It's nothing special at all. People there, and I'm not being mean when I say this, they're very slow. I have yet to meet a smart person from there. Everyone I've ever talked to about this, feels the same way.

To me one of the best cities in WV has to be Morgantown. It's a city on the verge of becoming the largest in the state (population hovering close to 30,000) and has the most potential out of any city in the state in terms of placement. The I-79 area of Clarksburg, Fairmont, and Morgantown is seeing more growth substantially than the I-64 corridor has seen even tho its at a slower pace compared to I-64 but the projects planned along I-79 are large and from multinational corporations like Charles Point in Clarksburg, the connector road project in Fairmont and the proposed I-268 project in Morgantown. Morgantown continues to grow and prosper and always ranks high in National public magazines and papers. Recently being named one of the smartest cities, one of Fortune Magazines top small cities to live, and many other numerous awards that no other city in WV has won. Morgantown has a high quality of life with one of the two best hospitals in the region with close access to Pittsburgh to the north (45 mins), Hagerstown, MD (1:30 or so east) and Washington, DC is a drivable 3 hours from Morgantown. Yes our downfalls is roads but when you live in a state that doesn't support the area then you have problems. Morgantown is one of the only cities to see such growth that not even Martinsburg can claim that fame with most of its growth coming from population not population and job growth. Having the flagship university of the state located in Morgantown your greeted with all the wonders of having a college in town. The academic possibilities, the sports, the culture, and the ability to know that your healthcare provider or other bussiness person you engage with went to school right there in the community is a great asset. Morgantown retains a great deal of its graduates adding to its growing possibilities along with it having the lowest age group living within a city in the entire state hovering at a median age of 32. Morgantown is also home to some of the states best and busiest night clubs and high end bars and restaurants. The Wharf District is still a work in process you can see from downtown with the Marina Building slated to finish work this summer as one of the many breathtaking buildings in the state along with a growing up skyline as more buildings are in the works along with the redeveloped idea of a 19-22 story building to be built in Morgantown's business district. The city boasts some of the best educational facilities in the state hosting Suncrest Middle which is a National Blue Ribbon school and the construction of new schools throughout Morgantown will be home soon to the most modern and up to date schools in the state. Alot of the schools work closely with WVU so you'll see alot of help from local students in helping teach, coach, and work happening with these students not only from them but professionals many who gotten their education right here in Morgantown. Its a city of possibilities as you can see shopping is the newest attraction to the city. Clarksburg was once home to the region's shopping attractions until completion of the University Town Centre which hosts Target, TJ Maxx, a Hollywood Theaters, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and the state's only Barnes & Noble with Cheesecake Factory and Starbucks. The Morgantown Mall also continues to flourish as 2 stores in the mall have moved so their stores can be expanded into larger stores to better serve its customers. Also on the way is the Suncrest Town Centre which will be built along Rte 705 close to Ruby Memorial Hospital and Mon General Hospital which at the moment will have a Khol's and Home Depot. Home building and improving is a popular past time in Morgantown as the city is already home to 2 Lowe's on either end of the city. Morgantown is a wealth of opportunity still wrapped up in small town charm as it continues to mature and prosper and still hold the title as West Virginia's Fastest Growing City.

It's a beautiful, mountainous state that defies most of the assumptions that people make about it. Contrary to most jokes and generalizations, the people are not inbred hillbillies. There are definitely rednecks, but you'll find them in every state.

I live in the Mid-Ohio Valley, and West Virginia is like 30 minutes away and I go there weekly. I can't see the different between them and other people, but people from mid-western states in general are down to earth and sometimes country-ish.

Ohioans always make fun of West Virginians being incest, but we're just joking. West Virginia is nice.

Beautiful all summer and most beautiful in the fall I lived there a couple of years back and now i miss it

For all the jokes it gets and stereo-types that come to mind, West Virginia is very clean and beautiful. Also estremley affordable, I would love to retire there one day or have a house there, it is probably really beautiful in the fall with all the leaves changing.
Also Pittsburgh is only about an hour or two away so you can have city life when you want it.
The people I met were very nice and down to earth also large college community.

It's actually a very beautiful, mountainous state with scenic rivers and a lot of history. West Virginians have a reputation for being a bunch of dumb inbreds, but that's because Appalachia is a very impoverished region due to the closing of the coal mines and high rate of unemployment. As with any stereotype, it's an overgeneralization and an outdated one at that. Check out the movie October Sky.

Beautiful country, I've been there Many many times, but as a younger girl, but I remember how pretty it was, lot's of back hills people, then anyway, I remember visiting my sets of Great Grand parents, they both
still had an outhouse and they lived way way back in the woods, long long road to each one's home, you don't forget that comfortable homey feeling, I'd sit in the yard on the tire swing or porch and listen to the secada's/I still call them locusts, that buzzing sound, there's tons up there, as I remember it, I just recently noticed that we have quite a few of them little buggers around here too. Ain't never seen them, just hear them. My family still visits up there, they love it, if it's any idea what the people are like over there by my family there, you'll love it, very nice people. Just had to add a little memory history there. If you go, enjoy your time there, take pictures, it's beautiful, visit old places, there's lots still there, there was lot's of moonshining up there, story is my Gpa was one, hid it in a wood seat he built in their living room with a lift up lid and compartment underneath, I never saw no stills, just know that we weren't allowed to go far back into the woods behind the houses, wouldn't think they still do that these days.

Roger Bander
very mountainy, 97% white and mostly poor, lots of trees and coal mines

Fishin' In the Dark
Its like Virginia. Only a bit more west.

Don't listen to all the stupid people who answer these questions saying people are inbred, dumb, slow, hillbilly's, or rednecks- but if a southern accent and a love for the outdoors classifies me as a hillbilly then that's fine with me. I was born in WV and have lived here all of my life. This is the most beautiful state I have ever seen, and I've been to many states. I disagree that Morgantown is the best place in WV.. Yea, it's nice, but Northern WV has nothing on the beauty of southern WV (where I grew up).

The pace of life is very laid back and relaxing. The people you meet here are very kind and friendly. People say they never meet a stranger when they come visit. Most West Virginians treat everyone like neighbors.

The outdoors is what the state has to offer. If you hate being outside, you won't like it here. If you come here, get out and check out some trails. Every trail you find is perfect for a long walk. Visit the historical places, experience white water rafting, go horseback riding along the New River Gorge. Come in the fall when the leaves are an mosaic of beautiful colors.

This state truly is "Almost Heaven" and I'm very glad I had to opportunity to grow up here. Come check it out and don't judge until you've experienced life here. =)
