What's the nicest state in America?

I need somewhere where I can chill out and do nothing with cool people.
I'm thinking about doing a whole road-trip thing in a van or whatever. New York and Nevada are pretty much sure things, but I think they're like a million miles apart so I might as well visit some places in between.
Any suggestions? Please bare in mind I'm the kind of person prepared to drive 500 miles on the spur of the moment. =)

Go through Alabama like they did in the "Top Gear Goes to America" special. lol

Nice as in cool? Or nice as in friendly? Either way, you'd definitely like Key West, Florida, but that would take you way off course. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is a gay resort area that's supposed to be pretty nifty, and that would be more in line with your route. I don't know if this would fit into your definition of doing nothing, but West Virginia (depending on the time of year) offers white water rafting, skiing/snowboarding, paragliding, mountain biking, rock climbing, and the people are pretty friendly, too. You might also want to look into the Asheville, North Carolina, area. I'd be happy to give you any other pointers if you'd like.

(Oh, and I don't know if you know this, but you have to be at least 25 years old to rent a car in America.)

EDIT: The organization I got my work permit through (BUNAC) also offers programs from the UK to the US.
http://www.bunac.org/uk/
This would allow you to spend up to four months working/traveling in the US. (However, this program requires that you have already started university, so it wouldn't work if you were planning your trip for your gap year.)

West Virginia. People there, even strangers, treat you like family.

I'm talking about native born West Virginians. Not immigrants from New York or California or other rich folks from other places.

Austin, Texas is a blast! 6th street is chock full of fun night clubs and it is a college town. Sante Fe, New Mexico is beautiful...it is hard to give any state the "best" rating because every state has something to offer. But for cool people, Austin, TX hands down. Laid back, easy going, fun loving folks and lots of great music.

People are very Nice in Arkansas. A-holes in Colorado. North Florida people are friendly. Oklahoma is kind of a mixed bag.

The friedliest people in the US are generally in the mid-west. Not that you can't find nice people anywhere, it's just that in the mid-west you will find lots of them. So, try sitting at a bar in Indiana or Illinois and strike up a conversation with a stranger.
