Your best bet is to http://visit www.visitdetroit.com and see what is going on when you will be here.

There will be info there about everythign you are looking for including tours through Indian Village and the Boston Edison area. Also look for info on the underground railroad (continues through Canada), Fort Wayne, Charles H Wright Musuem.

Detroit is a safe city. Do not listen to these people who continue to speak bad about this city.

Nevertheless, you have already mentioned several great locations to visit. In addition to Kensington, there are additional Metro Parks with Beaches, so depending on where you are, there are many options. Many of these Metro Parks have wave pools and are peaceful, relaxing and family friendly.

As for some of the other places to visit, in addition to The Henry Ford that you mention, you can tour the mansion of Henry Ford (Fairlane). There are also several cultural museums in Detroit. They are located pretty close to each other near Wayne State University. These museums include the Detroit Institute of Art, African American Museum, and the Detroit Science Center. There are others as well.

If you get time to travel to Ann Arbor, there are more museums associated with the University of Michigan.

In addition, there are three casinos in Detroit and all have wonderful restaurants with them. You can also try to catch a baseball game at Comerica Park, but the Tigers will not be back in town after today until August.

Downtown also has a Hard Rock Cafe and the Hockeytown Cafe. Both are great places to go and hand out.

There are a lot of options, so please enjoy yourself.

I hate it when people who obviously don't live anywhere near the city talk about how terrible it is. If you don't live here, then you really shouldn't assume that you know what it's like.

Downtown is actually a great place to go and much safer than it used to be even just 5 years ago. Of course, as with any big city, there are areas that you don't want to venture into. But if you stay along the main drags downtown (which is where everything you want to see is anyhow), it's highly doubtful you'll run into any trouble. They've really been trying hard to fix things up and attract a different sort of crowd. Every weekend it seems there is a big festival going on in the summer. Campus Martius is a great little area to visit. Catching a Tigers game and going to grab a drink at Cheli's, Hockeytown or Town Pump is always a blast. The Detroit Institute of Arts has been going under some major rennovations but is still a wonderful place to walk through. So is the science museum with the huge IMAX dome. Down by Hart Plaza on the water they do boat tours and talk about all of Detroit's history as well.

Check out Ann Arbor if you get a chance...great college town with tons of cool stuff to see and do.

as you travel west, check out Irish Hills area, real nice with parks and artisan wells!

south, many many metro parks, buy a year pass as it will allow you to get in all state and metro parks throughout the state of MIch.

more south, sterling state park has a beautiful nature trail and an OK beach,dogs are welcome!!

I recommend that you allow a day to visit Greenfield Village. It is really a wonderful place. The Detroit Zoo (located north of the city in Royal Oak) is also worth a visit. Don't miss the Butterfly garden. Within the cultural center are the science, art and historical museums. I highly recommend a visit to the Historical Museum. Be sure to visit the "streets of old Detroit". Belle Isle is a great island park. On the south side you can look across to Canada. If you have appropriate travel documents take a visit to Windsor (south of Detroit). If you want to take a trip about 90 minutes north of Detroit you can visit Frankenmuth where they have restaurants known for their chicken dinners (very tasty) and Bronner's, which is a Christmas store, and may actually be the largest one in the world. It's huge.

Dont swim at Kensington Metro Park the water is disgusting. If you are looking for a place to swim try Spring Mill Pond ( same exit off 96 as Kensington).

I had a friend who lives in Windsor Ontario, which is safer than Detroit, and is probably a better base from which to visit the area... Much of what used to be great in Detroit is unfortunately GONE, but Belle Isle and Boblo Isle are still there, (the Detroit river is rife with Isles and coves, and actually very pretty). Detroit was an nice place until the late '70's, but now if you visit there you are either lost or looking for trouble.... or a historian...
