Thinking of Moving to the States!? |
heya! hows it going?
im an englishmen, born and bred! thinking of moving to the good old' united states of america! most likely after i graduate from university! i will be 22 if i do it....
i want to start a new, fresh life out there, i like america, i have relatives in LA, so will be easy to gain a visa to live there.
i wondered though, i have a few questions about this, like what do americans think of english people?
i am thinking of doing like another post-graduate course at 'college' in american terms, to make some friends, but any tips on getting a social life out there? also what are the best states to live in, to your opinion? (be honest please, not just your state haha)
thanks
cheerio!
p.s. haha i am a typical englishmen, right now i am drinking a cup of tea at 2.04am in the morning! lol.... |

Do you have any idea how hard it is to immigrate to the uUS.? Just as hard ( if not harder) as it is for U.S. citizens to immigrate to the U.K. If you donot have immediate family members here, you need to apply through the diversity lottery program...and this takes YEARS. This year they will have registration for the 2010 lottery...then one of every 60 applicants is accepted to be allowed to apply to immigrate....whole process takes more than 8 years. Even getting a visa to work and reside in the U.S. for a period of time is very difficult...this is just reality. You need to research these things before deciding on what state to live in. If you are interested in applying for a student visa, you can get that info at the site below also. This is actually the most practical way to get to spend a yr. or more in the U.S. and get to know it better. You must show you can pay all exoenses and support yourself while here on a student visa. you are allowed to work no more than 20hrs a week ON CAMPUS as a foreign student. |

Well Good morng to you
When you come here just be yourself, take it one step at the time . It depends for you what you want to be after you're finnished here with College. And that pretty much will determine whe you will; settle. I came here from Germany in ,91 and it took me a year to get aclimatised here .
You're young and I wish you luck and success. |

Englishmen are admired in some areas, thought of as snooty in others. You'd probably do well in California of the Northeast, but the South probably wouldn't be your cup of tea.
Post-graduate training would suit you here. You'd be in a large city and would get along quite nicely. |

Ummm...we like englishmen as far as I know. LA is pretty liberal so if you're "different" from typical "American" standards of what is normal you'll find no better place to be accepted. I've lived in Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and Illinois and I've liked each one of them. If you like warm weather and partying and diversity then Florida and California are good. If you like laid back type of places Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Colorado and states of that sort are good. If you like tight knit communities New England, New York (not NYC), Pennsylvania are good. And cities are good life you like fast pace life. |

English people usually come across as intelligent because of their accents and language skills.
I've lived in DC/Virginia (20 years) - it was unfriendly but beautiful and great job opportunities, great museums, gorgeous downtown, great schools. ((Sometimes expensive!))
I've lived in Florida (1yr) - boring to me.
I've lived in Texas (10yrs) - very friendly but not much going on in Dallas area.
I go to LA twice a month. It's dirty and expensive (unless you have several million to live near the beach) but my I have friends in the film industry and I am guessing I will live at least near LA eventually. My son will likely attend UCSC (Santa Cruz).
I was born in St. Louis, Missouri (1 yr). That is a beautiful lush place, very underrated, lots of culture and beautiful architecture.
Each of those places has a good diverse population accept Florida.
If I were you, I would first find a school with a good curriculum for your field of study.
Cheers! And here's to Earl Grey! |

lol dat sounds great most americans dont think of english ppl as n e different from themselves & i personally think the best states 2 live in are california because it doesnt get really hot & they have awsome beaches (dis is comeing from a person dat lives is Kansas) and i also like Texas cause its never really cold & cause they have cool beaches (but the water is a little dirty) So pip pip and cherry-o or how ever u spell it
LOL

haha. Well, Americans will be opinionated one way or another no matter where you come from, so really just be yourself. Also if you stick with that British accent, you will get a lot of attention!
I suggest moving to a scenic place that fits your life style because other wise you will feel trapped in a box. Maybe some low profile (not that famous or crowded) place where you can go to parties and all that, but be able to relax with ease.
This might be faraway from family, but since you're looking at grad school, a good example of a place like that could be Charlottesville, Virginia on the east coast. That way you can go to the University of Virginia while staying in a good location. Problem solved! Oh and beware, girls will love your accent!
Good luck
p.s. We all have those nights where we find ourselves up late on our computer breaking out a cup of tea...well, maybe not tea! |
