You won't have time to do one thing well, let alone two.
It depends on what you're interested in and where you'll be.
Consider poking around Hollywood, because everyone always want to see it.
Otherwise, go to Santa Monica and hang out at the pier.
Most of the museums, etc. are closed at night, so those are your two best options that are open at night that are more than shopping and eating. |

You'll be disappointed if you only go to Hollywood, it's crap. I didn't really see much to like about the place to be honest, sorry! |

Go to Melrose Ave.! It is really fun down there. Something else to do is see the Hollywood Walk of Fame. |

Because you only have one night take a drive through Beverly Hills and Bel Air to look at how the rich live, then go to either The Hollywood Bowl or go see Wicked at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.
If you don't like looking at mansions you could take a drive on Mulholland Dr. or drive over to Santa Monica beach and pier.
Or, if you want to see a movie in a grandly restored theater, go see a film at the El Capitan in Hollywood. |

Your question suggests availability only at night...?
However, for a trip of limited time I would recommend checking out Venice Beach for as much time as you have - there is tons to see there. I strongly discourage Venice at night time, though - lots of funky culture but pretty seedy after dark for someone who isn't familiar with their surroundings.
My second recommendation would be visiting either of the Getty Museums. Phenomenal setting and collection at both. I cannot choose a favorite of the two. Probably Malibu...maybe.
Where you are from, your age, etc. are all factors of what sites should be the MUST SEE of your trip. Hollywood is epic for a tourist - if you haven't been there before. And, of course, SHOPPING! Phenomenal shopping throughout L.A. From Robertson, The Grove, California Mart, artsy Los Feliz, Rodeo Drive...all of these are mandatory if you have never experienced L.A. shopping before. So, whichever is closest to your hotel - not one of them would be disappointing. HAVE FUN!! |

I have a few: Grauman's Chinese theatre (where the hand prints of the stars are),
Hollywood,
Santa Monica pier,
Griffith park observatory,
or the Getty museum. |

The Getty Museum is awesome. It is free, except for parking which I believe is 5 or 6 dollars per vehicle. This place is worth seeing!
Some cool shopping areas are Melrose, the Beverly Center, 3rd Street Prominade in Santa Monica, the Ocean Front Walk in Venice, etc.
Another fun thing to do is go to the House of Blues in Hollywood if there are any goods bands playing there on the night you are in town.
I would suject grabbing an L.A. Weekly to find out what exactly is going on the days you will be here. This free paper can be found on the street and outside of businesses. Have fun! |

I would try to hit the Getty if you have time for a museum with an incredible view. I would also spend time doing Beverly Hills area (rodeo) and Hollywood, all in one day. |
