To look like a local you will be in a parka at about 50 degrees.
It does feel colder then it sounds, it is damp and windy. |

In San Francisco, you need a winter coat almost all of the year. |

Hahaha, well considering the storm we just had, maybe. Usually no, I walk around with a hoodie on. Maybe during the night you might want a winter coat, but during the day, a wind breaker and some sort of sweater will do fine. |

Wear layers. It gets pretty cold at night but warmer during the day. |

On some days you may need a winter coat. Sometimes, a jacket or cardigan will work. Layers, that's the key. |

You can check out http://www.123world.com/san-francisco/san-francisco-weather.php or http://www.san-francisco.cc/san-francisco-weather.php to see that you will need a jacket and an umbrella at this time of year. |

I depends on your tolerance for cold. San Francisco never gets very cold... but it seldom gets very warm, either. From my experience living on the East coast and in the midwest, people generally start wearing winter coats once the high temperatures drop down into the mid-30s. By this practice... you never have to wear a winter coat in San Francisco, since it never drops down into the 30s (sans a rare/occasional night time low).
However, if you *really* love being bundled up and warm, then you can technically wear a winter coat just about year round without getting too hot.
I usually wear a hoodie... In the winter, I'll add an extra layer, like a sweater under the hoodie, or a light coat over it. I generally do this from about November through February. But that's it. Never any need for a winter coat.
So... it's good to wear layers year-round. But you never really need a big/thick coat. |

seriously you need a coat of some kind nearly year round in SF proper. BUT, not one of those big hug warm wooly type things that most people back east wear. It is cool/mild at best. Right now it is raining. So that type of coat is best. I think the warmest winter coat I wear is my wool peacoat or my leather car coat. This winter is quite mild and i have not really been wearing much more than my cord blazer and a scarf.
Dressing in SF is best done in layers. It is generally cooler in the summer time than the winter as the fog usually rolls in. Fall is the warmest time of year.
The temperature really doesn't vary a whole in the City. highs range from 58 in January to 71 in sep. and lows 46 in january to 47 in December.
And December - March is the rainy season. Bulk of the in Jan - Feb. |

you can base your decision on average temperatures, or you can visit one of a number of websites that have forecasts for SF. |

I'd go by the temperature, the avg highs / lows in Jan are 58 / 46 and 61 / 49 in Feb.
The forecast for the next week is low to mid 50's with showers possible Tues and Thurs. Weather.com |

You don't need a winter coat exactly ,but layers of clothes is good. Oh and buy soccer socks. Their fitted kinda like a thermal, but for your legs. They go up to just before your knee, well if you fold them. Anyways soccer socks are my favorite thing to wear during winter. Try it, i guarantee you won't regret it. You can get soccer socks at like Big 5 or Sports Authority. |
