Travelling to the USA, will I have trouble getting in?

When i was young, i was very wayward, (bit of trouble with our lovely uk constabulary), picked up a conviction for affray. Have grown up!!! I am totally reformed (done lots of repairation, worked with disadvantaged children, etc) now and may have the possibility of going to the florida keys, i'm a bit worried about the US immigration policy, All Advice Welcomed!

Also note that most British citizens can get into the US temporarily without a visa, since the U.K. has a VWP (visa-waiver program) agreement, but contact one of the above US diplomatic offices to be sure.

i cant imagine that would stop you getting in if you have a valid reason for going. and you have a visa etc etc...

US immigration are more intelligent than we give them credit for. If we're talking a good decade ago when you picked up the conviction as a kid, US immigration are unlikely to turn you back. They are intelligent enough to realise that you were kid, got into a bit of trouble, and the conviction sorted you out. If there is no other evidence over the last decade to suggest that you will be a problem or cause trouble once inside the US, they will let you in.

Ms Dee
Depends on how long ago the conviction was for. I think it drops of after 10 years but check with the American Embassy.

You need to fill out a DS156 visa application form (you can do this online) which applies for a US non-immigrant visa. As someone who has been convicted, you are inelgible for the Visa Waiver scheme. There is a section on the DS156 which asks you to declare if you have been arrested/ convicted, and you will need to complete this appropriately - the decision will then be up to the US visa staff - if you get the vise, then you will be able to travel and not have problems on arrival.

You shouldn't have any problems at all as long as you have a return ticket. US Immigration may take your picture and finger print you but you should have no problems.

Ask the American Embassy before you go.

MrKnowItAll
Since this was when you were young, go and visit the American Embassy ahead of time and get everything pre-cleared. Let them do a background check on your and issue special paperwork to you so you wont have any problems travelling. Once you are actually within the US, there shouldnt be any further problems.

Come on down to the keys! The weather is still nice down here!

Jewel
Guess Thomas S is your man.

I would say always check with the Embassy concerned before you travel. If you are going on holiday for a couple of weeks and they can track you in and out you might be ok, but always best to check first.

well if you get your visa you will know if you can get in or not.. you wont get in without a visa so you go to the embassy in London and get your form and fill it in and then queue for your visa....

Yes! Give yourself about um, 2-4 years of filling out stupid Questions! It's like 10 times harder than 20 questions, more like 2000 questions!
