What State is Washington D.C most located in?

I understand that it is essentially its own "State" but if you had to say which state it's most part of which state would it be?

It is not part of any state.

The land forming the original District came from the state of Maryland and Commonwealth of Virginia.

However, the area south of the Potomac River (39 square miles or about 100 km²) was returned, or "retroceded," to Virginia in 1847 and now is incorporated into Arlington County and the City of Alexandria.

Since 1847, the remaining land that forms the area now known as the District of Columbia is exclusively "sitting" on land that belongs to Maryland (defunct land in the state of Maryland since 1790).

It is not in a state. It is not any more in a state than Vermont is "in" Massachusetts. To say what state it's most part of is nonsense. It is the District of Columbia. It borders Maryland and Virginia but is in no way part of them. Residents of DC do not pay any taxes to MD or VA (they pay taxes to DC). They do not get services from MD or VA (they get services from them). DC has it's own road and legal infrastructure. If you are charged with a crime, you go to a DC court.

So it is not a state, it is not in a state in any meaningful way.

None. The District of Columbia shares boundaries, not acreage, with its neighboring states.

MD or VA since they're both neighbors and have public transportation running in-between.

You couldn't say it's in a state. It's its own district (not a state). However, in spirit they're closest to Virginia or Maryland.

This is a good question. I have lived in Maryland for
the past 16 years and never thought about it. I think the answers you have so far are pretty good. Depending on
traffic and if you drive or take the train I live about thirty minutes from Washington D.C. I know that doesn't help you but I guess my point is...I don't know the facts and I am not looking at a map right now but I think Maryland is the state that Washington D.C. is most located in.

D.C borders VA. & MD.

It was purposely placed on the border between states. The land that currently makes up DC used to be in Maryland. Part of DC was made up of land that was "donated" by Virginia, but that land was given back to Virginia in the 19th century.

And DC isn't it's own "state" as it does not have many of the rights of states.

Washington DC is essentially it's own district and not a state, hence the "District of Columbia." It's also not a part of any state. If you live in DC, your home address doesn't involve ", MD" or ", VA"

The only thing I would say is that being in DC as tourist, is that there seem to be more Maryland liscense plates around on the vehicles then there are Virginia liscense plates. Then again those people driving those vehicles don't live in the district, if they did they would have Washington DC plates.

The university of Maryland is also located inside of the capitol beltway. I remember seeing a lot of college students taking the DC metro subway back into Maryland like my brother and myself (they rode on a different line), after seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers play at the Verizon Center last January.

You can also pick up some Baltimore radio stations clearly as far down as Virginia. You can catch Baltimore Orioles games in DC, and DC I would imagine DC gets a lot of tourism from folks in the Baltimore area, especially when the Orioles play the Nationals.

(Note: The Redskins play in Landover, MD and not technically IN DC. So I don't think there are too many Ravens fans actually wondering into the district when they have tickets to see their team play "at Washington").

So I would say that DC isn't a part of any state, but it seems to have a pretty strong influence from Maryland. I hope this gives you a good detailed answer of what I believe you intend to mean which is what state has more influence on DC (as far the District itself goes and not the politics of the White House strongely influenced by the Pentagon in VA).

I understand what you are asking...

Essentially DC is surrounded on 3 sides by MD. The traditional MD/VA boarder is the Potomac River. If that remained true through DC, then DC would be completely in MD. When you look at a map, it looks like DC is a city in MD.

DC is an odd shape, but used to be almost a perfect square (well, diamond). However, the piece that jutted into VA was annexed to VA and became Arlington.

Therefore, DC is 100% carved out what should be Maryland.

The original grant of land was shared equally by Maryland and Virginia. Virginia backed out, however, when the grant was finalized, so Maryland gifted all of the land. Much of the land grant consisted of a swamp with was "reclaimed" by programs designed by George Washington and John Lafitte and is now known as Foggy Bottom. The Potomac River forms a long boundary between D.C. and Virginia, but the River itself still belongs to Maryland.

you're going to get slammed by people and i'll get thumbs down but i'm know what you're trying to say and i used to wonder that myself. you know that DC is its own place but I think it appears to be more in MD.

I guess Maryland would be it.
