What do I think will happen? One of three things: Jail, sex slave, or dead. All the pimps and pervs hang out just waiting for naive girls just like you. They're EASY to spot coming off the plane or bus. Sure, they'll be nice at first, offering you a place to stay for "free". But then you find out that everything has it's price. They'll get you drunk or high, take some pictures, and it goes downhill from there. You're trapped. Nowhere to go but down.
One aspect of Hollywood since the 1960s has been its attractiveness for desperate runaways. Every year, hundreds of runaway adolescents leave their homes across North America and flock to Hollywood hoping to become movie stars. They soon discover that they have extremely slim chances of competing against professionally trained actors. Many of them end up sinking into homelessness, which is a problem in Hollywood for adults as well as youth. Some return home, while others linger in Hollywood and join the prostitutes and panhandlers lining its boulevards; others go to Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles; and yet others end up in the large pornography industry in the San Fernando Valley.
Perhaps they don't teach math where you go to school. Let's do the math, shall we?
Coming to Socal out of HS, you'll make minimum wage, which is currently $8 per hour. If you are lucky enough to get 40 hours per week, that's 320 per week, or $1280 gross per month. And that's BEFORE taxes. Take home is probably $910.
Now it's a hard economic fact that you should spend around 1/3 of your salary on rent or mortgage. One third of $910 is about $300, which is what you can afford.
However, the average rent for a studio/bachelor/single apartment is about $1000, and a 1BR is about $1200. In order to afford that, you need to make at least $3000 per month.
Looks like you're a little short. |

You need a visa to get in. Without this, you have no chance. |

You may get exploited?! Either that or you'll get very hungry and want to go home again. |

Why would you go to LA its a big city and im guessing you don't know the place or anyone there as you are asking us .You are only 18 and prob don't have that much money or a job set up what are you trying to get yourself into LA IS A DUMP |

You would not be allowed to enter the country. If you made it here the Immigration Authorities would ESCORT you onto the next plane back to the U.K. So don't waste you money coming here. |

I'm worried about you! Running away will not fix your life! However....
if you do end up in LA look for a youth hostel right away. You will not want to be on the street alone at night. Its a big dangerous city. You will have a really hard time getting a job without a green card, too.
Whatever is going on in your life right now, being homeless and jobless in a foreign country will only make your life harder.
Good luck to you in whatever you choose. |

First, you need a work permit to come, and yes, you WILL need to work to survive here.
Young people who come here without money or a plan all too often end up on the streets, and it is not a pretty sight. Some are literally sold into slavery. I know this sounds hysterical and extreme, but it has happened, especially on the streets of Hollywood, where kids think all is well, but it is not. Predators are there just looking for young people in your basic position, and in they come. You yourself used the word naive, and they will exploit that in a minute.
The better plan is to look into yourself and figure out what about your life is wrong and solve it there while you are home. Spend your time getting your education and excellent job preparation, then arrive in LA later, triumphant! And yes, LA can be great when you are ready, but now you are not.
Advice from someone who knows... |

I would say to just do it. You will never have this chance again. Los Angeles is not as bad as people say it is. The only thing that is expensive is where you are going to live. You need to plan it out.
Where you want to be?
- Los Angeles is very big, there are good areas and bad ones.
Why are you moving?
- Just becuase you have a boring life is not a good reason. For most people who live in LA. The city is just like any other city. You might be dissapointed if you expect to be like what you see on tv.
You just need more planning and since the economy is kinda bad, you might find it harder than ussual to get a job. |

is that LA as in Los Angeles or LA as in Little 'Ampton, as Little 'Ampton is quite cold and boring this time of the year |

First, you should have a plan. Coming to L.A. for new experiences is very cool, but you really do need to prepare for this. You will need to be able to support yourself unless you have trust fund you can get cash from and not work. You may consider working as an au pair or something similar. Look for an agency that will help do everything legally. As far as being close to the airport. It's either high rise hotel or dodgy working class neighborhood. Not a place to be hanging around for too long.
Come over and do the tourist thing first, stay at a youth hostel in Santa Monica and just have a good time and get a real good feel for the place. If you like it, then makes planes to come over and stay awhile. |

Unless you have proof you will be going back to the UK on a specific date, you will not get past US Customs and Immigration. To move here, you have to immigrate and to do that you have to either marry a US citizen or have such a high level of skill a company will sponsor you. However, employer based immigration can take several years and you have to either be famous or have a university degree.
Frustrated teenagers, we have enough of.

