WHAAAAAT???? For 20 years of my life I've always thought NEW YORK is the Capital of the US? ... or WAS IT NOT? |
Ive just found out tonight it's actually WASHINGTON D.C. as the Capital of the US. ??????
How come???
Why then NEW YORK is somewhat more POPULAR city when we say "U.S." and much more often heard from the mouth, compared to the Washington DC???
Im sure as hell everybody i know THINKS that New York is the capital of the US. Im gonna surprise them about this!
I asked my brother and he answered "New York" undoubtingly! |

If you were asleep since about 1800 you had the right answer, since New York was among the early capitals of US (where Congress met).
That was a couple of hundred years ago and times have changed. |

New York City was the capital of the US in the 1780s and the country's first president, George Washington, was sworn into the presidential office at Federal Hall in downtown Manhattan. Today, NYC is the financial capital of the world. |

Congress first sat in Philadelphia at the outbreak of the Revolution, but was forced to flee when that city was occupied by the British Army. At the conclusion of the war New York City was picked as the temporary capitol, and George Washington served his entire two terms as President in New York City.
However, the Southern states wanted the capitol closer to them, and Maryland donated land that became the District of Columbia. Construction began during Washington's Presidentcy, and his successor, John Adams, became the first President to work in what was then called Federal City within the District of Columbia. Upon Washington's death in December 1799, a move was made to change the name of Federal City to Washington. The capitol has been there ever since.
Unlike European countries, where the capitol generally is the largest city, in some (not all) western hemisphere countries the capitol in chosen for a central location, and deliberately set away from the largest city. Examples are Canada and Brazil in addition to the USA. |

dude you're an idiot. you've lived here 20 years and don't know the capital is wash dc? get a grip! this is taught in grammar school! the only other city to be capital of thr US was philadelphia. sheesh, no wonder our society is in trouble! |

I believe that New York was at one time for a very short time as well the captial of the US. Washington, DC is about 230 miles south of NYC and seems to be at a more central location when it was named the capital which was over 200 years ago and the US has expanded westward greatly since then. |

New York was one of the cities that were the capital of the U.S.,the others are Washington, Philadelphia and Annapolis,Md. You must have read that in a history book.
New York is a much larger city than Washington.
There is a state called Washington, which is not even close to being the capital, maybe that is what you were thinking about. |

you think that because you people there are so self abosrbed and rude. |
