Well think of the rudeness this way. We were the people who initated the Boston Tea Party. We tossed the tea in protest to the taxes being inflicted on us.
Since then, we don't take anyone's crappola. So a simple push can turn into a nasty look.
We want what we want and we know what we don't want. If we need to get somewhere, by gosh we'll run you off the road to get there.
I agree that I appreciate common courtesy. I live south of Boston. But when I start entering into the city, I get this sensation to be on guard. |

I've lived in Boston for about three and a half years and have found it to be less rude than many other large cities I've been to. I grew up in Washington DC and the people there are far more rude. And many of the other cities I've been to I have found the people to be quite rude as well (New Orleans, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami). |

Since people in Boston consider themselves to be better educated and more classy than the rest of the country, someone who uses illiterate expressions like "seriously not cool" is likely to be looked down upon. I'm not sure what your specific examples of rudeness are but once you know what they are being rude about, it is easy to politely cut them down to size. I am from Boston and went back for work a few years ago and got off the subway (I know I should have taken a taxi since the company was paying) and asked directions to the hotel. Some guy gave me the tough old "I wouldn;t walk there alone, if I were you". I looked at him and told him "If I can survive living in Caracas for five years, I think I can handle this podunk place". |

I think that directness is often interpreted as rudeness. Frankly, I'd take getting "flipped off" from a Bostonian in traffic over the passive aggressive style of, say, LA. At least you always know where you stand.... :) |

Don't blame Boston, rudeness is an epidemic up and down the coast. When I travel I'm always shocked at how rude New Yorkers and New Jersyites are....I won't even admit being from there. From Europe to Florida I hear how rude we New Yorkers, but I assure you its the city people who who have this affectation, not rural folks. I have given a few New Yorker/Bostonites hell in public for their inhumane behavior toward their fellow man. I have a tee shirt that says "UPSTATE, UPSTATE NEW YORK." I wear it when I go to Florida. |

New Englanders in general are not rude, they are just inclined not to do the phoney friendliness that is a part of most of the rest of America - the kind of bs where supermarket check out clerks are forced to smile and say "How are you today?" to every customer.
It is interesting that the rate of violent crime in New England is about the lowest in the country! |
