What are some fun, free things to do in New York City?

And, when I say fun and free, I mean, fun and free.

My friend, may I recommend a few.

-Ride the Staten Island Ferry and catch glimpse of the Statue of Liberty as the ferry crosses the harbor.

-Take a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge

-Catch the "Today" show at Rockefeller Center

-Visit the Main Branch of the New York Public Library

-Take a nice walk through Central Park.

I hope this information is very helpful.

Good luck

i'm not from ny but off the top all i can think of is visiting the famous central park and visiting the rockerfeller plaza(of course skating isn't free i'm sure) or visiting the 9/11 site.

for inexpensive fun hop on a train and get off and explore the burroughs(chinatown for some good knockoffs, harlem and see the famous apollo theatre or bill clintons hangout, etc).

or the big thing thats coming up- new years ( but i hear you gotta get there mad mad mad mad early like 5-6 pm b/c they shut you in and you can't get out until after the ball drops).

hope this was helpful and enjoy.

Oh I LOVE New York City. Let me see if I can give you some suggestions:
I would say go for a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge :)
Explore Central Park. It's quite large (1/2 mile wide and 2 1/2 miles long) and there are many things within the park to do and see.
Window shop in Times Square
Go inside Grand Central Station
Check out Greenwich Village and Soho

There's just so many areas to walk around and explore and gawk at all the activity and buildings around you. I hope you have fun

Free Annual Events & Everyday Activities
...did I mention they are all free?
Parades:

1. The Art Parade- Held annually in September. Started in September 2005, this small, funky parade travels along West Broadway, and is sure to entertain. There are all types of floats, sculptures, kites, and performances, so be sure to bring your camera!

2. Chinese New Year Parade- Held annually every February in Chinatown. This street festival and parade features elaborate costumes, lion dances, floats, and cultural events.

3. Macy's Thanksgiving Parade

Summers Only:

Catch a free classic movie in Bryant Park every Monday night, and arrive early to mark your spot!

Central Park- Explore everywhere from Sheep's Meadow to the Reservoir, and enjoy the free music at Summerstage.

Holiday Season:

Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, window shopping along 5th Avenue, and watch the ice skaters in Central Park at Wollman Rink, Bryant Park, or Rockefeller Center.

All year-round:

Staten Island Ferry- Always free and a great view of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

MoMA- Although normally $20 for adult admissions, on Friday afternoons from 4-8pm, MoMA is free for everyone!

Walk around- Exploring the city is usually visitors' favorite thing to do. Walk through Chinatown, SoHo, East Village, Financial District, Chelsea, and more- you'll feel like you're in different cities!

I'm confused...

The park, and window- shopping, after all, there is no law saying you have to buy stuff! Take long walks around your block as well, exercise is the key to a happy and healthy lifestyle.