I also thought of that! But you'll need a lot of money. Im from Denmark, and yes I also want more sun and fun. Here in DK it costs about 8000 danish kroner / 934 pounds for the next summer. But that's without hotel or something like that, just the flight. People say that you must have a car over there to get around because he public transportation is bad.
But then again. It depends on what you expect from your visit. If you just go for the sun and weather, move to Spain. It's so easy now in the EU. The rules are that your education is of same status in all the EU countries. It means that you'll get the same job here than you'll get in Spain. (Same possibilities). |

Sit down and think about what it is you're running from.
If you can't think of a Solution to make things better and you still want to run,run to India. The monasteries will let you stay there for free and they will also feed you.In return, you will be asked to do simple jobs like brushing up,feed the dog.
You will be safe and well looked after.
There's a lovely Monastery in Dharamasala close to the Dalai Lamas monastery. You don't have to be religious/buddhist to stay at any of them.
You will need a visa
Good Luck |

I had a friend come out from London with stars in her eyes. After 1 week she was fed up with the mexicans, terrible transit, cars, and selfishness. She would have swam back to the u.k. if she could of figured out how to get to the ocean on the metro. I would have swam back with her too if I wasn't trapped in a job at the time.
If you want to flee your current life to the U.S., try San Francisco. L.A. ain't as cool and everyone makes it out to be. |

Why does everybody come to LA? It sucks. It can be quite dangerous and its so entertainment oriented everyone is pretentious and out for themselves in the end. A lot of them are phonies and I can't wait to leave it all behind me. |

oh jeez... PLEASE do not do that- first of all ... it's not L.A. it's HELL-A....are you nuts? there are plenty overpriced and under par accommodations, as well as plenty of predatory males who would be more than happy to school you in hard knocks, if that's the kind of thing you are going for..Plus you need a visa, money.. you can't just end up over here and expect everything to be fluffy and nice..so do yourself a favor and go to university in your own country and get an education.. Sorry if you think this is a harsh response - it's nothing compared to what you will find if you run away to a country that isn't going to be so kind to you |

You'll need a cart load of money. Everything in LA is about three times as much as anywhere else. Which means hotels, motels, small houses, etc. There are plenty of accommodations, but there is no guarantee you'll get a room without a reservation. Everything in LA is pretty far apart and the traffic is mad in the LA area especially- Cabs are expensive to take, and in the traffic they will jack up the price. LAX is huge (it has a hotel of it's own of course), and very busy-- you would have to get a rental car at Hertz (cheapest bet) and have them pick you up at the airport.
Seriously, It would be exciting, it's very beautiful there. But probably not worthwhile unless you have either a bunch of money or someone to stay with.

LA is very expensive. I would suggest you try to line up a job before you get here. There are plenty of hotels near the airport but its not the best place to be. Los Angeles, is VERy vEry big. So you may want to figure out what area you want to live in. If you are trying to be an actress, don't move to Hollywood. Pasadena is one of the nicesest places close to LA
Consider another state. Really. The states that aren't too expensive to live in are Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and Alabama. New York is very fast paced. Figure out what environment you want to live in. Slow paced versus fast. |

Bit far and expensive to just go to on a whim, maybe you should go to Thailand? You could get a job teaching English - You dont need qualifications, its hot and sunny and loads cheaper.
Or...... You could sort out your life back home. |
