My faves are :

New Orleans - was there last month and it still rocks. amazing city and region. Stay in the French Quarter, which Katrina amazingly left untouched.

San Francisco - chilled vibe, wonderful. Go out to see some of the redwoods, take a drive over the Golden Gate bridge and find some.

New York - it's a must for a 1st time american visitor. See Liberty from the Statten Island ferry for free. Empire State Bldg, views are stunning.

Las Vegas - if you must, but don't stay too long, it's manic. Hotel New York New York is fun. Your room is in a skyscraper.

Some other visits -

Fort Worth, near Dallas - go see some cowboys

Visit some area where the Amish live, for a look at simplicity. Take out west from Philadelphia to somewhere like Lancaster, Pa and on to Intercourse - a real quaint old town! Old horse drawn buggies a plenty.

Don't forget Hawaii, a few hours flight from San Francisco, whilst you're there. The Big Island of Hawaii is quieter and beautiful. Volcano is still live there.

Good luck! I love the US, I'm sure you will too. Rob

I live just a 3 hour drive from Niagara Falls--and have seen them many times, yet I am still in awe of their power and beauty each time I visit there.I understand why they are one of the 7 Wonders of the world.
Have a great trip:)

I haven't traveled all around America like lucky you (CONGRATULATIONS) will get to, but this would be my list of must sees. The Statue of Liberty, all of the patriotic things in the New England states, Disney World (I'm going next month for the fifth time), The Great Smoky Mountain National Park (been there),Nashville (been there), Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, the Redwood Forest, Laguna Beach, Hollywood,Disneyland. I have a safe trip and GO WITH GOD!!!!!!!!

Lunar_Chick
Take time to visit New Orleans. Though Hurricane Katrina had an utterly devastating effect on a vast area, New Orleans is still a wonderul place to see and soak up the atmosphere. In particular, try to make it there during the annual Jazz Festival (held at the end of April/beginning of May).

I have visited the states many times and I could give you the
address's of some casino's around Michigan and Indiana..
Well, most of them really..lol
Anyway, Michigan is nice summer or winter,
You could try the UP and visit Hiawatha country,
St Ignace for the car show (september time)
Macinaw Island for the fort, and the Grand Hotel featured in the film 'Somewhere in time'
Soo Locks (Saint San Marie). Cross the Saint Mary river into Canada.
The UP of Michigan is often over looked but a real wilderness.
Anyway ..ENJOY THE TRIP...wherever you go.

Just a personal answer...I stayed with a friend of mine in Santa Monica last September, amongst the beauty of California I was really impressed with the Getty Villa Museum, Malibu

Dundee Blue Eyes
I spent a similar amount of time there and there are so many things to see and do you could spend 6 years and still have more things you'd like to experience. A few of my favourite things were:
The Grand Canyon (absolutely mindblowing)
Chicago (great city, go see a Cubs game)
San Francisco (Alcatraz is brilliant, food in Chinatown amazing)
Las Vegas (full of wackos but great fun)
Austin (great live music)
Drive up the Pacific Coast Highway
New York (visit Ground Zero for a humbling experience)
Rocky Mountains
Soak up the sun in Santa Barbara.

Personally, I'd stay away from the tourist tat in Florida and I wasn't particulary impressed with the rather sleazy Hollywood either.

nevada nomad
All of the above destinations are awesome to see. I live in Nevada, 400 miles North of Las Vegas, and Vegas has got a lot of attractions. Yellowstone National Park is another good one.
I have traveled through 36 states and I have seen beauty in all of them.
The Statue of Liberty is beautiful.
I liked Washington DC, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetary, Lincoln Memorial, John F. Kennedy Memorial, Washington Memorial, The Pentagon.
I loved the country through Tennesee, Kentucky and Virginia.
Pennsylvania, I got to see Mendonites and the Amish community. I also went to Hershey, Pennsylvania when the main factory for hershey's candies are. It is a nice little place.
There are so many beautiful places, and too many to name them all.
Welcome to the United States of America and enjoy your visit. Sincerely, Juanita

you absolutely must go up to the Top of the Rock!! Its the Rockefeller Centre in NY, also go see ground zero just cos everyone should go there if they can! Other than that Central Park, Bloomingdales, Empire State etc all need to be done.

The great thing about Manhattan is you could probably do all the above things in a day with not much trouble but try and spend more time in all of them! its quite close together and very easy to get around!!

Dont bother with the Statue of LIberty though its not special at all!!

