Should we move back to new orleans?

My husband will be leaving the military very soon. we want to move back, but we disagree on how it should be done. I think it would be better if we moved down before trying to get jobs, because we would be able to physically meet with potential employers. He says we should get the jobs first. he is in Engineering and I am a Certified Medical Assistant. we have both been looking for jobs online and i actually got a call back but when i said i couldn't be there for another month or so they lost interest. what should we do? any info would be very much appreciated. Thanks

I doubt you will have any problem getting a job as the medical field is in dire need of help.

Engineering is bit tougher as many companies have moved to other cities Houston etc. I suggest you try finding a job for him first as he will be harder to place.

you don't want to both be without a paycheck at the same time.

have you looked at http://www.ochsner.org/

or east Jefferson Hospital?

Come back to New Orleans! Keep checking sites like nola.com and batonrougejobs.com (they have listings in New Orleans too)

Good luck!

i think you should do a mix of both. apply for a lot of jobs now, then go down there and apply for jobs in person. but i think you should move back to new orleans seeing as how you both clearly want to. best of luck :)

If you have a lot of money saved you should probably move first.Seems less stressful to me.

You should come back to New Orleans and then find a job. Trying to find a job and not living here (I live near New Orleans) will be difficult. Where are the two of you living....anyway it doesn't matter just get your butts back down here!

Well, to make the move more comfortable and stable, one of you should have a position when you get there. However, as you apply for jobs and get return calls, ask if you can do a phone interview first and if you need to fly down (I know it costs money but it will be worth it for you to secure a good position in our suffering economy... jobs may not be as abundant as you would hope) for a second interview. Many companies understand the re-location process and are willing to offer an over the phone interview for qualified potential employees. I hope that the move works well for you... and salute your husband and all of his efforts supporting our country... our soldiers are our angels (reguardless of stance on war).

Your jobs are very marketable, and as such, IF you have a place to go to as a base camp then I wouldn't worry about going back without a job beforehand.
It would be a bit different if the two of you were minimal skilled.

from what i hear the whole city is slowly rebuilding and coming back to life. not nearly as fruitfal as it should be but making progress. i would say do one of each. as long as one of you has a job before you get there you have a better chance of making it rather that picking up and moving with no jobs! Engineering is more giving of time. ( i work for an engineering firm) so have him contact a few firms and see if he can get 2 or more interviews in the same week and come back. then as you pack get ready and find a place you both can go back and then you can start interviewing and atleast there will be an income.

we have an office in NO and i hear that things are far from great so maybe you could try moving to a surrounding area. Good Luck!

your recent experience is why your husband is suggesting you move there first. It is really difficult finding a position willing to wait until you are able to move. You need to be in a position to start right away when you apply. I know it is difficult and a bit scary, but I have always done it successfully. Good luck to you both.

If you can I would send one to live down there now. You should go or he should (if possible) I understand not everyone can do this but you are both right and both wrong. I would move there so they know your serious but then again, once you move all the way back there, you cant be sure that it will be a solid lead. I wish you good fortune and I am sure you and yours will make it to your destination. :)

PS: By wrong I dont mean that in a bad way so please dont take offense. :)

NOLA guy
It is always best to have a job lined up before you move somwhere. It might not be so important if your husband is retiring from the military and you will have money coming in after he seperates from the service.

The US Army Corps of Engineers (New Orleans District) is continuously recruiting for engineers. If your husband is in the military he should get extra consideration for USACE jopbs. The USACE was paying a large signing bonus and probably still is. Your husband should also look for other federal jobs in NOLA as his military service + time will be of benefit while applying.

You also should look at federal, state, and local government jobs.

There are shortages in the legal, medical, retail, and service fields, plus most trades.

Good luck!

If he is an engineer and you are a medical assistant, you shouldn't have any trouble getting a job in or around New Orleans.
I guess it would depend on if you have enough money to live on for a couple of months while you are unemployed. It is expensive to move and get settled, but it's also expensive to travel to NO to go on job interviews.
Maybe you could compromise - keep looking and when one of you gets a job, then you could move.

me
It depends on how stable finances are presently, who is the bread winner and max time you all can go with no income in case there is no feed back right away. It would be nice to pack up and move right away, but weigh your options very carefully. I am an Engineer and jobs aren't always readily accessible when needed. I went almost a year between jobs before I found the great job I have now. With that being said, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I would establish a more stable foundation before moving. You will be taken a risk of losing your peace if you make a hasty move.
