New York is Great! Have fun!

Exercise the same caution as you would in any other big city.

in Manhattan, which is where you will most likely be, it is quite safe during daytime hours and so is most of it at night. Tourism is a big industry. You would not be likely to wander into any unsafe areas unless you were looking for trouble. Enjoy your trip!

Why don't you try mentioning what part of New York you're visiting (e.g. the Upper West Side, or Astoria in Queens, etc), and you'll get a more helpful answer.

I lived in New York City for four years, and as I'm sure most people will tell you, it's a pretty safe city. It's wise to be careful, just as you would in any other big city in the U.S., but New York's crime-afflicted days are long behind it.

You will be fine, the amazing thing about New York is that no one puts up with anyone elses BS anymore, so, when you are walking around here and someone is acting like an idiot, chances are someone will do something about it, whether they call the police or kick the persons but. Either way, you will be fine. have fun and enjoy the greatest city on the planet!

My friend, new york city is very safe. In the last 10 years, this city as seen the lowest crime rate since the 1963, and I believe it will remain that way for years to come. That's why this city has been doubed the "Safest Big City in America."

You lucky thing. We have just returned from New York last weekend and it's my third visit. I have never once felt unsafe on the streets, even late at night. To be honest I think it is one of the safest places I have ever visited. There is a high police presence on the streets and I would say that the majority of people are tourists and the rest are natives. The street sellers might shout to get your attention but they don't hassle you much and a shake of the head and they leave you alone. Even walking down back streets felt ok, there is just a great atmosphere there. Like anywhere in the world take precautions, don't have loads of valuables on show, don't leave your handbag open, etc etc. Have fun and enjoy.

For the most part, this city is quite safe, the safest big city in the U.S. Stick to populated places, that's just about the best advice I can give. If you're in a place and it feels desolate and unsafe, trust your instinct. Really, there aren't too many places to avoid. Just take the same precautions you'd take anywhere else: always walk with a purpose, don't leave valuables hanging out, things like that.

Now, you say it's "soon," which is right around Christmas, so I'll give you a couple of tips here; this city is truly electric around this time of year, and it's beautiful! However, it is EXTREMELY crowded, especially in midtown. I went into Manhattan all day on Saturday, and was reminded of just how crowded it can get. At times, there was simply NO room to maneuver on the sidewalks. Just be patient and things will move along just fine. Another precaution in the crowds is to keep valuables in an inside pocket; crowds are a perfect place for pickpockets to make a living. Don't give them that chance, that's all; walk with your hands in your pockets, or simply have all your stuff in an inside pocket.

I've never been victimized, and it's generally safe, but it can happen. Be street-smart in the crowds, and you'll have a good time shuffling along. Really, I do find that strangely fun. It's an adventure.

Enjoy your trip, I know you will!

EDIT: Forget about ignorant posters who tell you to avoid Queens and Harlem. Harlem is up and coming, and there's very nice stuff there. Queens has a population greater than the whole state of South Dakota in it, so it's impossible to to make any blanket generalizations about it. I feel perfectly safe in most parts of Queens, living there all my life. Some parts of Queens are among the nicest in all of NYC. Be careful of blanket statements such as that.

New York is now now safest large city in the USA.

Yes, much safer than San Diego (NYC crime rate is 60% of SD) who is in second place,

New york has alot of Police & is actually very safe.Stay out of parts of the Bronx. And travel in groups in nighttime if you are a female or smaller man.

I was in New York last month, felt perfectly safe, I was in Manhattan, no problems, I would say to avoid Queens and Harlem, if you're staying in Manhattan, don't worry, go and enjoy.

Here are some great tips from about.com... And they are true, like avoiding eye contact with panhandlers so they will leave you be, and simply saying no. Keep Jewelry hidden and tucked away. Carry a purse you can sling over your neck and shoulder and tuck it beneath your coat. The city can be dangerous, but for the most part it is pretty safe for visitors. Call a tour guide company and ask for some hot spots and areas to avoid...
