For the state of Michigan to improve it all starts with Detroit and the surrounding suburbs (as far out as you want to go.) If this area can get mass transportation, increase the educational system and increase the standard of living, it can rebound.
For a new up and coming area to blossom and really get put on the map, I would say Grand Rapids or Traverse City.
The best thing about some Michigan cities is how small they keep themselves to maintain the small town feel and the UP has a lot of that as well as the upper part of the LP. |

I agree, as Michigan's first city, SSM is a very unique place.
SSM made a choice to remain a smaller city back when they closed the Air Force Base in Kincheloe (1977). Several companies tried to purchase the area and were rebuffed. |

Ann Arbor because it's already sort of a major city in Michigan, whereas Sault St. Marie is so beautiful that I would hate to see it deminsh because of urbanization. |

Grand Rapids :) |

I would like to see Sault ST. Marie grow because the UP is such a beautiful area. On the other hand though, that would probably increase living cost up in that area of the UP which is currently very affordable. |

@ Jenn, I would like to see Detroit become anything but another Las Vegas, do you want another overrated hookerville here?
Now with the question, I would like to see Detroit become to it's full potential first, but it would be cool for a major city to develop in the UP. That wiould actually draw more people up there to see how beautiful Michigan really is. |

i would hate to see yet another city get all built up -- just let detroit and a2 grow to their full potential and we'll be fine! |

I'd like to see Detroit officially undergo a massive renaissance and emerge as a major city once again. With all the bad news about the economy, the auto industry's bailout crisis, Kwame Kilpatrick getting locked up for phone-boning his secretary and lying about it under oath, and now the 0-16 Detroit Lions, the city needs SOMETHING positive to kick-start a revival before things get really out of hand up there.
I'm tired of only being able to brag about Faygo pop and the Red Wings all the time. LOL |

Detroit would be better as a major metropolitan city than the worn out shambles it is now. |

I wouldn't want anything in the UP ruined. They just need to make Detroit like a Vegas or Atlantic City. |

You are nuts. Michigan will be lucky to have anyone in a few years. |

I would like to see Ann Arbor become more like Chicago. I want it to be one of the nations largest cities. It's where I am from and has a lot of potential for growth. There is already so much going on, it would be a wonderful city to expand on. especially with the coming of Google..
Michigan's largest city is Grand Rapids, however when I think of big cities, that one does not come to mind. |
