For anyone who has not met an American, or spent time working with one, going to school with one, or living with one, it is very easy to make judgments and cast opinions.
I think of all the people in the world, the average American would be quickest to help someone in need, provide a brutally honest answer to a question requiring an honest response, and would know with more clarity and certainty, what is right and what is wrong, and would not be afraid to be in the minority, if that meant they were standing up for what they believed in, or standing up for what is just.
Too many people around the world confuse American government with American people. Let's face it, EVERYONE's got a corrupt, self-serving government. Americans didn't invent that. And if you ask me, what our government does is saintly compared to the workings of government in Rome, Paris, Beijing and Moscow.
Americans are the greatest amalgamation of culture, history, races and religions the world has ever seen and will ever see. I think disgust with Americans eminates from disgust with oneself and a deep-seated envy for the ol' Red, White & Blue. |

I am American and would do almost anything to go to Canada, England, Australia or the Netherlands and change my citizenship.
A minority of amercans have taken over, politically... making the majority of us look like buffoons and crooks.
Our rights are taken away, we invade innocent countries, we are hated / laughed at by the rest of the world...mostly hated.
I can only hope to make it thru the rest of this presidents term without going mental and doing something extreme. |

I'm from Kuwait and have been living in Ireland. I have some American friends and I met a lot of them in Ireland. My American friends are wonderful people and I got along with them more than any others. But I feel that American people are a bit too enclosed within themselves in the US. Their information is almost entirely got from the media there. They are nice people but they need to be a little more open to the outside world. |

I'm American and I am sick of the "ugly" americans. These are the americans that travel across the sea and expect every one to speak English, and talk down, and brag about the U.S. They're also the people that complain about the government but don't vote. Basically the bad stereotype of Americans.... they're out there, and they make the rest of us look bad. I'm especially sick of all the French bashing thats going on. Get over it America! |

Americans are naive and arrogant. The worst thing is that they don't know about it. |

America is such a diversified place. There are about 300 million Americans, how can we be grouped in to one thing? Choose a type, and you can find a community of people like it. Now if you are speaking about the actions of our government, that is a different story! |

Americans are people that, as long as their financial life is in order, they won't make a mess about anything. The American president's approval rating is about 30% and nobody is doing anything to change that. Do you know why? because they can still afford the car's lease, the mortgage and Mc Donald's. Unluckily, Bush will finish his mandate. Americans should show him how wrong his politics are. American people should start talking loud and clear, and let the world listen. Act, do something, get off the couch and fight for your rights and interests, that have been destroyed by your elected president. |

I hate the fact that Americans think they are better than everyone else. Most don't know how to say "Please" and "Thank you". Why would you want to spend time with such rude people? They eat like pigs... close your mouth I don't want to see it as it goes down. And just one more thing. Just because it is all you can eat doesn't mean you have to put it all on one plate. |

Exactly what above average said. We are under a microscope and every move we make is scrutinized to no avail. We are far from perfect, but if other countries spent more time worrying about their own and less time trying to cut us down, the world just might be a better place... |

the most overentertained people on the planet, others are catching up, but people are so entertained, they don't follow whats going on in the rest of the world, or hold their government accountable for what they do. They're more intersted in what happened to people they don't know on a reality show (which is scripted) or to some stupid celebrity. Gore Vidal appropriately called it the United States of Amnesia. People have the attention span of a gnat. |

UK....... Hopefully most people in the UK will not judge a whole nation and have a single opinion on it (in fact, people anywhere should not do that!) However..... it is difficult sometimes and when you are far away (on a little island!) we are led by the media and large situations. I am a teacher of A Levels and my subjects often call on me to compare all sorts of cultures including the UK and USA. It's hard for some Brit's to see primary school children reciting the "I love America speech" every morning and not see it as brainwashing. It's hard to see so many tax dollars being spent on other peoples wars without looking back on the lack of financial aid given to it's own people after the hurricaine - without seeing racism and oil. (Although it is hard to see our prime minister without his head stuck up your presidents' beam end! And we spend our tax pounds on other people's wars, etc)
In sum, you are a massive nation full of good people (hopefully) but around the world you can be seen as a bit gung-ho, shoot first ask questions later, still quite racist and religious fanatical......... I am just saying it as we see it over here!! |
