Pros
1. Portland is close to much natural beauty, including lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and even Mt. Hood (where you can ski/snowboard!). To me, this is the most important pro.
2. It is a budding art community with many fantastic local artists.
3. Restaurants. Oh, the restaurants!
4. The architecture (if you're into that) is just awesome.
5. People, for the most part, are very friendly. It's part of being an Oregonian.
Cons
1. Traffic.
2. There are some hippies, but they are more of the cleanish-smoke-weed-love-everyone type.
3. Rain (I personally like rain, but hey, to each his own.)
4. It's easy to get lost if you are unfamiliar with the area.
5. I can't think of anything else.

Here are 2 of the biggest cons......lots of rain and hippies. Have you ever smelled a wet hippy? Yuck |

Pros:
1. Great public transit. The downtown is very bike/pedestrian friendly
2. Summer is actually quite warm and dry.
3. Lots of outdoor/nature and cultural options.
4. Great brew-pubs, great beer, great wine.
5. Very liberal
Cons:
1. With ample public transit comes narrow highways. Traffic can get heavy for a place its size
2. For as dry as the summer is, the winter is equally wet.
3. No sales tax = larger chunk take out of your paycheck.
4. The Blazers are the only major professional sports option. Portland could use an MLB team.
5. Some people say Portlander's can come off as eliteist. |

Well, there's nothing really great about it, sorry I don't know and I've lived here almost 10 years lol. |

Portland is a great place to live. You have the mountains, rivers lakes all real close. It does rain alot. The traffic can be nasty, but if you live in the suburbs of Portland it is great. I myself live in Vancouver WA, which is about 10 minutes from downtown Portland. I have lived here all my life. I love WA, and Ore because it is very clean and there are lots of things to do. Houses are cheaper in WA, and the schools are better here. But if you live in Oregon you don't have to pay sales tax. But their property taxes are alot higher. The weather can change in an instant. One day it might be 70 and the next day drop to 50. The Gorge and the beaches are my favorite places cause they are so beautiful and so clean. Good Luck to you. You should look up Portland on the web and get some good info. |

PROS:
1.The diversity of people. (contrary to popular belief, portland is not full of 'hippies') Yes, many liberal pot smokers who like nature, but they dont look any different than you or me ie no dreads, n smelly n dirty.
2.The nature here. No city is as beautiful, period. And I will argue til death with anyone who disagrees. From the amazing urban reserve forests, to the fountains downtown, and the parks every couple blocks, it is truley breath-taking if you can appreciate it's beauty.
3.Location. Mere hours in each direction and you have entirely new scenery. The coast and surfing is an hour and a half away, the mountains and incredible skiing is an hour away, and there are forests for camping nearly in every direction.
4.Not over-populated. People will disagree with me, but for a larger city, Portland is not nearly as overpopulated as say, Seattle, or San Fran. We don't have anywhere near the traffic and pollution larger cities have, but still have the economy of a large city.
5.Min wage is in conjunction with cost of living. Prices here ARE NOT through the roof like other places, our economy is stable, and job market steadily growing.
CONS:
1. There are none. BUT if you are racist, will complain about the rain, hate coffee, and local music, don't like the outdoors, refuse to take public transit, don't apprecaite good beer and food, then Portland is not the place for you. |
