hey americans

im a 21 year old university student from good old england.

i am looking to get away in the summer either to:

- los angeles california
- san fran. california
- new york city.

what one should i go to and why?

i will work and travel/explore while i am not working!

also, i am thinking of going out there with just one friend as going with just one friend we will more likely to make friends out there and do stuff with them. if we went 3+ we would probably stick in our group? what do you think? 2 people maximum or more?

thanks

New York City! Not just because i live right outside of NYC, but it is so amazing. You should go to like L.A. in the summer but go to NYC at Christmas time because it is amazing there at the holidays. There are all these lights and shows and you can even go ice skating at a huge ice skating rink. NYC is more of a winter trip ( in my opinion ). But L.A. i heard is awesome in the summer. MY aunt used to live there and she said there agree all these theme parks like Disneyland and you can walk around and maybe see a celebrity. All are good trips to go on Summer Vacation

Depends on how much money you have.

California has better beaches.

Depends on what you want to do and see.

New York has the most famous lady in the world the Statue of Liberty.

See what you like best and do it.

Friend of mine a brit did the Vanishing point run ( a bit slower though i think) from Denver to San fransisco... Had the time of his life rented an old wreck with some crazy yank kids and hit the road..

I think he got busted for vagrancy in the end and got deported but he had a ball.. Some redneck cop accused him of being a Nazi spy or something and busted him..

Still he loved it... I reckon if you go america you gotta do it like that.. Just going to some disneyland type tourist resort sucks..

My fav story he told me was he was buying some smoke of some guy in an desolate car park 4 am and the guy tried to rip him off so he went to kick his ***.. but he forgot that about yanks carrying guns.. apparently the guy was pretty cool about it though.. Threw his cash back at him and said "you can keep that as a souvenier"

Anyway i've only been to Louisiana myself Baton Rouge that place sucked man..

i've travelled europe with a group of 4 and with one friend.. Just two and you seem to get under each others skin a bit after a while.. i'd say 3 or 4 is spot on personally and its not initimidating a group to other people so you can make friends.. quite easily... Man some good tiem memories flooding back now... Naked night surfing with Spanish chics after some mad festival.

I would choose San Francisco for sure! There's so much to see within just a few hours drive of the city! (Yosemite, Big Sur, etc.) Plus it's not quite as huge of a city as LA or NY so you'll be able to avoid the hustle/bustle a little more. I have never been to NYC before, but from what I've heard I wouldn't ever want to live there. But yeah definitely go with San Francisco, you won't regret it!

New York City, it's the city that never sleeps!

New York City is a great place to go, but it is best, in my opinion, to go during the months of September-October. In the summer it gets very hot and humid and somewhat unpleasant. The sights are great to see - I love Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, however if you want a place with great weather, NYC may not be the ideal area.

San Fran is lovely...truly that is the word to describe it. The sights, again, are wonderful, but sometimes it can get chilly. While during the day it's fine, at night there will be wind. Nevertheless, it's a great place to stay.

Los Angeles...ah what to say. I LOVE IT! The nightlife is great and so is the daytime. It can get hot, but there is the ocean. Now, if you went down to LA, be advised you need transportation [car, taxi...taxi's are pretty steep though], but there are places to see and go to. You can always drive down to Redondo Beach, Laguna Beach, Newport, Manhattan Beach, etc. It's very nice in those areas, particularly if you want to swim and see some beautiful natural areas.

My personal advise to you would be San Diego. Although it isn't on your list of options it is a great, great place to stay. The weather is perfect - not hot, not cold. The nights are very nice and the beaches are wonderful compared to the LA ones. Most of the people I know from LA love San Diego and think of it as a vacation spot. It is also very close to Mexico, so if you feel the need to kill two birds with one stone, you can. There is a very large Persian population, so you will be able to go to different restaurants and areas with great cultural backgrounds.

Wherever you go, as long as you have a buddy or two, you'll be fine. You would be able to stick in your group, there isn't a limit. Just make sure you have someone to go with.

definetly l.a. new york is too congested too many tourists recommend atlantic city new jersey for the east coast

heeehee.. i live in san franciso. (; it has some nice stores and stuff. I've been to LA alot. it is really cool cause you can see alot of people there. and there are lots of places to go. and i've never been to new york, so i don't know lol.

but i think LA would be cool for you(:

NYC. I've been to LA, it's very nice, but there's no history there. You're not going to get any real experience there. San Fran, same deal. NYC has the richest culture of the whole world. There are MANY historic sites, museums, landmarks, etc.. It has an amazing nightlife as well. There is always something to do, so you are not going to have to worry about your favorite spot closing while you're working. You are also close to many other places that are out of the city, so you'll be able to get a good feel for this country. I grew up in NYC, trust me, it's where you want to be.

As far as the people you go with, I agree, don't go alone. If you go with someone, 1 or two people tops, if you're looking to make friends.

Good Luck!!

Super Dave
i'd say san francisco. ny is tooo big for one who does not no enough about the country they are in. san francisco is beautiful and has alot to do.

new york's pretty tight. there's a lot of stuff to do there and it's fun.

los angeles is alright. kind of sketchy in some parts.

san francisco is tight too. fantastic culture and graffiti. too bad it's incredibly gay

one friend might be good, but you guys might get sick of each other. but if you go in a larger group, someone might feel left out and end up getting picked on. i'd stick with you an another person.

also, you should look into places that aren't stereotypical places to visit in America. How about Portland, Oregon(I'm from here!)? Seattle, Washington? Boston? Philadelphia? Palm Springs? Tampa Bay? Alright... those are kind of stereotypical, but they're the best i can do. =]

hope this helps!

If I was young enough again I would choose new york city it never sleeps and something is always going on take as many friends as you can safety in numbers and I hope you have money

Digital Age
You have the right idea. I have met tourists who come in groups and it is like they become a gang. If you go with one friend, you are more likely to meet people and make friends. Of course if you went by yourself, you would really do a lot of that, but at the risk of feeling lonely as well. Nobody likes to feel lonely and alone, especially when they are in strange surroundings. So you have the right idea about taking a friend.
Los Angeles has Hollywood, and Rodeo Drive, but other than that, it is a big, dirty urban city.
San Francisco is cleaner than Los Angeles. It is an all around nice place to visit.
NYC is a lot cleaner than it used to be. But it is the largest city in the world and it can be overwhelming....
however, I am very familiar with NYC and I can tell you that you will enjoy it if you like to go for long walks. NY has the best restaurants in the world. Even the cheapo bargain restaurants serve good-tasting food.
Also, I can tell you that if you sleep in a motel on the outskirts of NYC you will get a cheap rate...then use a rental car to get into NYC by day, or ride the train. Bring walking shoes or sneakers because you will walk a lot! And, get in shape because New Yorkers walk fast! They walk down the street like they are in a race! NY has expensive nightspots though...the cover charge, the price of drinks...it is very expensive to party in NYC. Bring a lot of dough with you.

sssamkay
New York will be best to get around in without public transportation. Depending on your length of stay, you could also hit up Boston or Washington, D.C. by train.

San Fran is beautiful, but for both of the California locations, you'll probably need a car if you really want to explore.

My vote is probably for NYC, but California has scenery that is hard to beat.

The size of your group would matter if you do need to rent a car, not if you're all taking metro.
