I live in Joliet and have my entire life. The crime rate is much lower than everyone thinks. The closer you go to plainfield the more expensive housing gets on average. Plainfield schools are pretty crowded but are getting much better since they seem to building a few each year. Some Joliet schools are great. My children are in the Joliet public school system and they are doing wonderful. There are not a lot of gangs and the city keeps growing. I would never move from here. Just about everything you need is right in town. You can find every type of house/condo/townhome you would ever like. But most important it is much less expensive than just about every other suburb. You can find quite a few nice areas where single family homes are about 200-250k.

My MIL lives in Bolingbrook. Holy moses, is it expensive in that state. Seriously, you cannot find ANYTHING cheap, lucky to get a 2/2 for less than $150k. Seriously, though, browse the www.realtor.com website and get a good handle on what to expect in each market.

I was born in joliet. lived in a neighborhood called lily cache off of route 30 in Plainfield. It not the best but its OK.

NW suburbs are nicer, and you can go as far north as Wisconsin. I live in Wauconda, IL and we got a great deal on our home, and love the area. Joliet has a max security prison and is an older town, with some bad areas. Plainfield is OK, but honestly you get what you pay for, and the NW suburbs are nicer overall.

The area is experiencing rapid growth. the schools and streets have not been able to keep up with th growth so there is overcrowding in the schools and the traffic is terrible. Joliet is notorious for gangs and crime, but the high cost of land in surrounding counties has driven up the demand for land in Will county. The housing is still more affordable than in other counties, but you will be faced with the problems of unchecked growth. Many newer homes in that area seem to be just slapped together without much thought to quality. I would try and find something in an older, more established western burb.

My grandparents live in joliet, and I visit there alot. The houses there are nice, and has a good school district. Also, nothing really bad happens there! A good realiter to get is coldwell, it is very popular in that area! Trust me, you'll get your money's worth!!!

Its citizens are among the best educated in North America, with the average adult having a Masters degree. There are no local property taxes in Joliet. The city is starting construction of a 100,000 seat domed stadium (with retractable roof) to welcome the Chicago Bears, who have announced their upcoming move to Joliet, where they will become the Joliet Bears. The city is planning to bulldoze all of its schools, and will replace all of them with new "atrium schools", each complete with indoor water parks and climate domes with waterfralls for wildlife study.
