N.K.

What's living in New York City like?

I'm moving to New York City in a couple of months. I've been living in the South most of my life (Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee) and would like to know a little bit of how New York will be like. No stereotypes please, just facts and opinions (pros, cons, etc.) Thanks!

Weird, it is the most interesting city in America, however, since it is so huge and complicated, most people find that they hardly ever leave the block that they live on and as a result, never really get to go out and explore. May I suggest that you move to the areas of Chelsea or east Brooklyn, they have come on as cultural hubs lately (lots of cool art stuff and great caffes) while being much less expensive to live in than Manhattan. The crime really is no longer a problem given that the whole area has undergone such a renaissance as of late, and since the two are so diverse, they aren't as isolating. Good luck.

Expensive, amazing, a total culture shock since it is a melting pot of many races; much safer then it was, but still number 1 on terrorist hit lists; join some local groups like arts, entertainment; if you're open minded you'll love it, if not, you're in for a miserable experience.

First of all, congrats on the move! I think your life in NYC will be amazing! There will be busy and fast moving people. And if your into performing, you'll be in the right place for that.

Good Luck on the move!

I believe that living in NYC is awesome. It depends on your personality, though. New York is a very crowded area, and there are always people around. Everything is happening very fast and sometimes you dont have time to think. You might feel a little different because the South is quieter. But I love the city & its really fun! Have fun & good luck!

living in New York has it's ups and downs. It is very bright and beautiful. Manhattan is one of the most popular places to go! it's bright and so many places to see! It does have a few flaws. It's REALLY cold in then winter and REALLY REALLY hot in the summer. but you will surely enjoy your self. there are many clubs and places to have fun! hope i've helped! good luck with the move! =] ♥

I love living in NYC. When I was younger I lived in a small town in Michigan. I hated it! When I turned 18 I moved here stayed for a year then went to college. I came back and I am loving it. It is fast paced and wonderful. I love the lights and everything. But its not as fabulous as it is in movies. Sure some parts are, but not where I live. There are so many places you can go that you couldn't any where else. So many things to see. Every day you will see something new. Hope you love NYC as much as I do!

Do you have children or are you moving as a single person? Single: FANTASTIC. Children: EXPENSIVE. I've lived there as both... I've just moved from NYC to VA, but I miss the city very much.

Highlights:

Daffy's (great clothing store with designer labels and very low prices)

Museum of Natural history (free - when you get to the ticket counter to pay the suggestion donation of $18 or whatever it is, you are very welcome to say that you can afford to donate $1 or any amount (or none!).

Central Park: of course.

Grand Central Station: There is a free tour ... they show you the bank vault, the rooms where people have unclaimed property that was found on Subways and in the station... it's amazing!

Check out the NYC weekender for festivals and events going on throughout the city. Use Craigslist to find housing, if you don't already have it, to avoid paying a broker thousands of dollars.

E-mail me if you have further questions. You are in for a GREAT experience living in the city!!

It's fun, slightly overwhelming when you first move there, but there's always something new and fun to do. If you like cold weather, it's good for you, and if you like hot weather, it's good for you as well during the summer time.

A really good friend of mine has lived all over New York City. Its much more expensive as far as cost of living goes, depending on where you work in relation to where you live you probably wont need a car bc of availability of taxi's and subways. My friend has never had any altercations as far as crime goes, but i would still recommend being prepaired, but thats true no matter where you choose to live. Be prepaired to have a great time though & i wish you the best of luck in NYC! Its a blast.
