Vacation to NYC? I have a few questions...?

1.My boyfriend and I are planning on staying outside of the city(like 10 miles away from time square) because it's too expensive..will it be safe?

2.If we take the subway or bus how much would it cost? And are they as bad as people say they are?

3.Are they strict on the drinking age there? I'm 19 and my boyfriend is 21 and we want to go to a night club or bar. Do you have to be 21 to get into most clubs/bars? Any clubs/bars that you suggest?

4.Best place to go shopping? I'm a bargain shopper! Or any cool malls?

5.Places to eat that are not that expensive?

Sorry I asked a lot of questions! But I hope you can help :)

1.) Really depends where you're staying. 10 miles is good in some directions, not so much in others.

2.) Buy a metro pass, works on both subways and busses. Subways will run $2 per trip. It's a pretty good deal.

3.) It really depends. If you try clubs in mid town, strict. The village (east especially) less so.

4.) SOHO (south of Houston) has loads of shopping. If you want to go cheap there are street vendors, cheaper yet go to Canal Street fo China town knock offs.

5.) You need to look around a bit, some deli's have good deals, but I'd suggest you ask people what they'd suggest. Believe it or not, most New Yorkers are pretty freindly and know the good deals (it will vary by where you are in the city).

1. U can even stay in NEW Jersey which has many ways of transportation to NYC and is MUCH LESS expensive. I live in NJ 10 min from Manhattan.
2.Subway n Bus is great....If u get lost.. ask there millions of ppl that can help u n is cheap and secure..
3. Must of the bars to be able to drink u need to be 21+ but u can get in after 18.
4.Best places to shop China town.. the village, and TimeSquare
5. They are millions and millions of places to eat... not worry about that

1) it depends on where you are, NYC has some really nice neighborhoods but it also has some bad ones, stay away from the bronx, downtown brooklyn, and other getto areas

2)subway is $2 a ride, it's not as bad as people make it seem but again depending on where you are and what time it is, it can be dangerous, but if you at places like times square your ok , there are so many people around even at night that it not too much of a problem....just dont put you purse down lol

3)for the most part there are places you can drink underage, but in the city you will ahve to have your ID

4)lol bargain???? in manhatten lol, you really are from out of town, if you want a bargin dont shop in the city, even mcdonalds $1 menu is $1.50 in mahatten. go to the staten island mall or somewhere in brooklyn if you want a deal

5) again see above

hope that helped ya

1) Yes. NYC has become like DisneyLand!
2) $2 per ride , you can get all day passes for $7
3) Yes they tend to be strict in many many places
4) Bargain in Manhatten , good Luck!!
5) Almost anywhere

There are plenty of safe places as you decribe. Find some hotels and call them directly to ask about the neighborhood and subway connections into Manhattan.

I was at first put off by the Subway. It seemed confusing and scary. After riding for a few years, I have found it to be pretty good and people are very friendly about giving directions.

You might have a problem if you look your age. While restaurants are not as likely to check ID, bars and clubs are.

When you visit New York, you must go to Macy's Herold Square store, but for bargain shopping you will want to head for the Village or SOHO. Macy's is a shopping mall in itself as the worlds largest store.

There are a number of places in the Times Square area that are reasonably priced. Bubba Gump, TGI Fridays, etc.

Of course it will be safe

It would be better to take the subway, its cheaper, the people are not as bad since 9/11

They are strict with the whole age thing but maybe because you are a girl, it will help

China town is definitely, hands down, the best place to shop

eating out is easy in NY and you can tell where it will be expensive

YOU WILL LOVE IT, I DID

I just went to New York last summer. We stayed at the Comfort Inn Midtown...it was the cheapest I could fine but was very descent. We figured by the time we would pay for taxis or figure out the subway, a little extra money is worth it. Check them out at comfortinn.com to find the rates.

If you are 19, I wouldn't even attempt to get into a night club or bar..yes, they are very strict.

I think the best thing you could do at this point is to get a book. Get one by Fodors or Frommers...look on e-bay or amazon.com and you can get one for cheap. I had the Fodor's 2007 and it has a listing of restaurants by location in the city and has dollar signs for how much they cost. It also has some places to shop!

Also, we did a bus tour of the city by Grayline (www.grayline.com) if you want to do a lot of sightseeing, it is great and will save you a lot of money and have tours with several stops around the city so you can hop on and hop off

I live in Long Island so perhaps I can help.

1. I really depends. Stay in a brand name hotel for one. Otherwise, you'll end up in some crappy old motel. You really never know what your getting into. If you could perhaps stay in Long Island, in the Nassau area. It will be alot cheaper, and safer. You can stay in an area close to the City, 20-40 minutes away.
2. Very cheap actually. A couple of dollars or so. Subways arent too bad actually. It's a fast, cheap and easy way to get around. Buses are fine, you wont find as many as you would think. Perhaps a cab? Most places you'll find yourself walking to though.
3.Can't suggest any but it's NYC you're bound to find somewhere!
4.Shop right in time square. There will be plenty of people selling things on the street for SO cheap. There will be stores right and left of you. For some good deals, go to Queens.
5. Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood are always good, fun and cheap. There are lots of places to eat! Pizzerias, Fridays, Friendlys, everything!

HAVE FUN!

1. The best place I would recommend will be the Hyatt Regency Jersey City on The Hudson Hotel, located in Jersey City, NJ, just 3 to 4 miles from New York City. The hotel is downtown Jersey City, so it safe and there is direct train access to New York City via the PATH train, which is a small commuter railway that operates between New York City and New Jersey.

