I had been in both places. I love San Francisco! it you are just out for a vacation, then this is one of the best. However, if you are going to try your luck in this city. Think about it a thousand times. The tax is very high. Parking and rental are very expensive. Climate is nice. Be careful with the streets, they go up and down! Better take the BART when going to nearby places. Residents prefers taking the bus than bringing their cars downtown since parking is expensive. i love the weather here! I stayed here from November to December in 2005. Means of transportation is better here than any other city in California. There are Muni Buses everywhere and BART going to the Contra Costa County ( Martinez, Concord, Hayward, Antioch, etc)
If you had initially started with San Francisco then you go to LA, you will definitely feel the extreme heat! Traffic is really worst. I hate dropping by this area specially during the springbreaks wherein most families goes to the themeparks. I would rather choose San Diego or Camarillo than living in LA. For families on vacation, you will definitely love Disneyland, Hollywood, Universal Studios, California Adventure, Knotts Berry Farm, etc.

Yes, very different both in location with LA being in southern California and San Francisco being in northern California and also in attitude with LA and the south being more conservative and SF being more liberal. Now getting between the two is another matter with great Amtrak service and a very good new bus service called Megabus providing low cost fast transportation along that route.

San Francisco is in northern California. It is cold, rainy and beautiful.

Los Angeles is in southern California. It is warm sunny and ugly.

tonalc1
Yes, one is in the north, the other in the south, about 450 miles apart.

I guess you're not asking about exact location, so maybe you mean in ambiance, personality, lifestyle, etc. Either way, the answer is 'yes' they are 2 totally different places.

Judy
Uh..yeah? I'm not sure how you'd even get the 2 confused.

Yes, one has eye appeal, and the other doesn't. But both have
a high cost of living factor. Especially SFrancisco.
