As a Portland native, I would recommend the Portland area
including the suburbs. All of the Willamette Valley was thickly
forested at one time. And there are stands of tall Evergreen
firs everywhere you look. Camping areas are available outside of the area, heading toward Mt Hood. Or further
south heading through the Santiam Pass, toward Detroit Dam. As far away as the Bend/Sisters area, for piney woods
and lakes. And many hiking areas even within the city limits.
Tall firs are thick toward the Oregon coast, but I don't know
about any camping areas, since it's an area still known for
the logging industry. Triple AAA has pamphlets and maps
available through their branches on traveling through the
state. And you can google to find camp grounds within the
state.
You can also check out the Washington side for camping.
As the same forested areas are on both sides of the Colum-
bia River, all the way to the mouth of the Columbia at the
Pacific Ocean.
I would like to recommend a good hiking destination and
maybe one for camping as well. Google for Bagby Hot
Springs, in the vacinity of Detroit Dam. They have a natural
hot springs and bath house, worth the visit. You can bathe
in mineral springs that you temper down with cold water to
make for a leisurely and refreshing bath or soak in a hollowed
out tree trunk. There are hiking trails all over there, and a
forest ranger in a cabin on the grounds, to show the places.
That would be my place to camp, as it is wonderful there in
the summer. You can't get in during winter, due to the snow.
Welches does have camping areas as was suggested.
And it has a resort area, pool and general store for snacks
and supplies. It is closer to Portland, and not as remote as
Detroit Dam/Bagby Hot Springs. The camping areas are
not primitive, and are off of a paved road that winds within
the area. The charge would most likely be much more than
in the Detroit area, since there are conveniences near by. |

Portland, hands down. 10 min in any direction you hit forest areas for hiking/camping. Forest Park is the largest urban national forest, covering thousands of acres of beautiful landscapes. We have trails and places to camp all over, so id definitly choose portland! |

Anywhere you live you are within easy access to woodsy areas in Oregon. Even if you choose downtown Portland, there are hiking trails in the woods within city limits, or you can drive 30 minutes outside of town to get to 100's of other hiking areas. If you want to live in the woods, try Welches which is 30 minutes outside of Portland, at the base of Mt. Hood. You can live to the west of Portland in places like Banks or Vernonia and be in easy distance of the Coast Range. You can't really lose anywhere you live in Oregon for what you want. Do you have any other criteria? Jobs? Cost of living? Feel free to email me if you have more questions or have a narrower idea of what you are looking for. |

I don't really know for sure, but I have a friend who lives near Portland, and she says any place is good for camping and out doors activities. Try doing a google search and I bet you'll get lots of ideas. Good luck...I'd love love love to live in Oregon. People say it rains...I'd love rain about right now.lol... |
