its not bad luck to take rocks from the BEACHES, only from the volcano sites. PELE is the goddess of fire. Her brother is the goddess of the ocean, i dont know the name but i dont think its bad luck. And what ever you heard about the bad luck thing, i just dont know where you heard it from. Probably from that movie the brady bunch. If it was given to you by other tourist then dont think about bad luck because they are the first that took the rock from its place so they will have the bad luck not you.

The Postmaster of Hawaii gets 1000's of rocks every month in the mail. Do not take rocks home especially from the Heiaus, (burial grounds or places of worship) I'm 45 yrs old & have heard 100's of stories even on national TV, it even happened to one of my uncles who pissed on a gravesite without knowing it when he was younger. People who take rocks from sacred sites home or off the Island become deathly ill & no Dr.s can scientifically explain why. This happens over & over. This happenned to my uncle when he was young & in perfect health. In Hawaii we have very strong Mana or spirituality. Just like in other places in the world there are magnetic forces & universal energy. Why else would the postmaster receive soo many rocks in the mail from all over the world. Because these people become sooo sick & in pain but no Dr.s can explain why. This has been going on for years & years. Bottom line I'm not trying to convince you of anything except...you come to my house you treat my house with respect. Us Hawaiians are very spiritual, so when we go to your house we will treat your land with the utmost respect. OK? Deal? Our motto is to leave a place even better than when we came. If that means picking up someone else's rubbish hat the wind may have blown there, if it means planting a tree, whatever, common sense & respect, very simple. Mahalo (thank you) & Aloha (Love) If it was given to you by some other tourist, you better print out dis page ASAP & give it to them along with every single rock & tell them to mail it or take it back to exactly where they got it from!

Not bad luck, just disrespectful. I would leave every thing in it's place so that the next tourist can enjoy it just as much. If it was given to you, I would put it back close to where it was given.

I found that out living in Hawaii. We were told it offends Pele and she will send bad luck to you. Many people have found they have had horrible bad luck after taking the rocks. They even have the stories on snopes.

whether or not it's bad luck it is disrespectful. the native Hawaiians are very spiritual and believe taking the rocks angers Pele. would you go to cathedral in the Vatican wearing shorts and a tank top? of course not, it would be disrespectful to their beliefs. also, as stated above, if every tourist takes a rock, there will not be any left. let others enjoy the unspoiled beauty. millions of tourists go to Hawaii, they could wipe out a beach if they all took rocks

Not any rock, a lava rock. There has been many cases with tourist you say they don't believe in all this mumble jumble and take home a piece of the lava rock. Weirdly enough they all become sick or get really bad luck! Now the true believers say it's because of the goddess Pele, she is the goddess of the lava. And, of course others say it must be some kind of chemical or something that the rock produces that makes you sick. Trust me I was born and raised in Hawaii and there have been many cases where tourist bring home a lava rock, all of a sudden get sick or bad luck, they send back to lava rock to Hawaii, and surprisingly they all becomes better. ALL I CAN SAY IS IF YOU BELIEVE OR DON'T BELIEVE DO NOT TAKE ANY LAVA ROCKS HOME WITH YOU EVEN IF GIVEN TO YOU BY ANOTHER PERSON!!!

the hawaiians are a mystical and superstitious people. they think that the ancient goddess Pele makes the island and that it is blessed. but if you take parts of it away it pisses her off and she curses you with bad luck. If every tourist took a few rocks Hawaii would disappear.

so it is just a silly superstition. ( right???)

Depends on if you believe in luck, curses, gods/goddesses, etc. Legends say Pele will curse you with bad luck if you take a lava rock. If it'll make you feel better, put it back on the beach or if you're not there anymore, mail it back to Hawaii.

If you don't believe, then at least be respectful. You wouldn't go to a national park on the mainland and pick flowers to take home. What if everyone did that? Or if someone picked flowers for you, then you should at least return the flowers to the field to become compost and nourish the earth. Same with the beaches of Hawaii. They are national treasures and should be treated with respect. Bring home photos and memories.

Well, I personally don't believe in luck- I believe that everything happens for a reason, but just bcuz you bring a rock from another place doesn't mean ur gonna have bad luck.

It is for you to decide what to believe. What many 'pagans' believe - - - is that stones can have souls - - - and so with any 'living object' you should think twice about dislodging any stone from its place, ask if it wants to be brought to your home, or promise it a good home, much like stumbling over a cute kitty or puppy. Often a rock from the sea can be a Coral which was once alive - - - so it needs prayer for the sea - - - In Hawai'i they talk about 'Walking Stones,' rocks which move in odd ways during the nigt - - - those and the fact that at odd times boulders have fallen from hillsides killing people - - - so yes some people do get superstitious. Assuming you are a 'good Christian' a simple prayer is always advisable - - - no matter the origin of the belief. God and/or Jesus is suppose to be looking out for you so you got any doubts say a prayer. Peace.....

Possessing lava rock(s) from Hawaii has caused enough bad luck to enough people. These people did return the rocks, usually through postal mail, in an attempt to discontinue the bad luck that they experienced. The Volcano National Park has a huge glass case displaying just a small quantity of the rocks returned. The legend of Pele, the Volcano Goddess, is consistent when describing her wrath. Don't fool with her without anticipating some serious consequences. Hawaii was created by volcanoes thus all the rocks are volcanic or lava. The rocks are respected by the locals whether you are Hawaiian or any other Nationality. If a rock is violated accidentally, we apologize to the rock. Most have had bad experiences or know of those who did. Personally, I believe and I had a bad experience with lava rock which I won't discuss. Believe or don't believe, it's up to you. But always respect everything and everything will be alright.

Now the question asked is "rocks from the beaches of Hawaii". If this means coral, this is another issue. Coral is not volcanic but a living organism or a skeleton of a living organism. There are no bad luck stories that I know of regarding coral removal. But there are two cautions which could lead to bad luck. One, some corals are poisonous and can be harmful. Two, the removal of coral or sand from the shoreline and sea is illegal in Hawaii. See the law below.

(1) The taking from seaward of the shoreline of such materials, not in excess of one gallon per person per day for reasonable, personal, noncommercial use;

The other three exceptions are to allow replenishment or protection of public shoreline areas, clearing of stream mouths, and cleaning of areas seaward of the shoreline for state or county maintenance.

Taking of sand on a regular basis for use as a product for sale would be considered as constituting a commercial use, which is not permissible.

Ovid has the right answer. It's a Hawaiian spiritual thing dealing with Pele, the goddess of fire and maker of the land. The legend is that Pele came from Tahiti to Hawaii in search of a place to keep her sacred fires safe from her eldest sister, the goddess of the sea. Since Hawaii was created by Pele's sacred fires (from lava), the Hawaiian people regard her has their most sacred god/ess and don't want to anger/disrespect her by taking a part of the land away. One way to pay your respects to Pele, should you decide to take a portion of Hawaii with you is to stack volcanic rocks. You'll see stacks of rocks alongside the road as you drive through Hawaii.
