San Francisco has more of an "Old City" urban feel to it. It has more character, sophistication and charm than Los Angeles. It boasts one of the most beautiful natural settings in the country (maybe the world) and is a relatively compact, pedestrian friendly city with an excellent mass transit system. It also has more rain and cooler temperatures than L.A. Los Angeles on the other hand is a sprawling city with a warmer climate more palm trees and (unfortunately) more smog. So it depends what you're looking for. Personally I prefer San Francisco but I like L.A. too. |

It really depends on what your looking for.
For the stereotypical California lifestyle choose Los Angeles.
For something other than that choose San Francisco.
I have lived in Northern California for close to 50 years and just go to LA to remind myself why I like it up here so much more. |

Los Angeles has beautiful parts, but unless you earn a nice income, or are someone like Angelina Jolie, dont expect to be living in anything safe. Los Angeles is on the high end of most dangerous cities in the United States. |

They are both "nice" cities, but San Francisco has more to do in terms of attractions. While Los Angeles is better for partying and raising a family. They're both really cool though.
Humble Advisor, don't call it "san fran" nobody likes it. |

that would entirely depend on what you definate "nicer" as being.
If you like the beach, warm temps, ultra cool hip place with young folks, then LA is your best bet.
If you are more intellectual, outdoorsy, laid back and not caught up on image, then San Francisco is the place.
I grew up in the SF area and much prefer the laid back attitude of the san francisco area. LA completely stresses me out. too many people, too many cars, way too warm of weather and very superficial.
P.S. to the guy who called it San Fran, us locals call it "The City". San Fran labels you as non-local. |

I have to say San Francisco nicer, better weather, less smog, the people are friendler, so San Francisco, if only I can say that about their job market |

What I want to know is how can people afford to live in San Francisco? |

San Francisco.
1. It's prettier. (less smog, better scenery...)
2. It's got a much better vibe. (less stressful, more chill.)
3. It has a lot to offer. (national parks, good neighborhoods, diversity, college areas, etc...)
4. Good weather. (Not too hot, not too cold.... a little foggy.)
5. Less judgemental. (Less botox/plastic surgery pressures in general) |

I live in the Bay area, and I love LA a ton more. Despite the crap traffic there, the people are nicer and it's alot more affordable and the weather is better. |

San Francisco obviously! |

Depends what you define as "nicer."I'll assume you mean nice neighborhoods, cleaner air, cosmopolitan feel then hands down its San Fran. LA'ers will contest that they have more culture and attractions than San Fran. |