2. Is the subway and bus safe and how much would it cost? If you staying in Jersey City, and take the PATH train into and out of New York City, the fare on the PATH is $3 round trip per person. However, you can be a multi-trip QuickCard from anywhere $15 to $48 depending on number of trip in and out of Jersey City.

The subway and bus, on the other hand, is not as bad as it looks in the movies. The subway is safe and every economical. The fare on both the subway and the bus is $2 one way per person, but if you buy an unlimited MetroCard for either $7 for a 1 day pass, or $24 for a 7 days pass, you can ride the entire subway and bus system as many time has you which.

3. Most bar and clubs will allow you in at 19.

4. The best place to shop will be Chinatown, you can get plenty of bargains along Canal Street.

5. Their are plenty of place that are not that expensive in New York City, check the link below for resturants that will fit you budget.

I hope this information is very helpful. If you have any questions or need travel direction while in town just drop me a line by clicking the avatar and the e-mail icon in the profile.

Good luck and happy travels

Hey, are you a AAA member? (like roadservice...) I work for AAA & I book hotels, cars, getaways, motorcoach trips to NYC etc. You dont have to be a member for that stuff but you get a bigger discount if you are. I know we have getaway packages for 1-3 nights either including a broadway show ticket, or attractions & sights, etc. And I can give you a tourbook for NY that has all the restaurants/attractions etc in it! AND I can price a hotel for you. (there's no charge, we just do it as a service....our system tells us whats available in that area, sort by price, location, diamond rating, etc) SO you can email me at Erika52385@yahoo.com or egagliardi@aaasj.com and I can help you with all that if you want and send you the info wherever u live.

1) The whole NYC area has expensive hotels, no matter where you go, period. However, there are some good places outside of Manhattan. Many parts of Queens are quite safe. Get yourself near Queens Boulevard, and you're sitting on top of one of the city's busiest subway lines, and that'll carry you right into Manhattan.

There are many very safe places (and a few not-so-safe places) in the area, so my advice is to zone in on specific neighborhoods and then ask about those. Do NOT take the word of anyone who says simply, "Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx are unsafe." NOT true. There are GREAT neighborhoods in all boroughs, though some not-so-great ones as well. Again, zone in on specific neighborhoods, and don't let people make generalizations. You can't make simple blanket statements about places that have larger populations than some entire US STATES.

2) Subways and regular buses are $2 (express buses are $5). With a Metrocard, $2 gets you a ride AND one free transfer from bus to subway or subway to bus, provided you use the transfer within two hours. Once you enter the subway system, you can theoretically use it forever on a single $2 fare, with unlimited transfers, as long as you don't exit a station.

It is quite safe, it's fast, it's cheap, and it's clean. How bad do people say they are? Personally, I love them, and it's New York's main way to get around. Maybe a little intimidating at first, but when you learn the system, it will become your best friend. Furthermore, it's difficult to get lost because there's always a way to turn around. There are also MANY people to ask; despite common legend, New Yorkers ARE very friendly to tourists! For more mass-transit info:
http://www.mta.info

3) They're generally strict. Nobody wants to risk their liquor license by serving an underaged patron. It might be 18 to enter, 21 to drink in some places.

4) New Yorkers don't do malls, that's a suburban thing. You can do that at home. There are stores everywhere. Just walk around and explore. Street fairs are good for bargain-hunters, and apparently Canal Street is good for bargain-hunters. Again, my best advice is to make the trip your OWN, and explore!! Don't be afraid to just walk around and find things! If you get lost, no worries, New York is one of the most tourist-friendly places you'll ever visit. Just ask anyone who HAS been here.

5) Food is generally expensive in New York, but not always ridiculous. Look for more modest places where people dress casually. One favorite of mine is Dallas BBQ, with a few locations in NYC. Very good food, and the prices are surprisingly good. Great ribs.

If you want to know anything else, feel free to ask!

I stayed in times square before, so I hope I can help, the subway is not that expensive, you just pick how many days you want to be able to ride, and then you get your tickets from a machine. If you have any questions, there is usually a guy behind a desk to help. I am not sure about the clubs, but I see lots of people smoking and drinking there, and since i'm only 17, I haven't been to any clubs, and/or bars, sorry. There is the Manhatten Mall, a big ripp-off mall, if you ask me, but it IS cool, but the best place for discounts is the discount district, i've gotten LOTS of name-brand purses there. I like Cosmic Diner on 8th Ave. It is cheap, they deliver, and there food is awesome! And STAY AWAY FROM MOST RESTURANTS! The delis are the best place, you can get lots of good food there, and it is cheap! RESTURANTS ARE EXPENSIVE! So, yah, this should help you in new york. :)

When I went to NYC, we stayed in a hotel 5 miles from Jersey, and unless we wanted to either pay $24.00 per person, per time (like in and out each day), or split a $75.00 taxi, we had to take the bus, then the bus again, then the path, then the subway... and it took two hours each way. So I would DEFINITELY take that into account, either by staying in the city or budgeting extra money into your budget, because the cheap way isn't the shortest way!

Subways aren't bad, but the bus to the path train was a bit sketchy. We got lost and were going the wrong way on the subway, and a lady over-heard us saying where we thought we were going and kindly informed us that we were heading to the Bronx, lmao.

Being 21 to drink is a national law. Legally no one under the age of 21 is allowed to drink anywhere in the US.
