I live in the suburbs and go to school in the city (University of Detroit Mercy, a great school if I do say so my self).
They really are working to improve downtown Detroit. It has really been built up, and during the day, it is not a whole lot different than other major cities. There are fun little restaurants (you must try Pizza Papalis in Greektown!) and three casinos. It's right on the river, so there are some pretty parks. They are always having cool events like River Days, Shiver on the River, Detroit International Auto Show, ice skating during the winter...
It is right across the border, and it's pretty easy to go across to Windsor for the night. There's a decent nightlife over there.
Detroit puts a lot of money into their roads. Although the expressways are confusing at times (if you're me anyway...) they are very convenient, and you can be to a lot of the major suburbs within 30 minutes.
The city is very diverse. We have a large Polish area called Hamtramack, which makes the best Packzi for Fat Tuesday (think giant jelly filled donut). I believe the area also has the largest Arabic poplulation outside the Middle East (mostly in Dearborn). If you want culture, there it is.
Really, the biggest thing is to keep your eyes and ears open and be smart. Don't wander around by yourself at night, don't drive a flashy car, stick with main roads where you can...you'll be fine. I know you'll have some great times in Detroit. Enjoy! |

Lots of History and Culture.
People are usually more friendly than a lot of other cities.
Wayne state university is a very good university if you ever thought about attending school up here.
The best place to escape from Ohio, than again, anything better than Ohio.
Oh yeah! You do not have to deal with nasty, hot and humid summers like you do in most southern states. Very big plus for anyone like myself who doesn't like to sweat any time other than being in the gym. |

Are you moving directly into Detroit, or near it? Detroit has actually come a long way, and unless you're moving into a really bad area, its not a bad place to live.
There are great museums, a library, they have all kinds of different things to do. There are also lots of things to do in the surrounding area.
Check out this website http://www.ci.detroit.mi.us/Visitors/tabid/59/Default.aspx and feel free to email me if you have other questions. |

My sister lives in Detroit and loves it. I live in Michigan and visit her often. She actually lives right down where doesn't even have to her building (using enclosed skywalk) to get to the Joe Louis Arena and watch Red Wings Hockey, and Concerts that come. You can also go to the North America Car Show IN the motor city. A lot of work is being done on the Riverfront. I absolutely love downtown. There is Belle Isle park, down a ways on Jefferson Ave right off of Downtown and the architecture is absolutely beautiful. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a must see, Along with the Detroit science center, and the The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is the world's largest institution dedicated to the African American experience. Check out these websites.

Culture - you will be hard pressed to find a city with more cultural diversity.
Money - the 10th largest city and over 4.5 million people in the metro area. Still one of the richest areas of the united states.
Sports - Detroit represents all four major sports and well represents many other small sports. |

Well there is plenty to do in the downtown area. You've got the casinos, some clubs, Comerica Park, Ford Field, the Riverwalk, Greektown, Fox Theatre, Joe Louis Arena.
You will definitely want to head to Campus Martius during the summer because they have concerts going on just about everyday.
There are also museums such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, Historical Museum, Science Center, and Charles Wright Museum.
I don't know what neighborhood you are moving to, but the Indian Village District is pretty nice, as well as downtown and the University District.
Downtown is really the focus point as of now for a lot of new things and they are hoping it radiates out to the rest of the city.
If you want more info and pictures from someone who lives here, check the resource link :) |

Entertainment
|
There are festivals in the summer at Hart Plaza. The casinos are pretty good. At the River Walk downtown they have bike rentals so you can rent and ride. Here is a bonus for you. Belle Isle is a nice place to chill out. |

Finally, someone that wants to think positive! It appears that the easiest thing to do about Detroit (and a lot of other things) is to be negative. Detroit is a tough, industrial city with lots of history and a ton of entertainment and a good standard of living. It has its problems, but a lot of that is not the good citizens fault.
I would check out this so you can get a feel for the area and pinpoint things you would like to explore.
Detroit is rich in music, sports, automotive and has a lot of positive things happening, but people do not mention that.

I like your positive attitude. I was the same way 9 years ago and now I know this area better than some of my friend's that grew up here. |

I live in Detroit and it is not as bad as everyone makes it seem. No you do not walk out the door and get shot and I have never encountered that stuff. The east and west side of Detroit has nice big homes. But Downtown has the best apartments and your right in the mist of everything.
1.) Wayne state university
2.) The River-walk
3.) Comerica park, Ford Field, Joe Louis Arena
4.) Casinos
5.) The Institute of Arts
6.) Science Center
7.) African American Museum
8.) Hard Rock Cafe
9.) Detroit Zoo
10.) Campus Martius {Ice skating}
Plus so much more, its always something going on in downtown Detroit... |

move to Southfield,Birmingham or Bloomfield Hills MI.
Oakland county is one of the wealthy countys in us
Oakland County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of 2007, the population was estimated at 1,206,089.[2] The county seat is Pontiac[3]. Oakland County is part of the Detroit metropolitan area, though the actual city of Detroit is located in neighboring Wayne County, south of 8 Mile Road. Oakland County is home to 62 cities, villages and townships. These communities range from blue-collar, inner-ring suburbs like Ferndale, to wealthy cities such as Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. The white-collar cities of Troy, Southfield, Farmington Hills and Auburn Hills host a mix of Fortune 500 companies. The city of Royal Oak, home of the Detroit Zoological Park, attracts many young people to its mature downtown, which has many trendy restaurants, shops and night clubs. Oakland County is also home to Oakland University, located in Rochester Hills.
Metro Detroit's suburbs are among the most affluent in the nation. Oakland County is the fourth wealthiest county in the United States among counties with more than one million people.[4] The county's automotive-oriented economic base, coined "Automation Alley", is one of the largest employment centers for engineering and related occupations in the United States. Oakland County has shared in the recent economic hardships brought on by troubles at General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, although it has fared better than Detroit and Flint, as its economy is more diverse and less reliant on manufacturing jobs. All three automotive companies are major employers within southeast Michigan, and have significant investments within Oakland County. |

The Detroit Red Wings ....
Er ... ah ... The Red Wings ...
Hmmm ... did I mention the Red Wings?
Just kidding ... hockey is a big deal in Detroit and you could have some fun with that and learning how to ice skate. Terrific way to make friends.
University of Detroit is a pretty good school, with a great library, etc.
Some of the outlying areas are good places to live and raise kids.
You don't have to spend much time working on a perfect hairdo each morning ... two steps out the front door and it will be destroyed by the wind and you'll look like everyone else ...
Toledo that is south of Detroit has some opportunities for learning how to sail (cheaply) and The Old West End Festival is the first weekend in June ... if you like to tour those old beautiful mansions.
I've lived there for 4.5 years and still stay in contact with the friends we made there.
I wish you luck!

There's alot of positive things about Detroit, however, I live in Detroit, and unless you already have found a job, I wouldn't recommend moving here. Jobs are very low (in Michigan as a whole), and I was almost unemployeed for about....... 6 months. I'm not trying to bring you down, I'm just trying to imform you. However, Detroit is very fun and have alot of things going home. It's home to people like Madonna and Dianna Ross, and they have fun yearly events like The Best Cancer "Race for A Cure" in May, and River Days downtown in June. They have the best high school in Michigan there called Renaissance High School, it% |
