Thank you!!
I think America, (like everywhere) has its share of jerks, creeps and weirdos. But you can't make a judgement on everyone in a certain country or culture by the few facts that you know or see. I was once robbed by a black man, that doesn't mean that ALL black men are thieves.....
btw....the people here are made up of so many different races and cultures that it is difficult to be able to make judgements on "Americans" |

Well there are separate reasons for such feelings in brits and others.
I dont know for now but in earlier days British considered themselves above all due to their rich historical background and centuries old traditions. They considerd the americans to be people with no culture or respectable roots. Then there has always been a certain recognized and some unrecognized sense of compitition between the two.The same feelings have creeped into todays british generations as well.
For some people it is the american govt. foreign policies which are unfortunately unjust in many cases as we know.
And for the rest of them it is a case of sour grapes...if u cant have them they surely are sour. They would love to be americans but cant be them so theyd just tell themselves that the americans arnt good enough.
Well i just wish that we all could one day rise above these discriminations not just brits or americans for that matter ...but everyone and make the world a better place for everyone. |

I think it has to do with the way Americans treat others. We tend to think that every other nation needs to be Americanized, and have little or no respect for other cultures. |

thank you, i agree with you when you say that there are idiots in every nation. just because we are americans doesn't mean we don't feel pain, joy, sorrow, or horror. we are just like every other person in the world: we want to make a better life for ourselves and we can't help being born where we are |

Not that I personally agree with this point of view, but it has to be the foreign policy and the right wing insular ultra conservative fundamental christian American tourists they meet, the gun culture, the excesses of Hollywood and the domination of American culture.
When it all gets put together it can be irritating and overpowering as a stereotype and there are not enough positive interactions to counterbalance this |

I think a lot of people judge Americans by what we see and hear on TV and through the media. I don't know many Americans, but the ones I do know are perfectly nice. The problem is that with SOME (not all) Americans, as soon as you start to criticise Bush and the current foreign policy, they get all definsive and think you are criticising them personally. Just my observations. |

I have the same opinion, but I have not become aware of americans being disliked. Most people I know, do like the yanks, as I do myself.
They are perhaps feeling a bit defensive lately, but that's to be understood. |

I think for many people all they know of Americans is what they see on TV, through the biased, sensationalizing media. That would make anybody look like nut-jobs.
Of course it's wrong, on MANY levels. If I believed everything I saw in the media I would be scared to talk to ANYBODY with a different national origin. |

USA is like everywhere else, you get a mix of good and bad.
The only yanks that do really scare me are the hard nose christians, or what are known as the Christian right wing.
They really are obnoxious with their holier than thou attitude and absolute devotion to the bible.
They are more frightening long term than anything that Islam can throw at us. |

because they mostly only see TVs view of America. they think all Yanks are either like the cast of Friends or the people on Jerry Springer.
Oh and, more legitimate reason, they keep voting for a man who can't put two words together to run their whole country! |

Right-wing politics, globalisation and questionable cultural sensitivity upset a lot of people. |

I am English tho I don't live in England. I have visited USA more than once, and I have probably seen more of America than most Americans. I once worked there for seven weeks, right over Christmas and New Year: I was glad when finally I was able to leave.
The main trouble with America is that it is so big that it doesn't have to worry about what the rest of the world is doing. Most Ameraicans live their entire lives in America and never set foot inside another country. How many countries had Bush visited before he became president? It is just like a gigantic cocoon.
It is difficult for a foreigner to find anything about America which would make him PRO-American! |

I don't think it is a case of English not liking Americans as such I just think that most English do not like the American attitude of we are the greatest and most powerful and the rest of the world will bow down.
It stems from their attitude of them saving us in WW2. I mean they would never have been so helpful if it hadn't have had the pearl harbour attack. Plus we owe them loads of money so we have to get involved in wars we don't really want to.
That's my theory anyway! |
