I hear Duloc is the perfect place.
All kidding aside, you need to stop watching all those movies. Sure, there are places in LA that are "ghetto". But one person's ghetto is another's "neighborhood diversity". The reality is that no place is immune from gangs. The person who said that the OC has no gangs is incorrect. There are gangs in some sections of Santa Ana. In fact, there are even gangs in some VERY nice areas of Fullerton.
In any case, you can start with the neighborhoods mentioned above, and go from there. Remember, you are going to pay for your safety. The less crime, the more expensive the real estate is, either in higher mortgages or higher rent.
The best advice I can offer you is to get a job first. THEN find a permanent place to live. This is important because the traffic in SoCal is brutal. The less you have to deal with it, the better. Until then, just do like everyone else and live in the Oakwood apartments. |

Orange County (The O.C.) is beautiful and safe, especially South Orange County! Northern California is incredibly beautiful, but far away from L.A. I am a native Californian and I love my beautiful state! Good luck on your move to sunny, gorgeous California! |

You had better realize on thing, you are going to pay dearly for not living in the ghetto.
Some of the areas with the lowest crime rates are Thousand Oaks and simi Valley area. But you will pay dearly for that safety both in money and in commute time.
Take our advise, live as closely as possible to your job, in order to keep from taking years off your life. |

Check out Eagle Rock, Los Feliz Village, Silverlake, West Hollywood, Alhambra, South Pasadena, Hancock Park, and the Miracle Mile area. Those are all pretty nice places to live. Some may be on the expensive side, but I'm just throwing them out there. |

Santa Monica, Redondo Beach, Beverly Hills. Parts of West Hollywood, Most of Orange County like Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach. Parts of Riverside County like Corona, Temecula.
There are lots of neighborhoods that have escaped the gang influence and the urban blight everywhere in the LA area. You just have to look for them. |

North Orange County or South LA County isn't bad. Schools are good and crime is fairly low. When I was growing up, I was never scared to walk down the street alone. |

I used to live in Burbank, on North Hollywood Blvd by the WB studios. There is alot of for rents there and its pretty nice. |

The city of San Marino. It's adjacent to Pasadena.
If you're okay with an acceptable level of crime and gangs, consider South Pasadena, Pasadena, Alhambra, Rosemead, Temple City, Glendale. |
