a suitcase pokin' me in the ribs
There's an elbow in my ear
There's a smelly old bum standin' next to me
Hasn't showered in a year
Well, I think I'm missin' a contact lens
I think my wallet's gone
And I think this bus is stoppin' again
To let a couple more freaks get on
Look out
Another one rides the bus
Another one rides the bus
And another comes on
And another comes on
Another one rides the bus
Hey
He's gonna sit by you
Another one rides the bus
Yeah
Another one rides the bus
Another one rides the bus, ow
Another one rides the bus, hey, hey
Another one rides the bus, hey
The window doesn't open, and the fan is broke
And my face is turnin' blue
I haven't been in a crowd like this
Since I went to see The Who
Well, I should've got off a couple miles ago
But I couldn't get to the door
There isn't any room for me to breathe
Now we're gonna pick up more, yeah
Another one rides the bus
Another one rides the bus
And another comes on
And another comes on
Another one rides the bus
Hey
He's gonna sit by you
Another one rides the bus
No
No
Huh?
Yeah
Yeah |

I've taken one twice, one from Sacramento to Reno and another from Riverside to Phoenix. The first time I was traveling with someone, and had a distraction from how dirty some of the people traveling were, but the second time wasn't fun. I got on the bus and immediately felt the need to protect my stuff. It was an eight hour ride and I ended up falling asleep tangled in my luggage straps for peace of mind.
And there were a lot of single mothers with loud babies. But that was probably just my bad luck. |

I have made many trips on Greyhound and Trailways when I was a student. Well, the highways were not so crowded, so a crosssection of the population travelled by the bus. It was not a bad experience. The buses took a longer time than driving your own vehicles, because they have to make frequent stops and need to go in and out of a city since the depots are located in the central place. But it is possible, that now only those who cannot afford, or are homeless are majority of the passengers.
Gainesville and Tampa are not very far. So, if you are worried about unusual encounter, check the schedules(round trip) so that you could travel during day time. Travel lightly, dress simple and casual, keep a nice book/magazine to read (instead electronic items), so you don't attract attention of carrying anything worth stealing. See if you could keep minimum items in your wallet - just one credit card(leave the rest at home), if you are carrying cash, don't take out in public view. Keep a small amount separately so, you can reach out just that amount to purchase drinks or so. Even if you strike a friendly conversation, don't give out your full name(I am Bob, Dave .....only), address or work place. If you exercise these and similar behavior.
Remember, you are not flying executive class; so though most buses are clean, have realistic expectations and allow some space for infarction.
Enjoy the trip. |

I had a bad experience while traveling from Toledo, OH to Nashville, TN and back.
A lot of the people on the bus were dirty, stinky and I'm pretty sure the lady sitting next to me was on drugs. She asked me every five minutes if I had any cookies. Not kidding. On the way home, the man I was sitting next to reeked of alcohol and he didn't shut up the entire trip. The people who worked at the stations were rude and not helpful at all. Our trip home was cancelled because of a bad snowstorm, and instead of informing all of the passengers of what was going on, they let us sit on the bus for three hours, leaving us to wonder what was wrong. I tried to get my luggage off of the bus so I could go back to my boyfriend's house instead of staying in the dirty station and I had to ask THREE different people to open the hatch for me. One of them had the nerve to look and me and say, "That's not my job."
The only reason I would think it would be dangerous is because they do NOT do a security check on your bags. You don't know what kind of stuff people are bringing onto that bus.
I personally will never travel Greyhound again. The customer service is horrible. |

I haven't ridden on a greyhound in such a long time my opinion is probably not relevant, but here it is. While in the army (1964) I often rode the bus often from Seattle Washington to Portland, Oregon. I enjoyed it! Met several women . Never encountered any drunks, cannibals, smelly people or vampires. On the other side of this-- my wife tells me of a bad trip she had riding from Texas to California, but the driver handled the situation. |

I had to stand in the aisle one time for several hours because it was packed booked full; no body ever offered me a seat....
I got to listen to the two little old ladies talk about how they hadnt washed their hair in weeks...
it was funny, I was young so it was nt too much of a hardship...i just sat on my bag in the aisle... |

Ive ridden them quite a bit, never felt in any danger. People are right though, some of the passengers can be real winners. And the stops are way to frequent,in every God forsaken one horse town you can find. But the upside is unless you are driving, you cant beat the price. Don't know if it is still in effect, but it used to be if you purchased ticket at least seven days in advance,it costs less. But I'm not sure on that. |

This one time, I tried to ride a Greyhound Bus all the way to Japan to try some fresh sushi, but we kind of got stuck on the beach in California. Fortunately, there was a beached whale, and so the driver floored it and the whale swallowed the bus whole! A rescue team pushed it back into the water before we could escape. The whale must have been disoriented or something, because we ended up in the north pole, followed by a clan of penguins. The penguins were nice, but I had to get to Japan, and the driver had to do his job. We drove until we ran out of gas, landing on a cannibilistic society, fearing for our lives and realizing that there was no way we could really make it to Japan. We refueled as quickly as possible and decided to settle for some Florida orange juice in Tampa. Well, actually, this never really happened, but if you really want to ride on a Greyhound Bus, expect something just as chaotic, dangerous, and crazy as this story... |

please dont go Greyhound...its too small a bus for the ppl and their belongings plus children and no real room to sleep and ur neighrbor is soo close to you. i used to travel by Greyhound all the time until i haad my son.
I had a lady with a baby once sitting behind me and for 7hrs she cried and kicked and screamed...7hrs..7hrs. that was just one occassion..ive got major hell stories..dont get me startd on the bathroom.
Id say go by Amtrak Train, the cost is only about $20 more but well worth it. on the train u can walk around, eat in the dining cart. they even have sleeper cabs...they have a nice area to sit and view the scenery and very spacious seating. im afrid to fly so i only go by train.... |

If you do decide to travel greyhound I would advise not wearing your Sunday best. Instead wear real comfortable jeans, loose t-shirt, a ball cap or some other type of hat, a small pillow, and a mp3 player with extra batteries. I have found that Greyhound does their best keeping the bus clean from clutter but not at shampooing the seats. Wearing a hat will help you from suffering a possible greasy head rest. As from the other answers, there are frequent stops and the type of traveler is typically lower class. As for the safety part. Keep too the typical rules of travel. Keep you wallet in your front pocket (rap it with a rubber band if you wish), keep aware of your surroundings and if a stranger asks for anything, you don't have it. Its always your last smoke and your lighter just died. |

Make sure to take along some Lysol's,or a good hand sanitizers. Bring some headphones and some music, that makes the time go by much fast. And don't forget to pack some snacks, because the stops are quick, and not always available. |
