First of all, you know most people will say NY because it's in the NYC section.
NYC is the best for many reasons.
1. Transportation- NYC has double the population of LA but still has WAY less traffic. This is due to the subway system that connects people in four states (NY, NJ, Connecticut, and Pike County, PA). The buses are a lot better. Pollution is alot less. NYC doesn't have the bad LA pollution.
2. Crime- Crime is WAY less. NYC is not the safest city with over one million people in america.
3. Weather- LA has only one season, basically. NYC has all 4 seasons. Burning hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter and warm in the fall and spring. But, the only thing NYC lacks is great beaches. But there is also the Jersey shore and Long Island which is pretty close. We also don't have big earthquakes. we don't get big hurricanes either.
4. Economy- The economy of NYC is very great and stable.
5. More diversity- We have more immigrants, LEGAL immigrants in New York. We have a great white, black, hispanic and a decent asian population.
6. City- If you don't like the density of skyscrapers in Manhattan go across the river to Jersey City or Downtown Brooklyn, Newark, Paterson, White Plains, New rochelle, Mount Vernon, Long Island City, Stamford, Trenton, Bridgeport, New Haven.
7. Nightlife- Simply more things to do, clubs, bars and pubs at every corner. Resteraunts, you name it is in Manhattan. L.A. doesn't have as much things to do than New York. Did I say SHOPPING! Most people just go to the beach, and what I have experienced talk about celebrities and clothes all day. You can travel 2 hours to Atlantic City to gamble and six hours to Montreal, another 2 hours to Philadelphia and NYC is not far from the capital. |

As a native San Franciscan who is well acquainted with both LA and NYC, I think I can be reasonably objective. LA cops are even crazier than the NYPD. NYC has MUCH MUCH better public transit. LA may have a slight margin on highways. NYC has better restaurants and a greater diversity, although of course San Francisco has the best Chinese restaurants this side of the Pacific. Air pollution is considerably worse in LA. NYC's climate is marginally better than LA--does not get nearly as hot (and no brush fires to speak of), but it gets too cold in the winter.
It probably comes down to your tastes (you may like 100+ degree temperatures), but I lean to NYC. |

I have been to LA but not to New York, so on this basis, I would say NEW YORK! LA Sucks -It's not at all what you imagine. It's boring, anal and everyone is in bed by 9pm! |

New York City (if you can afford it) NYC is the most cosmopolitan city in the world and has everything that anyone could ever want, Restaurants, sight seeing, Opera house; Concert Halls etc . |

If you don't mind the winter weather, I would choose New York. Both are incredibly expensive places to live, but all things considered, New York has more to offer than Los Angeles.
(I live in the Los Angeles area). |

New York...it's a real city with old-world influences+new world cultures, it's the melting pot conglomerate of the U.S., it has 24 hour clubs, lounges, restaurants, etc, and every place you travel there has it's own flavor. ..but like anywhere else, it's best enjoyed by those with money. |

from a New Yorker, definitely New York. everybody says that LA is like New York, only with really bad pollution and you have to drive anywhere. I'm 25, have my license, don't need to drive and get everywhere either by train or bus. |

They are two completely different types of cities.
For a businessman, or entrepreneur, I'd say NYC.
For someone creative, vain, or looking to get into the film industry, LA. |

Los Angeles has polution, NYC has high rates for living.
They have pros and cons, you just have to find a reason to pick one over the other, whoever has the highest pros wins.
I'd choose LA personally because my friends and family are 2 hours away and I have a lot of opportunity to act in films versus theater, my second choice for acting jobs.
It's a personal decision. |

umm...that's tough. new york is a bit more crowded than LA but LA's air is kinda polluted. Eh...they have the callejones(the out door stores) and its less crowded there so...LA i guess |

It depends on what you like.
If you like traffic, smog, monotonous weather, difficulty finding a job, superficial people, earthquakes and having to speak Spanish at every store you go to, try LA.
If you like dirty, grimy, old, congested, overpriced cities where the people are outwardly hostile and very competitive, and long COLD winters and hot humid summers, and having to speak Spanish when you go to the store, try NY. |

Irvine, just south of Los Angeles, safest city in the world (of 2000) now its sixth
but Los Angeles is better sept for downtown, never go there, completely ghetto and teh air smells |
