Nice downtown, lot's of fun things to do in the area, nice suburbs, but also a lot of extremely dangerous areas and a lot of areas look depressing and abandoned. The city government is corrupt which is why the bad areas of the city have yet to improve. It's those bad areas that give Detroit a bad reputation. There's cities as a whole that are far worse than Detroit ... Buffalo, NY and Gary, IN are not only dangerous (but not as dangerous as some areas in Detroit) and economically suffering, but even their suburbs are dirty and dangerous.
You’ll get people who say Detroit is a horrible place, and you’ll get people who say Detroit is amazing. In my opinion, it’s a mix of both. It depends on what area of Detroit you're referring to. |

From one who knows firsthand (I live in Windsor), it's a diamond in the rough! Not that it doesn't have its share of problems - it does - but Detroit does not deserve the bad rap it is getting in the media and from outsiders who know nothing about the city.
More than half of the previous posters sound like they have never been to Detroit. I guess if you're asking about "image" they have as much right to post as anyone. An image can be the perception of a stranger, I guess, but this only perpetuates further the negativity about Detroit.
Like any major city, I have found that if I avoid the "bad areas" of the city (and every city has them), I feel safe and secure venturing in Detroit. Greektown or Mexicantown for dinner, a ball game at Comerica, theatre at the Fox....this city has a lot of positives that are just not recognized by the media.
The Kwame fiasco and the corruption of the local and state government certainly do not help the city's image, but again even there the media does its best to paint the picture with one stroke.
I hope and believe that Detroit will eventually turn itself around. It's not going to come today or tomorrow. What takes years to destroy will take years to rebuild but the potential is there and needs to be fully tapped. |

If you want fun, head to Downtown Detroit. It is beautiful and fun. There are tons of stuff to do. I think that Downtown Detroit is the best place for entertainment in the whole state of Michigan. Now the neighborhoods, that's another story. |

A beautiful Image rich with culture, nightlife, history and, good times with friends and family.
Not the damaging Image the media and the past two Mayors have thrown around about Detroit to give it a bad name. |

Its middle of the road. While Downtown Detroit has really improved, the neighborhoods don't seem to get any better, with a few exceptions. I love Detroit and wouldn't be anywhere else. But, this mayor's image has only made Detroit have a more worse image. Young was a real screw up and Archer should have stayed longer. Kwame is just in it for himself and needs to get out. if we can get good, honest, and dependable leadership then we can turn this city 180.
And four things:
1. Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit, is where all the Arab Muslims are and Sterling Heights, also a suburb is where all the Arab Christians (Chaldeans) are. NOT Detroit
2. 50 years ago, up to 1967, was Detroit's golden age, after that, because of the riots, the city went downhill
3. Gary, IN is the armpit of America, at least Detroit doesn't smell.
4. Detroit doesn't have the organized crime gangs like LA or NYC.
Adrienne, you never actually went to Detroit if you never got out of the car. You should really get out of that car if you want to experience this great city. |

I love Detroit, my image is of the best kept secret in America. The people with negative views of Detroit have never been. Everywhere has problems but for some reason Detroit's gets overblown in the media. |

Detroit, in my opinion, is truly a great city. There may be good times (i.e. festivals, team championships, concerts, sports games, etc.) and the bad times (i.e. mayoral scandal, riots of 1967, troubled economy.) But it doesn't matter the way you look at it, whether good or bad, I have been born in that city, and raised in other suburbs. As a native Detroiter, I think once everyone knows about Detroit, you'll probably never know what may or might happen. |

Failure of leadership aside...
Detroit is just like other major US cities. It has it's fair share of areas you wouldn't want to be caught in after dark...but it also has some historical gems, a nice downtown area and some nice neighborhoods.
I grew up in a suburb of Detroit, and was always fed terrible images of the city. Then I chose to go to a small university in the city (UDM), and my perception has changed considerably. |

home. i love Detroit. I feel safe enough because since Ive grown up here, I know what areas not to wander off in and which ones are fine. indeed there are bad areas but that should not be the basis for judgment on the entire city itself. It's not a tourist town by any means, however, it's a very unique city with outstanding culture, with several great musicians and sports figures coming from here and playing here. That is why I love Detroit and am proud that I grew up here. |

Tough city with a rough image, but very misunderstood. It is what people think and also more good than people may know. |

I think Detroit has many nice suburbs, and great malls. Although the city itself... I hear its dangerous and there are many streets ( a unusual amount of streets) you can not walk/ drive down without being harassed. I also hear it puts a sore on the state. Although reguardless I think Michigan is the best state, and wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Hopefully detroit can improve itself... |

The place was a mess 50 years ago and no progress has been made to improve the situation. Here is where the Reverend Al Sharpton and Reverend Jesse Jackson should be expending their efforts instead of harrassing us white folks. |

Lots of poor black people. Lots of ghetto, gangs, pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers, thieves, and run-down neighborhoods with abandoned buildings and graffiti. Lots of murders, rapes, and thefts. Also, lots of Middle Eastern people. I know that Detroit actually has the highest Arab-American population of any major city in America. |