Hope this helps and enjoy your time

I've gotta say the cliche things. Like the Grand Canyon. It's pretty amazing. You can't go to America without visiting Washington D.C.! I would also suggest going to Chicago, it's a great city... But save it for the summer, in the winter it can get cold! San Francisco is an amazing city also. From there you could drive down the coast of California (amazing views) and visit Hollywood. Everyone is going to say New York, but I wouldn't put it as a first priority. It's not that great of a city, in my opinion. It's pretty overrated, but I would still suggest going there considering it is one of the most important, popular cities in the world! The Colorado Rockies are great for skiing! And Philadelphia is historical and all if you're into that. That is cool that you are coming here! Have a lot of fun. Stop at my house and say hi (just kidding).

Montezuma Castle National Monument (Arizona)

This five-level, 20 room cliff dwelling nestled into a limestone recess high above Beaver Creek served as a "high-rise apartment building" for prehistoric Sinagua Indians over 600 years ago. It is one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America.

http://www.nps.gov/moca/

I've been here, you get to climb up to the castle and walk around inside of it. It's truly amazing.

Petrified Forest National Park (Arizona)

http://www.nps.gov/pefo/

With one of the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, multi-hued badlands of the Painted Desert, historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of 225 million year old fossils, this is a surprising land of scenic wonders and fascinating science.

This also in gorgeous and unlike anything else.

WELCOME TO THE GIANT SEQUOIA NATIONAL MONUMENT (California)
Your next adventure starts here! Year-round recreational opportunities abound on almost 550 miles of wild and scenic beauty. Located at the southern most end of the Sierra Nevada in Central California, the monument protects 38 groves of the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). These trees can tower 270 feet high and reach 30 feet in diameter. Our elevations range from 2,000 feet in the foothills to peaks over 10,000 feet offering spectacular views and adventure in giant redwood groves, granite monoliths, glacier-torn canyons, roaring rivers and lush flower-filled meadows.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/gsnm.html

I've always wanted to see these enormous trees....you might enjoy this one if you like nature.

Yellowstone National Park - Yellowstone National Park, ID,MT,WY (This looks amazing, but it's a massive caldera, you won't ever catch me here!)

http://www.nps.gov/yell/

Canyon de Chelly National Monument (Another awesome indian ruin-Arizona)

Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, the cultural resources of Canyon de Chelly include distinctive architecture, artifacts, and rock imagery while exhibiting remarkable preservation integrity that provides outstanding opportunities for study and contemplation. Canyon de Chelly also sustains a living community of Navajo people, who are connected to a landscape of great historical and spiritual significance. Canyon de Chelly is unique among National Park service units, as it is comprised entirely of Navajo Tribal Trust Land that remains home to the canyon community. NPS works in partnership with the Navajo Nation to manage park resources and sustain the living Navajo community.

Kartchner Caverns State Park (Southern AZ) Check if you need reservations

http://www.pr.state.az.us/Parks/parkhtml/kartchner.html

Jewel Cave National Monument - Custer, South Dakota

At 137 miles, Jewel Cave is the second longest cave in the world. It is filled with calcite crystals and other wonders that make up the "jewels" of Jewel Cave National Monument. The current length of Jewel Cave is: 137.80 miles. The latest exploration trip took place on: February 7, 2007.

http://www.nps.gov/jeca/

I would stay away from the touristy places for long and spend more time in the lesser known places. Have fun!

I agree with most of the previous answers You have to see the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas is so false it's really enjoyable, but only for a couple of days.

Death Valley and Yosemite National Park are also must sees, although the Park can get very busy in midsummer.

If you're travelling by car the do Highway one from LA to San Francisco, SF is a great City to explore.

As you can see I've done the West Coast a lot over the years but have not yet done the rest and I really envy you your six months.

Have a great time!!

Las Vegas is worth a visit, and surrounding areas such as Lake Mead and The Valley of Fire, Head on to Palm Springs and take the cable car up to the top of The San Jacinto mountains, Then head on up towards San Francisco, spend a few days there and then head East to Yosemite National Park and spend a few days at Curry Village.
Then head north to where ever the road takes you, where ever it is you will not be disappointed

Cheesy as it may sound - the old Route 66 offers some pretty interesting sights and leads through a variety of landscapes. You get everything from big cities like Chicago through rolling hills and Oklahoma red earth and farmland to the deserts of the Southwest. Along the way there are lots of pretty towns and places to visit. Easily done by Greyhound, by the way! Las Vegas is definitely worth the trip, and so is the Mall of America in St. Paul, Minnesota.

When I visited the US a few years ago I steered clear of all the big cities such as N.Y. and L.A and had the best times in the smaller towns off the beaten tracks. If this is your cup of tea, then travelling by Greyhound is unbeatable - you automatically meet new people every day and are transported effortlessly while being able to hop off the bus wherever you please. Pure bliss for someone who isn't too keen on meticulously planning every step ahead. ;o)
