Stuck between houston,tx and san francisco,ca.? |
i am 21 years old, non-college graduate, married, with a daughter. my husband is of the same age and a non-college graduate as well. we really want to live in a beautiful city like san francisco. unfortunately, i don't know if it's practical for us at this point because of the lack of money and no college degree for a high professional job. houston, tx is another option because i know it is one of the most affordable places. would it be possible for us to live in san francisco? or would houston be a better option? i don't plan on living in downtown houston. i would like to live in a safe area (for my child) that is near to downtown houston. |

San Francisco is very expensive to live in. You should try Houston, it is cheaper and not that bad. Just need to get into a good neighbourhood and always remember to check the school districts before moving into an area. Pearland is nice even thought it is a bit far from downtown and its school district I think it is alright. Same with Clearlake. Good luck to you! |

This is a no brainer for me. I lived in San fran and I have lived in Houston---At one time I lived in a 2800 sq foot townhome in Montrose (innerloop Houston) and my mortage was about $2800--
Now, I also lived in San Fran and lived in a 1000 sq foot condo near Berkley and the RENT was about $3000.
It is NOT practical, especially since neither one of you havea college degree--people there are VERY educated, most have masters degrees, and the cost of living is one of the most expensive in the US
Houston has a great job market, some great public schools, and the housing costs are good if you want to live in the suburbs.
Save yourself a lot of headahe and heartache and call Houston your home, you can move to your dream city when you have some more cash and you have better careers.
beleive me I KNOW! |

have you ever checked out housing prices in san francisco?
i mean, no, REALLY check it out
look at some websites like craigslist or rent.com for a 1/1 or a 2/1 and see what you come up with
i dont think it will be as practical as houston. if you want to live by the pacific, atleast move up north in washington or oregon, or go across the other coast.. |

I can only tell you that the cost of living in Houston is much cheaper than San Francisco |

Cost of living in San Francisco is horrendously high compared to Houston. At times, you may not believe the price difference in a lot of things.
I know someone who was moved by the employer from SFO to Houston. He could not believe that extra $$$ that he had at the end of every month.
Just imagine this ... there house in Houston was basically the same as there house in SFO -- 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and 2-car garage.
Price difference? In SFO, it was one-something million while in Houston, it was "only" $300,000. Right there and then, there was substantial savings in mortgage payments alone.
And gas prices? The regular unleaded in SFO is more expensive than the premium unleaded in Houston.
I guess these two examples are more than enough.
BTW, the weather in Frisco is much, much better than Houston's. Traffic is probably comparable although there are more cars in my estimation. |

i think you should go with houston, it may not be as nice as living in san fransico, but atleast you wont be indebt (the cost of just living in CA is alot higher too), and if you save your money, maybe you'll eventually be able to move to CA. i have a cousin who live in houston, she likes livng there and i love visiting them there. |

Houston!!! But stay away from the ghetto!!!!! |

Just to let you know, Downtown Houston has the least crime in the city. Don't move into one of the wards and stay out of the Heights and Montrose, although there are very nice places there, it would be better to raise a family somewhere else. I still don't know why Houston though, instead of say Portland, Denver or another city that is both beautiful and affordable. |

DO NOT MOVE TO SAN FRANCISCO!! you will not be able to afford it! it is like 5 times as expensive as Houston! and more annoying! I believe Houston is the better option since you do not have a college degree. You could come to Houston and go to college here and then later move out to San Francisco but I'm sure once you move to Houston you will fall in love with the city and not want to leave! Good Luck:) |

I would say it is impractical for two non-degreed people to want to live in such an expensive city as San Francisco.
Houston is affordable, has jobs galore throughout the spectrum of work, and we also have a number of scholls should you wish to complete an education in the future. In addition, forget "near to downtown". Areas are either too expensive or too crime-ridden, depending on where you look. Consider a northern or western suburb. |

Texas Happy Horn

Killeen, Round Rock, Austin, Texas: Killeen has the lowest average home price in any market in the nation while still maintaining quality. Round Rock and Austin have seen incredible job growth and very stable home prices despite the downturn nationwide. Jobs continue to grow here -- a factor for keeping inventory low and prices stable.

Well I'm only 1 year older then you guys and me and my hubby Sold our home in CA to move to San Antonio. San Fran is a very expensive. It's higher then LA prices. If you both have a good paying job making the minium of $10,000 a month to survive for all of you. I've been to houston very nice at least they have more things then san antonio. The homes in houston are very nice. You could get a brand new house for about $200,000 for a 1700sqft. Good luck |
