We are planning to move to the Dallas, TX. We'll gladly appreciate your opinion about small suburban towns. |
In our search for a place to live, we've look at cities such as Plano, Mckinney, Wylie, Frisco, Prosper and Waxahachie (online only, not physically). If you're familiar with Dallas and can give us some pointers as to the overall best of these |

Where you live should really depend on where the breadwinner of the family intends to work. It is not unusual to take three hours to commute from home to work or work to home, depending on where in the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex these two locations are. Live as close to work as you can stand.
There are no "small" suburban towns near Dallas. Plano has over 200,000 people, making it the 70th largest city in the US! McKinney has over 100,000 people. Prosper and Waxahachie, while small, are not suburban. They're each over thirty miles from Dallas.
If you're a city person, just about any location that's not Dallas is a good place to live. If you're a country person, either consider another area, or prepare to commute twenty to thirty hours a week. |

I'm from the area you're talking about, and I would recommend either Garland, Sachse, or Wylie. Garland has a lot to do and is filled with plenty of very nice and safe neighborhoods (in the right part of town of course. But even in worse parts, it's still not too bad.) Sachse and Wylie are similar. Very pretty land and plenty of high schools to choose from. Sachse High School is one of the nation's top high schools. (And you can go there if you live in Sachse or Garland.) Check it out and good luck with the move!
P.S.
(But if you were only looking for reviews of the cities you mentioned, sorry but I'm not too familiar with the specifics of those cities. But of course I've been to each of them and don't remember anything that I didn't like!) |

I grew up in Plano. They ( at one time anyway ) had the 2nd richest school district in TX. If I could get everyone to go with me I'd move back! Plano is maybe 45 min. in good traffic from Dallas. |

I cannot believe that everyone mentioned Wylie, Murphy, and Sachse, but not Rowlett and Rockwall!!
I have lived in Rowlett most of my life and I will probably move back or at least close to it after I graduate. It has a pop. of about 45,000. It has just enough noise to not seem too boring, but pretty low key as far as crime and such. It is between two of the major highways that lead to Dallas (George Bush and I-30), so it only takes about 20-25, 35-45 in traffic. Rockwall has great shopping and Rowlett is really really close to Firewheel Town Center (I'm 5 minutes from it) in Garland. Its also about 20 minutes from the Plano and McKinney area if you are looking for job opportunities there (I have worked and gone to school in both cities). It really is a safe and great place for kids to grow up. There's a waterpark and skatepark, many park areas and Lake Ray Hubbard. There's also many community festivals throughout the year. Rowlett is really a great place. I lived in the same place for about 17 years and my parents didn't want to leave Rowlett so they looked for another house 3 minutes away.
If you are just going from the list though, I would definitely start in Plano, McKinney, and Wylie. Many of my close friends live in those cities and really love it. And Plano has a top notch school system.
Good Luck and God Bless!! |

Plano and Frisco are both nice upscale suburbs. They are safe and clean and have good education systems. You can find good jobs in those places too.
The other places are a little farther away from Dallas are also nice areas. |

whats wrong with Segoville, and Grand Prairie,i use to live in Red Oak also.their are a lot of small little communities around the big D area.i lived in Dallas for 10 years and it was worse than my home town of Detroit.but i lived in a crime ridden Oak Cliff in the 80s and that left a rel sour taste for me.if i had to move back to Texas i would live in the pan handle. |

Of the cities you have listed - I would pick Frisco. I used to live in the DFW area. |

Try Lewisville. 10 years ago it was the fastest growing city in the US. Good schools, too. |

Plano, Frisco, Carrollton, Lewisville, Euless, Arlington are bigger towns, but some suburbs such as Copper Canyon, Rockwall, and Flower Mound are good ones.
I would go with Rockwall, Carrollton, Frisco, or Plano. |

i live in mesquite, it is basically east dallas but much calmer. it's about 10 minutes away. garland is right next to mesquite and it is a nicer town. of the ones you listed. waxahachie is very slow and small but is great if you have kids because of the wide open spaces. plano and frisco are nice, if you have the money. you might also look into richardson, or maybe even dallas! my sister is a lawyer and they live in northeast dallas... it's a REALLY nice neighborhood and really close to downtown. |

I've lived in Duncanville one the southern suburbs. It has a wonderful school system. It is presently one the fastest growing local economies in the region. Nice neighborhood. Police response time is approximately 2.4 minutes. |

I am from Waxahachie.... not much to do there. My mother is a teacher in the district and I will say their school system is a bit dated. Waxahachie is far from things such as malls, and stadiums. If you are not active Waxahachie woudl be great for you.
Plano, McKinney, Frisco are all very close to each other, and this is where the new housing boom is. If you like things to do this is a good area for you, but also keep in mind the drive time to Dallas and Fort worth, depending on where you will be working.

The northern suburbs, like the ones you have listed are great. You also have to weigh in your commute time. There is a limited mass transit system in DFW, so unless you live and work next to a DART line, then you WILL spend a lot of time in your car. I would choose something in Collin County. McKinney is good. Also look at Anna or Melissa. They are a few more miles up 75. Frisco is in the middle of everything, but there is not a highway that does not have any stops in it yet. 121 is in development, and the Tollway is not finished as well. It all depends on how far you want to drive. |

I would chose Mckinney, Wylie, or Frisco from your list . There is a town called Murphy next to Wylie that I like as well .
Plano has run out of land to build houses so you will pay a premium . (You can cross the road to Frisco )
Prosper is a bit more North and the Waxahachie area just doesn't seem worth the drive in my opinion .
If you can settle more on the Fort Worth side you will find better housing bargains , less traffic and crime .
I live in Tarrant, County and there are unbelievable bargains on homes here . My friend bought an 1800 sq. ft. home with a pool for $98,000 last week . |

Wylie and Sasche are more on the country side and have plenty of scary dark roads that look like there from some scary movie.
Plano, McKinney, Frisco are for stuck up people, and are on the very edge of Dallas county. which would make getting to work difficult if you work in Dallas.
I live in Garland, and as long as your not planning on living around the downtown area(75040), its a pretty good city. And as far as schools are concerned, all Garland schools are good, but just like any other school, in any other city, they have their problems. There are some new houses being built around Lake Ray Hubbard. I have a friend that lives there and its beautiful, and safe. I'm considering having my wedding there by the lake. |

yuppie types live in the northern suburbs like Plano, Frisco, etc...great schools.
Grapevine, Coppell northeast of the city are also good, with good schools. Fort Worth has some very nice areas as well.
Most other suburbs of Dallas to the east, west and north are very redneck...and have questionable schools and high crime...stay away from Garland, Mesquite, Irving, etc...
If you can afford private schools, North Dallas inside the 635 loop, or Addison is also very nice and much closer to downtown and entertainment.
Of course the very wealthy live in Highland Park or Preston Hollow areas...they are very nice very close to the city, etc... |
