People are people everywhere they are. It's not just California.
I was once standed in N.Y. in 1984. I had my Army uniform on and the only thing I had were money orders. The Army only paid us in those at that time. Good luck finding someone to cash them if you don't live there. I was supposed to catch a plane at J.F.K. but the taxi driver wouldn't take a M.O.
I stopped at several places... banks, grocerie stores, other places. I racked up about $80 trying to cash a stupid M.O. to pay my tab. No one would help. I was screwed. I'll never go back to that unfriendly place again.

Some are, some aren't. Though I don't know the statistics, I would say there are probably many more people in California (Los Angeles) who have had plastic surgery. But what and who you see on TV isn't real.

Yes indeed, some people in California are shallow, and probably the same percentage of people in other states are shallow too.

Chez_DeVille
absolutely not.

the movie, aerospace, and microchip industries all started in California, not to mention major breakthroughs in science and medicine.

We have all kinds here. And I mean all.
California is so geographically large and diverse with so many people we reflect almost every other state and country.
There are areas where you'd think you were in Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Maryland, Ohio, Kansas, Canada, Mexico, you name it almost.
Not just landscape and geography but the attitudes and lifestyle of the residents are incredibly diverse.
If you are in an area you don't like, travel 100 to 1,200 miles in any direction and you'll find someting different. We have counties larger than many states and countries. Our elevation ranges from below sea level (Death Valley) to 13,000' (Sierra Nevada Mts.). In a single day, you can (if you hustle) surf waves, snow ski, off road it in the desert, eat at a posh urban restaraunt, gamble at a casino (yes, in CA).
In a single day you can meet punk rockers, "yuppies", hillbillies, Buffalo ranchers, bikers, Wall Street types, real cowboys, real farmers, Hollywood folks, old hippies, Ostrich ranchers, people from every country in the world (literally), you name it.

Have you been to California? If not, than stop generalizing.
Do you like the stereotypes about Kentucky?

tonalc1
Sure, there are shallow people everywhere.

Lioness
Naturally, the "Hollywood" environment has the tendency to attract certain kinds of people or condition the weak minded to fall into the pressure and act a certain way, but you not all people are followers of the culture.

Obviousman
Hi Stephanie,

There are shallow people everywhere. Movies and TV love to stereotype Californians as shallow and self-centered. To be sure, there are people like that here.

But consider this: There are Californians here (including myself) who take the time to answer questions here on Yahoo Answers, and our only compensation is the knowledge that we might have helped someone with our answers.

most people here are just average joe's trying to make a living.

It just happens there is a prominent minority that gets all the attention.

It all depends on what crowd you want to associate with.

copestir
There are shallow people everywhere. Just as there are creative people everywhere. Now as to depth of thought and establishing some existential meaning to the purpose of life; where do you place this question?
Hum? Shallow people just in California?

Can you define "shallow?"
If we go by the definition of this word, then asking this question makes YOU extremely shallow.

people in kentucky might be considered shallow to people say in an amazon tribe. here in LA, we're just way more spread out and in a hurry so it may come off as being shallow when we dont pay much attention to anything else or anyone else (no time). shallow people everywhere.

kelyi36
How do you know that there are more shallow people in CA than in KY if you don't live here?

I am so sick of this question. How many times does someone need to ask this? It just makes everyone mad.

CPT A.B.
Yes and the shallower they are the better chance that they'll be in show business.
