From Times Square I always walk to Central Park if the weather is nice. Statue of Liberty is much further, so I would suggest a taxi or the subway to that area.
Another great thing to do that is near Times Square is go to Rockefeller Center and go the The Top of The Rock.
The streets there are pretty straightforward, so finding your way around is really not a problem. |

walking, subway, & a taxi if you are desperate (i.e late at night or a very far distance). Just don't take a taxi during rush hour because it will take you longer than walking!

Walk or take the subway. Walking you get to see more of the city.
Take taxis when you need to get somewhere more quickly or it's too far away and you're willing to pay the extra cash. |

if you are going to be out all day and visiting a lot of different places in the same general area, then just walk from one place to the next.
otherwise, you might want to try these rules of thumb:
within a mile (20 numbered street or short blocks): walk
over a mile or the distance of 2+ subway stations: bus and/or subway, depending on time of day, bus/subway route, traffic, etc.
with an unlimited ride MetroCard you can decide to do whatever you want on the spur of the moment.
and sometimes, you can do one one way and something else on the way back. from Times Square you can walk to the United Nations and take the bus back, for example...
welcome to NYC and have a nice trip! |

Don't hire a car. The traffic congestion is too bad. From Times Square, you could walk it to the Empire State Building on 33rd Street (about half a mile) and Central Park on 59th (about a mile). The Rockefelle Centre is also within walking distance of Times Square. You're going to have to catch the Underground to Clinton Park to catch the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. if you want to go further a field, you may find it useful to get a travelpass for the underground.
Also remember the New York Underground is different from London: if you end up in the wrong platform in London, it's not a problem as you walk round. However, in New York, if you end up on the wrong platform, you have to walk back through the barrier to street level to use the correct station entrance. |

The subway is your best bet to get around manhattan. They are fairly reliable (though not necessarially the most glamorous) and quick. There are a lot of resources online to show you what lines to take to get where you want to go. If your hotel is near Times Square, then you can easily access many of the locations (Madison Square, Empire State, etc etc) by walking. To get to the south end, take the number 2 or 3 subway from penn station down to, say, wall street. Buy a metrocard from a machine found near the entrances of most of the subways. two dollars will get you unlimited access to all NY subways and busses for two hours. 7 dollars will buy you an all day pass.
As a benchmark, it will take you about 15 minutes to get from Penn Station to wall street at the southern tip of manhattan via subway. |

You`ve just got to go to Times Square. It`s brilliant. Leave the bus, leave the car and have a good walk around. This place is so alive...http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/?cam=streaming&cam_type=streaming

I would walk around. The city is not car-friendly but pedestrian friendly. Enjoy it. The location you are staying at has so much to do aound in a 5 mile radius. If you wanna visit all these places, take the subway..it is really easy to follow and people will help =) |

There are two three ways to travel around while in New York City. You can walk, take the subway or the bus. Walking is main mode of transport in New Yorker, also the best way to explore the city by foot. Make sure you have a good pair of sneakers with you, you'll need them a lot.
The bus and the subway are cheap. they both cost $2 a ride, but since you're all in town for 5 days, my advice to get a 7-days unlimited ride MetroCard for $24 a person ($25 a person after March 1). That card will give you unlimited rides on both the subway and bus.
I hope this information was very helpful. If you have any question or need travel directions while in town, just drop me a line by clicking on the Avatar and the e-mail icon on the profile.
Good luck and enjoy you trip

I'd say walk when you can & when you can't take a cab or the subway, whichever is cheaper. Word of caution: Stick together & hang on to your purses tightly. It's the BIG city where anything goes. You will be taking in the sites that I have longed to see for a long time. I may get to see them this year. Have fun & just use common sense at all times. |

Walk as much as you can. It's a great way to see the City. But take the subway when you want to go to other parts of NYC. |

Yeah, I went to New York in 2005. The subway worked best for me. I stayed at the Double Tree on Lexington in Manhattan and the subway made it easy for me to hit the places I wanted. I had tickets to Letterman, wanted to visit Greenwich Village and the Park, and see Ground Zero Even 4 years later and not from New York, that place will affect you, believe me. |

Take the subway! You can buy an all week pass for relatively cheap (I think it'll be about $20) and it runs everywhere! (except for the statue of liberty...you'll need to get on a boat for that). |

Bus ... get a bus pass for each day, that is the cheapest and the most flexible ...well, considering that you have never visited here before, I would say the best way is by taxi since the drivers can take you directly to your destination, and you will feel spoiled and pampered, but::::: can you afford it? Taxis are expensive...
Empire State is a bus ride from your hotel, Central Park: you will need to decide what to see there, it is a big park.... and Statue of Liberty: I would call Circle Line Cruises to find out where they leave from for the Liberty Cruise ... you can always ask the concierge at the hotel, too

Cab or Limo is not only the best but the cheapest way to move around the city. Check out the below websites for rates on each http://www.123world.com/new-york/new-york-car-rentals.php and http://www.nyctourist.com/newyorkcity/transportation.htm Good Luck!! |
